Amazon Echo Won’t Connect to Wi-Fi





The Amazon Echo is an amazing, compact device with thousands of different uses. But if you have a new one that is not connected to Wi-Fi, or if your Echo simply stops connecting to Wi-Fi, it suddenly becomes effectively useless. Without a working internet connection, Amazon Echo will not speak, process commands, or stream media for you. Frequently, the solution to Amazon Echo issues is to be found in troubleshooting and resolving Internet connectivity problems, not problems with the Amazon Echo itself.



Setting Up a Brand New Echo



If you’ve just purchased or received a new Echo, the first thing you’ll want to do is hook it up to your Wi-Fi connection so you can start enjoying it. Amazon Echo completely relies on the Internet to work properly.



Before you get started, make sure your Echo is plugged in. It may not be fully charged, and you do not want it to die during the setup process. Wait until the light ring on the top of the Echo turns orange before proceeding. While the issue of whether your Echo is plugged into power may seem like a trivial issue, many technical issues can be traced to the device not plugged in. Many times something appears plugged in but the connection’s not pushed in far enough to work. Confirming that the device is fully connected to a power source is near the top of the troubleshooting list for many technical problems.




    Open the Alexa application on your smartphone or tablet to connect your Echo to your wireless network. In the Home screen of the Alexa app, tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left-hand corner. Then, tap “Settings.” Next, tap on “Set up a new device” under “Alexa devices.” Choose the Echo device you’re connecting to Wi-Fi: Echo, Tap or Dot. Then, you’ll choose your language and tap the blue “Continue” button. On the next screen, you’ll do the setup for your Echo device and click the blue “Connect to Wi-Fi” button. Your Echo will tell you when it’s ready, and you will also see an orange ring of light around the top of it. If your Echo light does not change to orange after a little while, press and hold the “Action” button (the dot) on the Echo for a few seconds. Release it when the light changes to orange, then tap “Continue” in your app. Choose the desired Wi-Fi network to connect your Echo to. Then, enter your password for that network. Your Amazon Echo should now connect to your Wi-Fi network and audibly let you know when the connection is successful.



If the connection is unsuccessful, make sure that you have entered your password correctly. Because the password is hidden, it is easy to mistype one of the characters. Simply try reconnecting and re-entering your password before you try any of the troubleshooting tips below.



In addition, if you’ve got more than one wireless network connection, then try connecting to another one if attempts are still unsuccessful to the initial Wi-Fi connection.



Orange Ring of Light Tells you that the Echo can’t connect to the Internet



If you see an orange ring of light around the top of your Amazon Echo at any time after you have performed the initial setup, it’s trying to tell you something: It’s not connected to the Internet. Even if you’re Echo’s connected to WiFi, that doesn’t mean that the connection between your Cable or DSL modem and the Internet is working.. The Echo will attempt to reconnect with your Wi-Fi and your WiFI will try to reconnect with the Internet, but it may be unsuccessful.



To regain the Wi-Fi connection or between your Amazon Echo and your internet, you’ll need to re-establish a connection. What could have caused or create such issues with the Amazon Echo and Wireless connections? Below, we’ll look at the possible problems, as well as the easy ways for you to fix them.



Possible Fixes for Echo Connection Problems



If your Echo is not connected to the internet, follow these steps in order until it has reconnected.



