How to find a Private Label product to sell on Amazon

More and more people are discovering the huge opportunities offered by Private Label selling on the Amazon FBA marketplace. The first question for new sellers is “how do I find a good Private Label product to sell on Amazon?”

Private Label – creating your own brand and then selling either re-branded generic products or manufacturing your own original product. These products are usually sourced from China using Alibaba. Sellers will then create a new Amazon listing using a unique barcode.

In this post, we will discuss exactly how to go about building a list of viable product opportunities to explore. From this list, you should then be able to select a winning product to sell.

Step 1: Use Amazon as your Starting Point

Amazon is where you want to sell your products, so Amazon is where you should go to see what people are looking to buy. Rather than scratch your head wondering “what should I sell”, approach it from the angle of “what do people WANT?”

So how do we find out what people are searching for on Amazon? Take a look at the following sections first;

Amazon Hot New Releases

Amazon Hot New Releases

The Amazon Hot New Releases list displays products across all categories that have just entered the Amazon marketplace and are already “selling like hotcakes.” This gives you an indication of what is in demand right now. It may not be an indication of success over time, so take this information with a grain of salt.

You can view the current list here: Amazon hot new releases

Amazon Best Sellers

Amazon Best Sellers lists the top 100 best-selling products in each category. This is updated hourly and based on sales velocity. You can see what products are selling consistently well over a longer period of time. You can drill down into sub-categories to get even more ideas and inspiration.

You can view the current list here: Amazon Best Sellers

Using the Amazon Best Sellers Rank to select a product

Many first time PL (Private Label) sellers will look at BSR (Best Sellers Rank) to estimate the sales volume for a particular product.

Best seller rankings are variable depending on the category. The drawback to using this as a selection criteria is that popular categories such as Home & Kitchen and Electronics will have a broader range than a less popular category such as Industrial & Scientific.

When you are looking at BSR, be aware of the product category you are evaluating and use tools like JungleScout or UnicornSmasher to give a rough estimate as to what a product is selling month to month. These estimation tools tend to exaggerate the sales volume. Actual sales will usually be less than forecast as so many other factors will come in to play.

Also using a browser plugin tools like CamelCamelCamel and Keepa will enable you to view a product’s BSR over time. These tools are also helpful for highlighting seasonality patterns on specific products.

You can also use the FREE Jungle Scout Sales Estimator to get monthly sales volume for any product being sold on Amazon – Jungle Scout Sales Estimator

Amazon Movers and Shakers

Amazon Movers & Shakers

This is like a sub-category of Best Sellers. It shows trending products that are moving quickly up the best-selling ranks denoted by green arrows and a percentage increase (similar to stock signals). This is valuable for pinpointing best sellers that are trending more so than others in a category.

You can view the current list here: Amazon Movers & Shakers

Amazon Most Wished For

Amazon keeps track of what people put on their wish list. This is what people REALLY want. So why not use this list as inspiration for providing them exactly what they have always been looking for?

You can view the current list here: Amazon Most Wished for

Amazon Most Gifted

Amazon has gift wrapping services available and allows merchants to provide this service for their customers. Being as such, Amazon tracks the sales that include gift wrapping, so they know what products are being bought as gifts. This is another indicator of the popularity of the products.

You can view the current list here: Amazon Most Gifted

Pro Tip: If you are a private label seller using Amazon FBA, you should have “gift wrapping” and “gift messaging” checked in your seller central backend for your products! This doesn’t cost anything to you as a seller, and people love to have options. Giving your customers the ability to give your product as a gift is another value-added benefit that can set your product apart from the competition and will result in more sales.

Step 2: Use These Basic Guidelines for your Private Label Product Selection

1. Make sure the product is “Smaller than a loaf of bread” and “Lighter than a pair of Shoes” because you want a product that is not going to cost a lot in shipping. Shipping costs from overseas tend to be based on unit volume, you need to be keenly aware that shipping larger products will cost you more and eat into your profit margin. Also, remember that Amazon has an oversize limit and this limit is 18 inches x 14 inches x 8 inches. If you go oversize, you will pay a lot more in storage fees which you do not want, especially on your first product. Also, sellers often get caught out with stock levels on their first product. It is a big advantage to have a product that can be priority shipped by air in an emergency without killing profits.

2. Select a product with low seasonality. This means you want to pick a product that has solid demand and can be sold year round. Selecting a product like Halloween costumes would limit you to only 30-60 days before demand dropped significantly. Having seasonal products also severely limits your cash flow which will prevent you from scaling your brand.

3. Select a product with no licenses, trademarks, or patents. The last thing you want is a letter or call from a lawyer asking you to cease and desist selling your product on Amazon after you have invested thousands of dollars! Use the United States Patent and Trademark Office database (called TESS) to search for existing trademarks. Google has a patent search tool which can help you locate patents on a specific product.

