What’s The Most Durable Tablet For Kids

September 15, 2017

If your children are anything like mine, it wouldn’t matter if the most durable tablet for kids was made with military grade materials and designed to withstand crashing to Earth from a low orbit.

Somehow, someway, they would still find a way to break it. Typically, this happens due to accidental drops, trips, spills, or one of the many other things that can occur in the day-to-day playtime of young children.

Why Warranty Beats Durability

Like I mentioned in the introduction above, let’s face it, no matter how tough the tablet is, destruction is only a cup of milk away. Both of my sons, for example, are very careful with all their electronic toys.

They take care to make certain that their electronics are kept clean, picked up and out of the floor, and they always know exactly where chargers and other accessories are.

Whether it’s the PlayStation, tablets, or Game Boys, they always know exactly where everything is and if they need to do anything to maintain their care.

Sadly, my daughter is certainly not the same. She often leaves toys laying on the floor (the fate of her original Nabi 2 was that I stepped on it at 2AM,) refuses to put them away, and often misplaces chargers and other accessories.

The point is however, that all three of them have had broken electronics in the past.

It seems like no matter how much care is taken when handling children’s electronics; one accident is all it takes for their favorite toy to be completely broken and unusable.

And let’s face it, none of us want to have to go without the favorite toy any longer than necessary.

Why Amazon Makes The Most Durable Tablet For Kids

Let me give you a quick look at why I believe the Kindle Fire Kids’ Edition is the most durable kids’ tablet..

It Has A 2 Year Worry Free Warranty – No other tablet manufacturer’s I’ve encountered do. While LeapFrog offered this for a limited time exclusively on their site, they stopped the promotion a couple of years ago. It Features A Durable Screen – I’ve dropped my regular Kindle Fire from the counter to the floor numerous times and it hasn’t broken yet. The kids’ edition is just a regular Fire with Freetime Unlimited and a 2 year total warranty. The Rubber Kids’ Case Helps – While it isn’t an Otterbox, the rubber bumper case is soft enough to bounce, but firm enough to be fairly tough.

Now, the good news is that Amazon has our backs when it comes to wanting to get the most bang for our buck with a tablet that’s going to stand up to the use and abuse that any child can put it through.

This isn’t because the durability of their Kindle Fire Kids Edition tablets is top-of-the-line in the durability department either.

They aren’t. Pure and simple.

Rather than try to make their tablets indestructible, Amazon backs them with a two-year no questions asked, full warranty. What does no questions asked mean?

Milk gets spilled on it… It gets replaced for free.

Dog buries it in the backyard… It gets replaced for free (so long as you find it)

It takes a trip down the steps and the screen gets shattered… It gets replaced for free.

Are you starting to see a pattern here? Just like the instances above, life happens.

The good news is, regardless of what happens to the tablets, Amazon will replace them an unlimited amount of times for two years.

This means that it doesn’t matter how durable the case is on the Kindle Fire Kids Edition, or how good your child may be with electronics. The bottom line is if the tablet gets broken, Amazon will replace it for you for free.

My Recent Experience With The Amazon Replacement Warranty

The reason I’m writing this post for everyone is that I recently had to deal with replacing a Kindle Fire K >Kids Tablets With Wifi.

I wanted to be able to show everyone coming to the site exactly how to do things like set up Wi-Fi, install new games, and answer a few other questions that you may have. To do this, and review the new generation of Kindle tablets, I needed to have one of the new tablets.

Well, I ordered the tablet before it came out back in June and honestly, I hadn’t even taken it out of the box yet. Imagine my surprise when I did open it a couple of weeks ago and found that it wouldn’t work.

When I first took it out of the box, the very first thing that I did was try and turn it on. Unfortunately, it failed the power up, and my immediate response was to plug it in and charge it up overnight.

I did notice when I plugged it in that it didn’t have a little blue light indicating that it was charging like some of the other previous generation Kindles.

At first, I thought that maybe they had just gotten rid of the feature, but as I found out the next morning, this certainly wasn’t the case. This tablet was broken on delivery.

Worst of all, I was well out of my window to get a replacement sent from Amazon by normal means.

So, I picked up the phone and called Kindle support. Thankfully, they told me not to worry about it at all. Since it is a Kindle Fire Kids Edition, it qualifies for unlimited replacements for two years under their warranty.

By the end of a 15-minute phone call, I had a shipping label printed, and the tablet already in the box going back to Amazon. Five days later I had a brand-new Kindle Fire HD 8 Kids Edition delivered to my home.

While I’ve always been a big advocate for the fact that Amazon would replace their kids’ edition tablets as many times as necessary for two years, I’ve always been a little leery about how the entire process works.

You know how it goes, if something sounds too good to be true, it generally is. Well, I’m very happy to say that this certainly is not the case when it comes to getting the kids edition tablets replaced under Amazons 2 year worry free warranty.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of how rough your child may be with their toys, accidents do happen from time to time. No matter what you try to do to prevent it, a children’s tablet is going to get a nick, scratch, or other damages if it’s being played with.