Check to make sure your router is plugged in and connected to the Internet. Can you connect to Wi-Fi and access the Internet from another device? If not, the problem lies with either your router or your modem. Unplug both devices, wait 15 seconds, then plug them back in. If that does not work, try the same thing with the Echo. Turn it completely off using the power button, wait 15 seconds, then turn it back on. Wait a minute to see if it automatically reconnects to the internet. Still no connection? Don’t get frustrated – there are plenty more options to try. You may have saved your wireless password to your Amazon account when you first set up your Echo. If you recently changed your Wi-Fi password, the Echo will be unable to connect. Just open your Echo app, update the password, and it should reconnect automatically. If you are using a dual-band modem, then you may have two Wi-Fi networks set up. The two frequencies are optimized for different uses. The 5GHz frequency offers a more stable connection, while the 2.4GHz frequency is better for devices located further away. Try switching to the other network to see if the Echo will connect. Still nothing? Try repositioning your Echo. First, get it away from any wireless devices that could interfere with its signal. Then, move it higher, such as on top of a piece of furniture, to avoid interference. Finally, it could be that the Echo is too far from the wireless router, or in a part of your house where the signal is not especially strong. Try moving the Echo to a better location, such as right next to your wireless router. (Tip: Alternatively, you could get a wireless extender to expand your router’s range.)



When all else fails, you can reset your Amazon Echo to its factory settings. The process is different for the first - and second-generation Echos.



For the first-generation Echo:



Using a thin item, such as a paperclip, to press and hold the reset button located in the bottom of the device. The light ring on top of the Echo will turn orange, then blue. Release the button, and the light will turn off, then orange. Now, follow the process outlined above to set up your Wi-Fi connection from scratch.



For the second-generation Echo:



Press and hold the devices “Volume Down” and “Microphone Off” buttons. The light will turn orange for about 20 seconds, then turn blue. Release the button, and the light will turn off, then orange. Now, follow the process outlined above to set up your Wi-Fi connection from scratch.

So you've unboxed your shiny new Amazon Echo or other Alexa-enabled device and plugged it in. Now what?



The first thing you'll need to do is get your device online by connecting it to your Wi-Fi network. Before doing so you'll need to have your Wi-Fi network's name and password handy. Next, follow these steps and you'll be talking to Alexa in no time!



Connecting Your Alexa Device to Wi-Fi for the First Time



You should have already downloaded and installed the Alexa app by now. If not, please do so via the App Store for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch devices and Google Play for Android.



If this is your first Alexa-enabled device, you may not need to take steps 2-4 below. Instead, you will be prompted to begin setup once the app has been launched.



Enter your Amazon account credentials and press Sign In.



If prompted, tap the Get Started button.



Select the name associated with your Amazon account from the list provided, or choose I'm someone else and enter the correct name.



You now might be asked to give Amazon permission to access your Contacts and Notifications. This is not necessary to connect your device to Wi-Fi, so select either Later or Allow depending on your individual preference.





Tap on the Alexa Menu button, represented by three horizontal lines and located in the upper left-hand corner. When the drop-down menu appears, select the Settings option.



Tap the Add New Device button.



Choose the appropriate device type from the list (i. e., Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, Tap).





Choose the specific model you want to set up (in this example, we're choosing Echo Dot, 2nd Generation).



Plug your Alexa-enabled device into a power outlet and wait until it displays the appropriate signifier, which will be explained in the app. If your device is already plugged in, you may have to press and hold its Action button. For example, if you're setting up an Amazon Echo the light ring on the top of the device should turn orange. Once you've determined that your device is ready, select the Continue button.





Depending on your device, the app may now ask you to connect to it via your smartphone's wireless settings. To do so, follow the on-screen instructions to connect through Wi-Fi to a custom-named Amazon network (i. e., Amazon-75). As soon as your phone has been successfully connected to your device you will hear a confirmation message, and the app will automatically move on to the next screen.





A Connected to [device name] confirmation message may now be displayed. If so, tap Continue.



A list of available Wi-Fi networks will now be shown within the app itself. Select the network that you wish to pair with your Alexa-enabled device and enter a password if prompted.



The app screen may now read Preparing Your [device name], accompanied by a progress bar.



If the Wi-Fi connection is successfully established you should now see a message stating Your [device name] is now online.





Connecting Your Alexa Device to a New Wi-Fi Network



If you have an Alexa device that had already been set up in the past but now needs to be connected to a new Wi-Fi network or an existing network with a changed password, follow these steps.



Tap the menu icon, then the Settings option.



Tap Device Settings, then choose the device you want to change the Wi-Fi network for.





