Amazon Cloud Player For iOS
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 02:00 PM
"Amazon's Cloud Player launched last year with iPhone compatibility conspicuously absent, but as of today, the iOS app has found its way to the smaller screen, giving users the ability to access their music stored in the cloud."
No longer do you have to rely on the mobile site for this, which is a good thing since that was pretty basic. That being said, I pretty much stick with iTunes and use their iTunes Match service for $25.00 USD per year, keeps it simple that way. If i want to get some deals from Amazon, I buy them there and just import into my iTunes. How do you handle music and your library?

"Apple is back in court, trying again to stop Amazon from using the term ‘Appstore,' charging advertising for the online retailer's Kindle Fire tablet misleads consumers. The tech giant wants the ads to stop, claiming they mistakenly give the impression Apple endorses the Amazon device."
This has the makings for a long drawn out war, as I don't see Amazon giving in so easy on this. I get why Apple is trying to protect what it deems is their name, but I certainly don't think people are stupid enough to be confused between Amazon's Appstore and the Apple one. or are they? What are your thoughts?

Will The Rumored Amazon Tablet Be DOA?
Posted by Michael Knutson in "The Competition" @ 09:30 PM
"Last week, TechCrunch reported that Amazon’s 7" Kindle tablet was "very real" and would ship for the 2011 holidays. Almost a year before that, the WSJ reported that "Steve Jobs declared the seven-inch tablet ‘dead on arrival.’" So the stage is set for an interesting war of beliefs and concepts this holiday shopping season. In one corner, the world’s most trafficked internet retail stores and Kindle inventor, Amazon, and in the other, Apple, the most valuable company on the planet and inventor of the iPad."
Another debate on the merits of the 7-inch vs. the 10-inch tablet. We get a value proposition discussion, as well as a perceived value discussion. Amazon vs. Apple. Should be interesting! I think that pronouncing a competitor's product (or an entire genre) as "DOA" is not really a wise move, but Mr Jobs has been known to make statements that backfire. So what are your thoughts, is there room for an Amazon tablet, or is it destined to really be DOA?

Today's iPad Kindle App Update Removes Kindle Store Button
Posted by Jason Dunn in "Apple Talk" @ 11:01 AM
I was updating the apps on my iPad today - which is a daily occurrence that I wish Apple would streamline or automate somehow - and I noticed that the new Kindle app, released today, removes the Kindle Store button. This change has been brewing for a while now because Apple wants 30% of everything sold via any app. Taking 30% for selling an app itself is a good deal compared to the 50% cut most mobile developers we used to forking over in previous years. But when it comes to content where there are multiple parties involved and everyone wants a piece, 30% is untenable.
You have companies like Rhapsody and Amazon who are resellers of the content someone else creates - so they're the middle men - and Apple put a gun to their head and said "Give us 30% or get out". Amazon did the only thing that makes sense: they made the Kindle app a read-only tool, not a purchasing tool. Anyone using an iPad, myself included, will now have a degraded experience because I'll have to grab my Kindle 3 or Android phone in order to quickly purchase a book. The alternative is to buy the book via Safari on the iPad, and while it's not exactly difficult, it's certainly a lot less slower than buying from an app that allows for one-tap purchase of books.
What's your take on Apple's demand to have a 30% cut on every piece of content sold via an iOS app?

What's Your Digital Convenience Price Threshold?
Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 08:00 AM
In the tug of war between atoms and bits, how much does it take to sway you one way or another? Digital download or buying DVDs - which way do you roll? I bought the first episode of "Breaking Bad" on iTunes a few weeks ago, watched it yesterday, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Since I don't currently have an active Zip. ca account (it's a DVD rental service) I'd be looking at buying Breaking Bad season one. How do the numbers work out? Read more.

And Now Some News on the Legal Front.
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 11:14 AM
"Bloomberg reports that Steve Jobs will have to testify in an anti-trust suite which alleges that Apple operated a music-downloading monopoly."
According to the story, this involves "Apple's blockage of RealNetwork's Harmony software which briefly allowed users to use RealNetworks' music in iTunes and on iPods. A few days after Harmony was released, Apple updated its own software to block Harmony from working in Apple's Music ecosystem." Seems like this would go nowhere but I can understand Job's getting a subpoena to testify if he had specific information related to the case. In other legal news, Apple is suing Amazon. com over the use of the term "App Store," and Microsoft is protesting the awarding of the trademark. It does seem like a generic term to me, unless of course you put the Apple in front of it. What are your thoughts?

Perseus Books Signs With Apple
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM
"Despite threats from Amazon that it will stop selling the independent publisher's books if they sign on with Apple's iBookstore, Perseus Books Group, the largest independent publisher, has signed a deal with Apple."
Zagat and Workman Press also signed deals, so they certainly aren't responding favorably to pressure from Amazon to refrain from signing with Apple. There are are still several that haven't signed deals, but no matter (at least for me) since Amazon is set to come through with a Kindle App for the iPad, along with Barnes & Noble.

Apple Using Strong-Arm Tactics?
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM
"Ed Christman at Billboard contends that Apple is pressuring the record labels not to deal with Amazon and their Daily Deal, which allows users to purchase the album at a reduced price one day before it is generally released (on iTunes)."
According to the executive, "iTunes representatives have been urging labels to rethink their participation in the Amazon promotion and that they have backed up those warnings by withdrawing marketing support for certain releases featured as Daily Deals." I can't really blame them, and it appears some are listening to Apple as Capitol, Capitol Nashville and Jive all opted out of the Amazon Daily Deal promotion. Wonder how many more will opt out? I'm guessing most if not all, what are your thoughts?