After my dealings with Amazon and the replacement process for the Kindle Fire Kids Edition tablet line, I must say that I’m very impressed with exactly how well this durable little kids’ tablet truly is.

At the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter which tablet is the most durable on the market, but instead what company stands behind their tablets the best.

If you’re ready to add an educational tablet to your child’s life, and you’re concerned about them breaking it, then I must strongly recommend that you check out the Kindle fire kids’ edition tablet line.

Amazon Fire Tablet 7 vs. Fire Tablet K >

Child-proof value

As with its Echo Dots, Amazon is offering kids edition versions of its Fire Tablets for a more premium price than the originals. However, these kid tablets offer some intriguing extras like enhanced parental controls, tons of kid-friendly content, and kid-proof cases.

Kid-proof case included Industry-leading parental controls One year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited included Expandable microSD storage

Not HD resolution More expensive than standard Fire 7 Tablet

The Fire 7 Tablet is a great entry point into the Amazon ecosystem. It starts cheap and is often on discount, and gives you access to all the great tablet-y content you'd want (minus Google Play), hands-free Alexa, and expandable storage.

Unbeatable entry price Expandable microSD storage

Not HD resolution Lower-quality mono speaker

You want to get your youngsters an Amazon Fire Tablet, but which should you buy? There are several different size options in the Fire Tablet lineup, and some are made specifically for kids. We're taking a look specifically at the 7-inch form factor today, so let's take a look at what makes these tablets different, and which is the right fit for you and your family.

Adult-focused vs. kid-proof

The Amazon Fire 7 Tablet is a great buy for just about anyone looking for an inexpensive, entertainment-focused tablet. It's capable enough to keep the kids entertained while not costing enough to pull your hair out if it gets accidentally destroyed. You can also get all the (non-Google) major content services on there as well as a dedicated kids mode to keep those little fingers from buying a new dollhouse or even a real tiny house on your Amazon account.

However, you may notice that when hover your mouse or your finger over that Buy Now button that there's both a regular Fire 7 Tablet and a Fire 7 Kids Edition, so what gives?

Break it down now.

Spec-for-spec, there isn't much difference between these Fire Tablets. In fact, under the hood, they're basically the same device. However, it all comes down to the extras.

Parental Controls Yes Yes
FreeTime Unlimited Not included One year included
Warranty 90-day 2-year

Price is one of the main differences. Depending on what deals Amazon is promoting, the Fire 7 Kids Edition is anywhere from $10 more to double the price of the regular Fire 7 Tablet. So what do you get for that price difference? A few features that may be very important to parents, particularly parents of younger children.

For starters, the Fire 7 Kids Edition comes with a free year of FreeTime Unlimited, ordinarily $3 per month for a single child or up to $70 per year for a family plan. FreeTime Unlimited provides enhanced parental controls and puts the device in a kid-friendly mode with a different user interface and tons of content that is specifically geared towards younger children. With this FreeTime Unlimited content, you won't have to constantly buy new games or shows to entertain your little ones. FreeTime also prohibits children from accessing social media apps and prevents them from using Alexa. However, Amazon acknowledges that you know your kids best, so you as a parent do have the ability to exit FreeTime mode with a passcode.

The Fire 7 Kids Edition also comes with a durable and practically kid-proof case that will protect the tablet from all kinds of mishaps. That case alone would cost you around $25 if you were to purchase it separately. Additionally, the Fire 7 Kids Edition includes a two-year worry-free guarantee. The regular Fire 7 Tablet only comes with a 90-day limited warranty, and if you wanted to extend it to two years it would cost you an extra $10 or so. With the way kids treat their toys and, well, everything else, you can easily see the value in this included service.

Just in case

The FreeTime case that is included with the Fire 7 Kids Edition Tablet certainly offers great protection, is friendly to small hands, and still allows easy access to all the ports and buttons.

However, you don't have to get Amazon's FreeTime case to protect your Fire 7 Tablet from the kids. There are a number of other cases available at various prices though that will also do the trick. So if you wanted to save a bit of money, buy the regular Fire 7 Tablet and pick up another protective case for less than the one that is included with the Kids Edition.

So which should you buy?

If you're purely buying a tablet for your kids, spend the extra money and get the Kids Edition. It's worth the investment, not least for that worry-free two-year warranty. It's also a single purchase that comes 100% child-equipped, with that tough-as-hell case and the included one-year subscription to kids content.

You can provide the same experience by buying a regular Fire Tablet at $50, but you should probably only get one of those if you're going to be buying for an older child/teenager or it's going to be used by yourself a decent amount of the time. If that sounds more like your scenario, then this option is for you. Buy a more grown-up case and slap in a microSD card and use it as a grown-up would!

Hot k >Peace of mind in a 7-inch tablet

The Fire 7 Kids Edition Tablet is more expensive than its regular sibling, but what you get for that price is a whole lot of peace of mind and security.

Frugal fire favorite

With hands-free Alexa, multiple fun colors, and access to tons of great content, the Fire 7 Tablet is a great little entertainment gadget to have around.
