HP TouchPad Accessories Begin to Arrive at Retail
The Griffin Screen Protector was packed with a screen cleaning cloth and priced at $16.88. In addition to the TouchPad version, similar matte-finish Griffin screen protectors were also available for the RIM Playbook and several Android tablets. No other TouchPad accessories were on display, HP-branded or otherwise.
Veer Drops $100 off Full Retail, Now Free with Contract
Several years ago, much hoopla was made when Palm's Centro hit "free" status after nearly a year after hitting the market. But the new HP Veer 4G has already hit that price at several retailers within days of its initial availability. Amazon Wireless and Best Buy Mobile are now selling the Veer in both color choices with the usual 2yr contract for free, though AT&T's price is still the same $99.99 as it was at launch.
More surprisingly, the Veer has seen a swift decrease in its full retail unsubsidized price. Amazon Wireless is now offering both colors of the Veer without a contract for $349 and free shipping, almost certainly a record drop for a brand-new GSM device. Best Buy and AT&T are all still selling the Veer at its original full retail price of $449, however.
Best Buy Preparing Stores for TouchPad
A recent trip to one Best Buy last weekend revealed the early stages of a more substantial HP presence. The first store I visited had only a small 2-device standalone HP display in the smartphone area of BB Mobile. A white Veer was powered on and usable while a non-functional black dummy Veer was positioned alongside it.
Wal-Mart Preparing Stores for TouchPad Arrival
With word that the TouchPads were appearing in Wal-Mart's internal inventory system and new displays being installed on the 6th, I visited two Wal-Mart stores in the Charlotte, NC area earlier this week to see if any additional evidence was on display. Both stores were in the process of carving out new tablet areas where e-readers and mp3 players were previously displayed. While an Apple iPad endcap dominated the department, signage for HP's 32Gb wi-fi Touchpad was already in place. Curiously, the $499 16Gb Touchpad is nowhere to be seen, a puzzling choice given the value-oriented nature of many of Wal-Mart's offerings and the popularity of the lower-priced iPad and Android tablet SKUs.
Discounted AT&T Veer 4G Available to WebOS Developers
This is a small but encouraging step that shows HP remains committed to getting the WebOS developer community the latest hardware for actual device testing. The standard Veer price from AT&T without subsidies or discounts is $449.99.
Aceeca PDA32 News Updates
The company's Garnet handheld is about to become much more appealing with the announcement that the major task of implementing Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules to the device is completed. Aceeca is expecting to begin shipping limited quantities of wireless PDA32s later this month. As this is a very high priority for their team, expect further news on this subject soon.
HP TouchPad Goes on Sale July 1st
HP TouchPad will be available from U. S. retailers, commercial resellers and direct from HP with the option of either 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage for $499.99 and $599.99, respectively. Preorders in North America and Europe will begin June 19.
HP also announced it will be partnering with AT&T to introduce a connected version of HP TouchPad later this summer.
HP Veer 4G Initial Impressions
My initial impression out of the box is that the Veer is impossibly tiny! I was expecting something along the lines of a reduced-size Pre but I was not expecting anything this Lilliputian! The Veer can hide completely under a credit card! It slips safely into a shirt pocket without a moment's hesitation. Without a doubt, this little gizmo is the best execution yet of Palm's "river pebble" theme as first seen at CES 2009 with the original Pre.

HP Posts New Device Transition Gu > Posted Wednesday, May 04, 2011 11:11:48 AM PST by Kris Keilhack
The most relevant devices discussed in the guide is of course the just-announced Veer 4G, as it is the most similar to its predecessor devices from a hardware standpoint as well as from its development architecture since it runs the existing Mojo and PDK apps and has not been designed around the Enyo development library. Additional info found in this guide is confirmation from HP that the Veer will ship with WebOS 2.1 and will offer much-improved performance with its carryover Pixi-style screen size and resolution.
One interesting comment from the guide discuss the Veer's close ties to the Pixi as far as app compatibility and screen resolution--stating quite bluntly: "If you were worried about performance with Pixi, you won't need to be with Veer!"
HP Veer 4G Announced for AT&T
Somewhat surprisingly, the Veer will be an AT&T-exclusive device in the USA, something not seen in this country since the days of the Treo 680 in 2006 and Treo 750 in 2007. The device will also be offered in both black and white color schemes, as we discussed on Monday.
AT&T Veer Spotted in New Color
The diminutive device has reared its head in three official-looking promo shots, showcasing a white body with a contrasting black front bezel and buttons. It's unknown what WebOS version will power this device, as it's likely to ship with WebOS 2.1, but potentially 2.2 or even 2.3. The Veer also has the dubious distinction, as some have speculated it is possibly the final original device designed by Palm before the HP acquisition.
Palm Fares Poorly in Latest Smartphone Poll
In March of 2011, only 2% of those surveyed indicated that they had purchased a WebOS device, in no small part due to the platform's almost non-existence on domestic carriers. As of this writing, new WebOS smartphones are currently only available from Verizon (Pre 2) and AT&T (Pre Plus & Pixi Plus) in the USA, with neither carrier giving much of a promotional push to the devices.

Blending form and function, elegant design and multitasking power, Galaxy Tab S2 is the new flagship in Samsung’s line of tablets—and the ultimate device for experiencing and sharing digital content. From the creators of Samsung’s award-winning televisions and large-screen smartphones, the Galaxy Tab S2 is available for Preorder from Amazon starting today and will be officially released beginning September 3.