Amazon's iPhone App Available now in U. K.
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM
"Amazon. com has extended its shopping app for iPhone users to the U. K. Like the U. S. version of the application, users can shop for products online and make purchases with their Amazon. com account. The application also lets users edit their Wish Lists, modify their orders, track shipments, and search photos for products that are available at Amazon. com."
Our friends in the U. K. have probably been waiting for this, it is such a handy app if you do any shopping at Amazon. com. Amazon's U. K. site has a page set up with information on it if you are so inclined to view it.

Amazon Drops Kindle Price
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 07:00 AM
"Amazon. com slashed the price of its Kindle e-reader, likely in response to vigorous competition from manufacturers such as Sony and the prospect of a huge battle with Apple in 2010."
That is if Apple comes out with a tablet, which seems to be at the forefront of the rumor mill these days. Regardless, the drop is to $259.00 USD for the regular Kindle, $279.00 USD if you want the one tied to 3G and able to download content while in the US as well as about 100 other countries. В

Pay With Amazon Mobile Payments Service
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM
"As the mobile landscape continues to expand, consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable making purchases over the web using their mobile phones. One of the reason's Apple App Store has been so successful is because of the easy, secure 1-click payment system tied into iTunes. Today, Amazon Payments is hoping to bring that kind of experience to other developers, merchants and potential app stores with the Amazon Mobile Payments Service (MPS)."
Unlike Google Checkout and PayPal, this type of service would be part of the application itself, and not a separate site. I like that aspect of it, being part of the site you are shopping at instead of having to go to another site to pay, seems a lot simpler and cleaner. And I suppose it is easier than having to pull out a credit card and input the number. I'm pretty sure I'd use this service if offered, what are your thoughts?

Amazon Taking Pre-Orders for Snow Leopard
Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM
"Just another sign that Apple's next generation OS is right around the corner, 9to5mac affiliate Amazon has begun taking pre-orders for Snow Leopard. The product is slated to ship in September and starts at $29 for a single user upgrade from Leopard."
All with pre-order price guarantees and free shipping, so if you don't have to have it the day it is released, this is a pretty good deal. The family pack is selling for $49.00 USD, and if you want to box set the program with iWork and iLife, the single user is $169.00 USD (family pack would be $229.00 USD).

Amazon Catching Hell For Controlling Its Own Data
Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 09:00 AM
"Delicious Library for iPhone isn't coming back as long as we're using Amazon's APIs, unless they decide to make an exception to section 4e."
Even by Shipley's own admission, it's Amazon's API and they have the right to control it any way they want. It's a shame they yanked an app that people like, but again, it's their right. I think in the end, the only thing it'll do is make developers less willing to use Amazon's APIs in the future for any projects, which won't really be helping Amazon.
Control comes at a price.

Kindle App for iPhone Now Includes Optimized Store
Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM
"Amazon. com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today launched a Kindle Store optimized for the Safari Web browser on iPhone. Now when users of the Kindle for iPhone app click on "Get Books," the new Kindle Store tailored for the size and shape of the iPhone and iPod touch screens automatically opens in Safari. This optimized Kindle store offers iPhone and iPod touch app users quick and easy access to the Kindle Store's 280,000 books, including 106 of 112 New York Times Best Sellers and most New Releases that are available for $9.99 or less."
The only knock I had on the Kindle App was that it didn't have a good mechanism for getting content onto the app; you had to browse the store through Safari and an interface that was anything but intuitive. Now, however, things are much easier and Amazon, as usual, did a hell of a job on the UI (it's very similar to their iPhone version of the web site). Basically, if you can live with reading books on the small screen, the iPhone could replace the Kindle if you wanted to (I don't, but it's a decent companion; no one can have my Kindle. Ever!).

Amazon is Number Two. By a Mile.
Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPods" @ 02:00 PM
"After its first full year selling tracks from all four major labels, Amazon's digital music store has become the second-largest a la carte service, according to industry estimates," Billboard reports. "But it's a very distant second to iTunes," Billboard reports. "Major-label sources say that they had hoped the company would have fared better than it did."
I both use and like Amazon's MP3 store. They're the first non-Apple service to get the integration with the iPod ecosystem correct and they do a damn good job of it. That being said, Amazon is almost never my first choice. You can't buy MP3's on remote devices (ie: the iPhone and iPod Touch) and browsing is nowhere near as intuitive as it is in iTunes (although the search feature on Amazon is infinitely better than the garbage Apple cranked into iTunes).
The bottom line is that the music industry was terrified of Apple becoming an online music monopoly so they gave Amazon things they wouldn't even give Apple to keep them at bay. While that may have scored them some "zing" points, it didn't really knock it out of the park from a business perspective and it didn't create the iTunes destroyer they hoped it would.
Amazon will continue to do well, but it's going to take a long time to knock iTunes off that pedestal, particularly in a time when we aren't even talking about iTunes being only the number one Online retailer of music, and are now comparing it to the likes of Wal-Mart and others in the brick and mortar world.

How Amazon's App Will Hurt Retailers This Christmas
Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 02:00 PM
I don't know what it is about the WRT-54G and I that makes us not get along. I truly like Linksys' flood the market" router and find it to be a great device when it works. I usually burn through one every 6-8 months and have come to accept that as a cost of doing business with the internet. Recently, I lost another one and decided that I would move up the scale to the WRT-610n, a dual-radio N-class monster with all kinds of bells and whistles. In the back of my mind I was concerned, but I figured even if this much pricier monster failed, I would just go back to regularly buying WRT-54G's again.
I priced out the 610n on Amazon and found that it was $144.99. I was ready to pull the trigger on it, but I really wanted to get it in person so on Thursday night, my wife and I headed down to Best Buy. I was expecting to pay a few bucks more, but I was totally not prepared for how much more Best Buy was charging.
No, I'm not kidding. On Thursday, they were charging $199.99.