We have more information on Trademarks here: Amazon Private Label: Searching for a Trademark

4. Avoid electronic items or those operated by batteries (of any kind, but especially lithium).

5. Product reviews indicating low to moderate competition relative to the category (generally speaking, between 0-500 reviews)

Pro Tip: Look at the number one product on page one and record the number of reviews. Then look at the rest of the products on page one. What is the range of reviews on page one? If one product has over 500 reviews, but all the others have just a few, then there is room for you on page one and it is likely you will be able to compete for one of these page one spots.

6. Choose a product that has a sales price point between $20 and $80 USD. Consider that Amazon takes a big chunk of your gross profit in fees. Expect to pay Amazon anywhere between 35%-50% of your gross profit in fees. This can be closer to 50% if participating in Sponsored Ads or Amazon Marketing Services. Understanding that generally, the higher the price range, the higher the profit margin but also, the more you will have to pay for inventory. This is a business consideration that you will have to take into account.

7. Try and select a product that has plenty of room for improvement. Either by improving the listing quality, or improving on the product itself with enhancements. Look at products where the average feedback rating is below 4.0. This means you have the opportunity to tweak the product and hopefully outsell the existing products which still have problems. You should actually read the reviews on of the product to see what the problems are and whether it is something that can easily be rectified.

8. Finally, remember you are building a brand not just selling a single product. Look for products where there is the potential to create an entire range. For example, maybe you decide you want to sell a dog collar. Dog collars need dog leashes. And dog leashes might need dog harnesses. If you have a dog, maybe he is old and needs some all natural supplements. Pretty soon you have a full range of products all around the dog’s niche. The benefits from this really come into play once you are building up your website and social media presence. If you start building an email list you can promote your new dog-related products to your existing customers.

The opposite to this would be to pick a fad toy that may be popular for a year or two at best, and then as more competition floods the space, it rapidly becomes a race to the bottom in terms of price. This is something you want to avoid as a private label seller. The point is – think long-term sustainable profits, not short-term skyrocket sales.

Step 3: Create a Spreadsheet in Google Sheets and Build a List of your Top 10-20 Products.

1. Open up Google Sheets

2. Using the guidelines above, start compiling a list of products that meet these criteria.

Private Label Product Ranker

3. You can use our PL Product Ranker as a tool to help you list and score your opportunities. This will help you to focus in on a great product to sell Private Label.

Simply fill in your email and we will send you a copy of this awesome tool instantly!

Step 4: Use Amazon-Specific Data Mining Tools to conduct your final analysis

There are several tools available now to Amazon sellers to cut your research time drastically. The way you use these tools can mean the difference between picking a winner or picking a dud, so let’s be sure we understand how each one works and what you can use it for:

1. JungleScout Pro – We will use this tool to determine the average selling price, average number of reviews, average feedback score, and your estimated net profit after FBA fees.

2. CamelCamelCamel – Use this tool to scope out best sellers rank over time for a product.

3. Helium 10 – We will use this tool to look at the popularity of the keywords associated with your product. Type in your main keyword and look at the estimated monthly traffic volume on Amazon for that product.

4. Google Trends – Use the Google Trends site to determine if there is seasonality to your product. If you see peaks and valleys in the trend over a 1 year period, it means there is seasonality and you should not select this product. You will also know if the product is generally increasing in popularity.

5. Helium 10 – Use Helium 10 (free to trial) to easily find related keywords associated with your product and find other related traffic growth trends.

As you can see, selecting a good product to sell on Amazon is a process, but it is not difficult. With the proper tools and strategies, you can easily build a list of viable candidates to select from and begin the process of sourcing your chosen private label product.

Now it’s your turn! Use this guide as a starting point. Remember do not be tempted to skip any steps. And be sure to check out our Facebook group the Amazon FBA Masters

Finding the right products to sell on Amazon can be tough. Often you have little idea of how well an item will sell until before you’ve made the initial investment and bought that product. Although there are never any guarantees, one way to increase your chances of optimal sales is to choose to sell trending products.

Trending products on Amazon are those products which, due to popularity, are being shown in Amazon’s Trending Items section. A product’s appearance as a trending product is usually temporary so quick action is required in order to take advantage of this avenue of selling.

3 Ways to Find Trending Products On Amazon

Before you can begin to sell trending products you do, of course, have to find them first. There are a few ways to source trending products and, the following is a guide to the top three methods.