Tap Change, next to Wi-Fi Network.



The setup is now the same as above, starting at Step 10.





Troubleshooting Tips





If you've carefully followed the above instructions and still can't seem to connect your Alexa-enabled device to your Wi-Fi network then you may want to consider trying some of these tips.



    Try restarting your modem and router. Try restarting your Alexa-enabled device. Try resetting your Alexa-enabled device to factory settings. Make sure that your Wi-Fi password is correct. You can confirm this by trying to connect​ with another device using the same password. Try updating the firmware on your modem and/or router. Move your Alexa-enabled device closer to your wireless router. Move your Alexa-enabled device away from possible sources of signal interference, such as baby monitors or other wireless electronics.


If you're still unable to connect, you may want to contact the device manufacturer and/or your internet service provider.

    I’m assuming that your wi-fi actually works.

    My wifi connection for other things in the house work.

    If you have something else sending out a wifi signal next to the Amazon Echo, it can interfere with its signal, while bad enough interference will kill it.

    I know that if it has interference, it will pause the music every ten seconds or so.

    That could happen, and then when it keeps losing connection to the wifi, the cloud service may suspend the playing altogether.

    I don’t think it can connect to the wifi at all.

    It has a light ring to indicate its status. An orange light spinning means it is connecting to the wifi network.

    And will continue to do it if it can’t connect.

    No, solid orange means it can't connect. If it gives you an alternating violet light, then it can’t connect because of a problem with the wifi set up.

    It worked before.

    If you reset the wifi network password, you need to update the password in the profile for the Amazon Echo.

    It works for everything else.

    You can still open the alexa app, go to settings, pick update wi-fi to check the password and settings. And if necessary, try a different wifi device to the account.

    You’d do that using the set up a new device option.

    If you connect to another wifi router you just now set up, clicking action should turn the light ring orange as the mobile device connects, and then it could say connect the device including password.

    Sometimes it doesn’t see the device or sees the neighbor’s device at all, so then you have to select add a network.

    Add a network is more likely needed if it has a hidden network, but if you have devices interfering with each other and turn off the interfering one, tell it to rescan instead.

    I wonder if I need to try a totally different network.

    An Amazon echo can be connected to a public network, like school or hotel.

    You know it will look weird if I take this to the local coffee shop.

    Just carry it into another room and try to reconnect. If you’re lucky, the wireless router for the gaming console was interfering with its connection to the wifi.

    Or I need to move the Amazon echo higher up on the bandwidth allocation so that I don’t lose connection for it because someone else is streaming their latest online gaming session.

    If it can connect, you’ll see a confirmation message of that in the Alexa app.

    What do you think of a wifi hotspot to solve the problem?

    First, the Echo needs at least update 3389.

    That’s hopefully not an issue with a new one.

    You have to have the app for Alexa on a device that can handle wifi hotspots, and your cell phone plan has to support wifi hotspots.

    The set up for that is usually similar with going to settings, search for wifi hotspot, put in the network name and password for the hotspot.

    Once you’ve done that through the app on the mobile device, then you go to settings, pick the echo, update wifi, then push the action button on the Echo. It should then show a list of wifi networks the Echo can use in the app.

    And if that fails, I either contact their tech support or buy another Echo.

    They’ll be happy to sell you another router too. Наука

I have alexa echo plus i try all the ways and never see the orange light





I spent hours trying to get my Alexa to work but after reading, watching many videos I even called the Amazon help desk and had a real difficult time understanding the guy. I gave up and decided it was junk. I had to charge my phone and with a half dozen cables I started sorting them out and after charging my phone I used the same cable and charger to give Alexa one more shot. Alexa came on. I decided to try every charger on Alexa and soon found out only one charger worked so before you go nuts make sure you use the correct charger for Alexa.





Forget the network then put the network back on your phone and hold the dot for 6 seconds go back into setup mode and set her up that's how I fixed her





I'll wait for the rumored Amazon/Fleshlight merger.
