Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater [Review]

Although it is not technically a face primer or a fixer, I didn’t have an appropriate category for this Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs, and Rosewater. I realized, since I have put L’Occitane’s Perfecting Face Mist (review here!) in that category, I might as well put this one. I’ll keep this review short and sweet because all that matters when it comes to facial sprays is whether they work or nah.

Spoiler alert: I love this product and I don’t know why I didn’t review it earlier!

This product has been around for a few years with minimal changes in the design of the bottle and a slight modification of ingredients. So, if you remember it as a slightly different product, you are not crazy. Still, I believe that the changes were way too subtle to have a drastic impact on your opinion on this facial spray.

If you want to learn more about Mario Badescu brand, check out their official website here. They have quite a selection of different regimes for acne-prone, anti-aging, dull, oily, dry, sensitive skin and every other combination imaginable so it’s worth checking out.

Before you continue reading my review, you can check out what Mario Badescu has to say about this product on their official site here.

To be honest, the packaging is as basic as it gets. The whole Mario Badescu line has a signature aesthetics that verges on the boring side (just my opinion, sorry). I’m guessing they tried to make their products look like they are straight out of a pharmacy. If you’ve read my reviews before, you know that I’m a sucker for cutesy packaging, but I realize that some people prefer simplicity and there is nothing wrong with that. All the necessary information is listed on the sticker (I’ll investigate ingredients in the next section) and I haven’t got much to complain about.

However, I do prefer my spray products to come in a glass bottle. I try to avoid plastic when I can due to the fact that it can affect the ingredients inside in a negative way. Also, the spray nozzle has a weird spraying style that ranges from superfine mist to bigger drops. You’ll see that later because I tried to capture it in a video. The first time I sprayed it on my face, I literally sprayed myself right in the eye. I couldn’t repeat that even if I tried.

Let’s start with the list of ingredients so that we can really comment the formula:

Aqua (Water, Eau), Propylene Glycol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Rosa Canina Extract, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Leaf Extract, Fucus Vesiculosus Extract, Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20,Parfum (Fragrance), Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Citronellol, Geraniol, CI 17200 (Red 33), CI 42090 (Blue 1)

You can skip this whole section if you are not interested in the detailed analysis of the ingredients.

Formula is, as usual, water-based and that ingredient does not need further explanation.

Propylene Glycol Found in thousands of cosmetic products as well as a large number of processed foods products. I’ve read a few claims saying that this is a dangerous ingredient, but I don’t personally fear this ingredient. I believe we breathe, ingest and wear much worse things and that this should be of no concern. This ingredient serves as a humectant which means it attracts moisture and serves as a preservative due to its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. It is biodegradable and will dissolve in your body within two days leaving no traces. I see no issues with it unless your skin is sensitive or allergic to it.

Then there are many natural plant-derived ingredients such as Aloe vera (skin healing and anti-inflammatory properties), Rose hip (hydrating and antioxidant properties), Thyme (antibacterial, antifungal and acne controlling properties), Bladderwrack (again anti-inflammatory and healing properties), and Gardenia (antioxidant and a hydrating ingredient). Caprylyl Glycol Skin and hair conditioning agent with antimicrobial activity.

Hexylene Glycol Skin conditioning ingredient also used to thin out the product. May irritate skin for some, but it is not necessarily a bad ingredient. Polysorbate 20 Again a thinning agent, but this one raises more concerns simply because of a possible byproduct. It is 1,4-dioxane, a known cancerogenic ingredient. So an actual polysorbate 20 is not a cause for concern. It is, however, up to you whether you will consider the possible traces of 1,4-dioxane a deal breaker. Phenoxyethanol A preservative that is a safer alternative to parabens, shouldn’t be an issue (except for a chance of irritation for some) in small quantities like this one. Sodium Chloride It is just a fancy name for table salt. No hidden dangers there. Citronellol Natural scent derived from rose, geranium and some citruses (all present in this spray). It has slight antimicrobial and antifungal properties but is known to irritate some people (Usually those who don’t tolerate fragrances in general). Geraniol Natural scent found in rose and geranium oil. It may cause sensitivity, but since it is on the bottom of the ingredient list I don’t think it will be an issue for many of you.

What I don’t like is the added fragrance and coloring. While it does make the spray look more pretty and vibrant in color and it does have a heavenly scent – I do not consider it a pro when it comes to my skincare regime. I want my skincare to be as natural as possible. Since the brand Mario Badescu has some pretty basic packaging and doesn’t seem too concerned about the visual part I did not expect them to use dyes for their facial sprays.

The good news is that it still didn’t irritate my skin or made me break out, but I still find it an unnecessary ingredient and I had to deduct a grade for this section.

When it comes to effects, it depends on the use of this spray because it has so many purposes. You can use it to tone your skin and refresh it any part of your day. Like I said, it didn’t cause any irritation for me, but it actually soothes my skin. I guess it is due to the aloe vera, I’ve always loved it in my cosmetic products. That’s why I find myself randomly spraying this on my face because it just sits on my vanity table to remind me I should use it as often as I can. Yes, I’ll run out of it pretty soon if I continue using it, but oh well!

I also did use it on my hair, it won’t miraculously repair your hair, but it did make it smell really good and made it look less damaged. I won’t say it actually is less damaged, but you should probably stick to using hair oils if you have really dry hair like me. Oily hair will probably benefit from this spray the most because it won’t weigh it down.

They mention on the bottle that you could use it to set your makeup, but I would only suggest that if you have no other appropriate setting sprays. I say that so you don’t expect from this spray to prolong the wear of your makeup. It won’t ruin your makeup, I’ll give it that, but it won’t prolong it. I use it after a setting powder to give a healthy look to my face. I hate looking like I’ve been sprinkled with flour. Since it is lightweight, it won’t additionally cake your face, but actually, make it look more natural and fresh. Your makeup will look more blended in with your face and who would mind that.

It absorbs really quickly for the amount of spray I put on my face (yeah, I kinda overdo it), but my skin seems to love it. It looks plump, hydrated and less red after I use this spray.

There are a few different sizes of this product so you can get the one that suits you the most. Of course, the prices vary depending on the size, but the rule of the thumb is that it costs around $7 for 4 fl. oz. which is a bargain for a product as awesome as this one. The whole beauty community buzzes about this product for quite a while so I believe it is worth giving it a shot.