It also reflects our commitment to listen to and learn from consumer feedback, giving Samsung users even more of what they love.”
With a Super AMOLED display that delivers vivid, deep and rich colors that bring digital content to life, as well as expandable memory options with 32GB of storage as standard, the Galaxy Tab S2 packs a vast array of features into a slim, stylish and featherweight design. With the Galaxy Tab S2, users will have no trouble taking command of their digital lifestyle, whether on the couch or on the go.
The Galaxy Tab S2 comes in the world’s thinnest and lightest metal frame of its size, highlighted by a vivid display in a sleek form factor. It features:
- Super AMOLEDDisplay: A stunning Super AMOLED display showcases all forms of digital content with striking clarity and sharpness. Incredibly slim form factor: With a profile of just 5.6mm for both the 9.7-inch and 8.0-inch versions, the Galaxy Tab S2 is Samsung’s thinnest tablet yet, fully 16 percent thinner than its predecessor. Amazingly lightweight: Thanks to its slim design, the Galaxy Tab S2 weighs in at a scarcely believable 9.4 oz.* (8.0-inch) and 13.8 oz.* (9.7-inch). Ample storage options: 32GB of standard memory—expandable up to a spacious 128GB—means users can easily take all of their apps, photo and video content wherever they go.
The compact Galaxy Tab S2 also packs a punch, making multitasking and staying productive easier than ever. Whether at home, on the road or in the office, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 empowers connected users to manage their lives directly from their tablet. Among other technologies are:
- Octa-core processor: Blazing processor speeds make toggling through multiple apps and streaming video content lag-free. Multi-Window and Pop-Up Window: Multi-Window lets users easily split the screen and run two apps simultaneously. Pop-Up Window allows for quick movement between multiple apps without missing a beat. Microsoft Office on-the-go: The Galaxy Tab S2 comes equipped and preloaded with Microsoft Office Solutions** for creating, editing, or sharing documents away from home—meaning users can be productive anywhere. Fingerprint Scanner: The patented fingerprint scanner incorporates an advanced security sensor, keeping content secure while letting users quickly and easily access their device by simply touching the home key. Content for You: Stay informed with a free three-month Next Issue subscription and pre-loaded content from CNN.

Users can open and share calendars, messages, notes, and other files across all of their devices. They can instantly drag and drop photos from the Tab S2 to a phone—or answer a phone call right from the tablet’s screen. Quick Connect: Cut the cord clutter using Quick Connect to easily search for and connect to nearby compatible Samsung devices, from cameras to printers to friends’ devices. Transfer files, use the Tab S2 as a remote camera viewfinder, or mirror what’s on the tablet on a television screen—no wires necessary. Stream TV content directly to the tablet: Using proprietary Bluetooth technology, the Galaxy Tab S2 allows users to stream content directly from a compatible Samsung TV, even when the TV is turned off. Third party messaging app support: Through SideSync technology, the Tab S2 offers third-party app support so that conversations from various messaging apps can be pushed from a phone to the tablet, even when the devices are in separate rooms.
The Galaxy Tab S2 is available in a variety of configurations to allow consumers to select the device best for them and can be pre-ordered from August.

Amazon refreshes Fire tablets and adds new Fire HD 8 K >

Share All sharing options for: Amazon refreshes Fire tablets and adds new Fire HD 8 Kids Edition
Amazon today announced a modest refresh of its Fire line of tablets, as well as a new Kids Edition version of its Fire HD 8 device. The Fire 7 is now thinner and lighter, the company says, with a slight improvement in its display for improved contrast and clearer text. The Fire HD 8 remains the same, but Amazon is cutting its price from $89.99 to $79.99. The Fire 7 will remain at $49.99. The new devices start shipping on June 7th with preorders starting today.
For the first time, Amazon is expanding its Kids Edition variant to the Fire HD 8. That means parents who fancy the parental controls made available with Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited software can now order an 8-inch, HD version of the tablet. FreeTime Unlimited is a $2.99 per month subscription service that lets parents monitor and control a kid’s device usage by app and restricts the types of content kids can access across all categories, from books and games to videos and websites. Last month, Amazon launched a new web and mobile dashboard parents can use to monitor all of this activity as well.
Prior to today, Amazon only offered a Fire 7 Kids Edition for $99.99. As is the case with the standard models, the Fire HD 8 is $30 more, putting the Kids Edition version at $129.99. On top of one free year of FreeTime Unlimited, the Kids Edition devices also come with a free two-year “worry free” guarantee, meaning Amazon will replace the device no questions asked regardless of the type of damage done to it. It also come with protective cover in blue, pink and yellow colors.
As part of the tablet refresh, Amazon is making its Alexa voice assistant available on all Fire tablets in the UK, the first expansion of the feature since its US-only launch last October. The new tablets will receive the Alexa update out of the box. Older devices in the UK will get in as an over-the-air software update some time soon, Amazon confirmed.
None of these updates do anything to change the puzzling fact that Amazon has altogether stopped selling tablets capable of displaying 1080p video, even though pushing its Prime Video service is perhaps the main reason they exist. The Fire HD 8’s new pricing does make it even more affordable, but anyone waiting for Amazon to release a tablet even on par with its 2013 HDX lineup is going to be disappointed.
As for its Fire HD 10, Amazon says it has no news to announce about an update to the device, but the company said it does intend to continue selling the device for the foreseeable future. That tablet remains backordered until July in the US, however, so it may be best to hold off on purchasing one in the event Amazon does indeed decide to update it some time this summer or later on in the fall.