Amazon and Other Popular Shopping Websites

Most shopping websites will have their own version of trending products which can be found within the site. On Amazon, you can find trending products in the following ways:

Amazon Best Sellers Page: Fairly self-explanatory, this is a page on Amazon which features those products which are currently the most popular within their category. The term ‘best sellers’ can be a little misleading as there are a number of factors which go toward a product finding its way onto this page but, as a general rule of thumb, these products will sell reasonably well.

Amazon Movers & Shakers: Not to be confused with best sellers, products within the Amazon Movers & Shakers are those which have shown the largest improvement in sales ranking within the past 24 hours. Amazon Movers & Shakers fluctuates greatly so it’s worth being prudent and watching a product over a number of days to see if it remains a ‘mover and shaker’ before committing to purchasing the product to sell.

Amazon Hot New Releases: You can probably guess what this one is about but, just in case, here’s what you need to know: The Amazon Hot New Releases page features newly released products which have gained a significant amount of attention. These include products across many genres which can be accessed by clicking the required genre on the left-hand side of the page. The advantage of selling hot new releases is that you’re tapping into a potential big seller at the start of its selling life.

Social Media

In today’s world, there’s not much that happens that doesn’t happen on social media. As well as keeping in touch with friends and family, social media is an excellent source of Amazon Seller inspiration. To take advantage of this, try:

Reddit: This social news site is a great source for finding new and unusual products. Featuring search tools such as hot, rising and new, Reddit allows you to browse through a huge number of subjects in order to see what people are talking about, including great new products.

Pinterest: For the uninitiated, Pinterest is a social media site which allows users to share photographs of themselves and their interests. Scroll past the selfies and you’ll often mind a treasure chest of new and popular products.

Instagram: Like Pinterest, Instagram centres around photographs and videos. Users can search by topic or by a contributor in order to browse an enormous number of products and items of interest.

Twitter: Not just a platform for President Trump to broadcast his thoughts, Twitter is a great source of product information for sellers. Check out the trending stories and hashtags to find out what’s hot right now in the Twitterverse.

YouTube: Video has, time and time again, been proven to be hugely successful when it comes to selling products and services. The most popular video site worldwide, YouTube’s Trending section allows users to take a look at the videos that are currently popular, offering inspiration for new products to sell.

Trend & Product Review Publications

If you’re looking for a more in-depth approach to finding new products to sell, there are a number of publications out there for you. These include:

Trend Hunter is an online magazine specifically designed to offer product inspiration to online sellers. As well as interesting and on-topic articles, Trend Hunter features easy to search product categories including fashion, electronics and much more.

Online trend and innovation platform, Springwise, is an endless source of product inspiration for sellers. As well as searching for products and innovations on-site, users can also sign up to receive product news straight to their inboxes.

Uncrate is a hugely popular men’s buying guide. Although the content leans heavily toward cars and tech, there are plenty of other products and ideas to be found on the site with a little patience.

Want some Cool Material to sell online? Then, this is the site for you. Primarily targeted toward men, this easy to search site covers fashion, tech and consumables as well as quirky gadgets perfect for selling online.

Aquiremag is an e-zine for the consumer who has to have the latest tech and gadgets. As well as finding inspiration on-site, members can sign up to receive the regular newsletter featuring cool innovations and the Monday Club which highlights what’s new and coming soon.

Werd is an incredibly popular blog for men which showcases the latest fashion, tech and sport innovations. The Gifts section features a whole host of great ideas for Amazon sellers looking for trending products.

Canopy is an Amazon curated online shop which sells just about anything you can possibly think of. A treasure trove of gifts, fashion and consumables, this one is a must for the Amazon seller looking for inspiration.

Tools to Verify Trending Products

Once you’ve identified an Amazon trending product, you’ll want to check it out before committing to the purchase. You can do this in a number of ways including:

Google Trends is a one-stop shop for finding out what’s hot and what’s not. Once you’ve identified your product, log onto Google Trends and put the name of the product into the search engine. If it really is a genuine trending product, it’ll be there. If it’s not, you may want to re-think before buying.

The ever-popular Jungle Scout is a great way of verifying whether or not a product is trending. As well as a whole lot of other features, Jungle Scout allows you to search for a product and get immediate facts and figures as to its popularity.

Asinhunt is a sales estimator and product search tool that many Amazon sellers would never be without. This clever tool allows users to check on a product’s statistics and, even estimates for you the approximate number of sales to be expected from that product.

Selling Trending Products – The Pros and Cons

Now that you know how to find them, the question is, should you be selling trending products? Like everything, there are positives and negatives to this which are:

When a product is trending, it is, at that moment, extremely popular. This means that you have a good chance of selling quite a few units in a short space of time. If you manage to get in on a product when it’s brand new, the selling curve can be quite wide and can be extremely lucrative.

A trend, by nature, is something which tends to be popular for a short period of time, to be replaced quickly by something else. For this reason, when selling a trending product, it’s unrealistic to expect to maintain high sales for any length of time.

Selling Amazon trending products can be extremely lucrative when you know what you’re doing. The trick is to understand that the sales life of a trending product can be short – and to, therefore, make sure that you don’t over-purchase stock which will then languish in an Amazon warehouse once the trend has run its course.

Amazon. com New Releases: The best-selling new & future releases in Tools & Home Improvement

The new releases in gaming may have slowed down, but there’s an extra helping of sales to make up for it…

Not sure what your Thanksgiving plans are – passing out in a food coma, arguing with your racist uncle, playing video games while ignoring extended family, or training to bash someone over the head during a Black Friday sale. Whatever you do, I hope your time is a happy one, because things are going swimmingly for LT. Cool dude Brett Elston has officially joined the team and the Laser Time Patreon is doing better than ever. I can’t say the same for Amazon’s new releases though. After all the splashy launches last week, things are pretty slim, especially with games. Still, there are some impressive sales going on, so it’s not a complete bust. Check it all out below, and remember, anything you buy via our links to Amazon helps support all of us at no extra cost to you! Here’s what’s coming this Turkey Day…

WRC 5

So it’s come to this… Despite being the fifth game in the series, this has to be the first time I’ve heard of World Rally Championship. Though I blame myself for that – I like arcade racers more than sims, and I prefer boring sims to even more boring rally games. WRC 5 hit Europe some days ago to average reviews, and now the speedy time trials are coming stateside at a time even fewer are likely to notice it. Then again, with WRC 5 being the biggest release of a slim week, that earned it a little free publicity here, so maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea.

Let’s Sing 2016 (With Microphone)

There are few things I enjoy more than a night of karaoke with pals, but I’ve never really been one for karaoke games over a traditional private room or bar night. Maybe the newest edition of Let’s Sing will change my mind. From publisher Maximum Games, this year’s version comes with a mic plus… 35 songs. Is it just me, or does that sound like a REALLY small collection of songs? That’ll last like 30 hours tops! Artists include Sia, John Legend, and Maroon 5, and the fact that I’m even writing about this game tells you how few games are out this week.

Ricki and the Flash

You may pretend to not like the work of Diablo Cody, but I don’t believe it. Young Adult and Juno still hold up really well, and Meryl Streep is the greatest in basically everything she does, even when doing an impression of Stevie Nicks. When playing an aging rock goddess who tries her best to be a mom at the same time. Maybe it’s just me getting older, but I watched the trailer for this with my own mother and got a little misty-eyed. Why not grab this and watch it with your own parent over the holidays?

Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense

This is bar-none my favorite concert film of all time. Filmed like no live concert before it, this was just the type of strange, artistic approach that Talking Heads deserves. This 1983 masterpiece by the band and Jonathan Demme is a must watch for any fan of music, Talking Heads, people who sing to lamps, and oversized suits. When I worked at a video store, I put this one on all the TV all the time – it’s great background music, and reminded the older customers of when they saw David Byrne live in the ’80s.

Shaun the Sheep Movie

I’ve been an Aardman animation fan for decades, but this adventure, and really the entire Shaun The Sheep series has been a cultural blind spot for me. Probably because I simply got too old to pay attention to any Aardman work that isn’t a new Wallace & Gromit short. Reviews for Shaun’s big screen adventure were pretty strong, and at a busy time of the year like this one, perhaps you should pick this up to watch with the family – or at the very least, to distract any annoying relatives under the age 10.

Ikiru (The Criterion Collection)

If you’re even a slight film snob (like the former video store clerk writing all this), you’ve probably seen some of Akira Kurosawa’s incredible samurai films like Yojimbo and Rashomon. However, you may have skimped on his stuff set in the present day, even though movies like Ikiru are no less essential. Meaning “To Live,” this 1952 film is about an aging businessman finding happiness in life just as his is about to end from stomach cancer. Takashi Shimura is the star and one of Kurosawa’s favorite actors, doing the best work of his career in this classic. Now that Criterion has given it the HD treatment, it’s way past time for you to jump on the bandwagon.

The Quay Brothers: Collected Short Films

Did you stay up late watching MTV in the ’90s, waiting to see the fucked up cartoons that they’d only show after 10pm? You know, like the Tool videos that looked like the fever dreams of a mental patient? Well, several of the weirdest ones were directed by the Quay Brothers, a pair of animators that have been making nightmare fuel for a long time. This is the HD collection of their many short films, sure to freak out all your millennial friends! Perfect viewing for any holiday party.

Miyazaki fans should not miss this one!

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Out this November, this looks like a great gift for those you love most.
