Learn to Style Your Bootstrap Tables

Whenever people need to have a bunch of exact data outputted clearly, they usually choose visual displays of data, such as graphs, charts, or tables. The thing is, they are also considered as illustrations, so you have to be aware of styling, too.

In this tutorial, we will introduce you to various CSS classes used to create Bootstrap table styles. Using them, you will be able to adapt it to the overall design of your page better. Formatting your table properly will make it not only more eye-pleasing but also quicker to access and use.

As each new CSS class is presented, a code example will be provided: feel free to play around with it, see the difference every step makes, and master styling Bootstrap tables in no time.

Bootstrap Table: Main Tips

With the introduction of Bootstrap 4, some changes to how tables are styled have appeared. Additional >

You might choose not to use any Bootstrap table styles, and yet the framework will add some styling to your table itself. This will happen if you use the simple .table class. Bootstrap 4 will add some padding and changes the font. To reduce the padding size by half, you can use the .table-sm class.

Look at the code example below. The simple .table class is applied, and yet you can see some basic features of Bootstrap table styles: padding, align, and borders are all chosen for a simple, clean look:

Bootstrap 4 also offers an option of creating a bordered table using the .table-bordered class. See the code example below: you will notice the only difference it has compared to the one we discussed before is the declared CSS class. And yet the look of the table has changed, as it now has borders.

This look might be better if your table is surrounded by text, and you need the borders to be clearly defined:

Hover effect

Using Bootstrap 4, you also have an option of adding a hover effect on the table using the .Table-hover class. This means a particular row is highlighted when the user's cursor is hovering on it, creating a kind of Bootstrap responsive table.

This feature is especially useful when you have large tables with tons of data, and matching the first column with say, the twelfth, in just one glance is barely possible:

If you want the rows to be clearly divided from each other, but don't want the dynamics of the hover effect, you can make a striped table. This means each second line will be in a bit of a different shade than others, making it easier to read the data. To create a striped table in Bootstrap 4, you should use .table-striped class:

A table has to not only provide information but also look good on the page. If you have a website that has a somewhat dark color scheme, the standard white table can look completely out of place. Luckily, Bootstrap 4 also offers an option of a dark-colored table using the .table-dark class. See how it works in the example.

You can see the color chosen here is #212529 (very dark blue, almost black), but you can choose any other - try changing the color codes in the code editor and play around:

Using Multiple >

As you were going through the list, you might have thought that while some of these features are nice, they are not enough to make an impression. Well, in that case, Bootstrap 4 allows you to combine table style classes.

Look at the example below. You can see both. table-dark and. table-striped are applied, making the table both dark and striped:

Contextual Colors

Bootstrap 4 allows use contextual color classes on whole tables or individual rows as well by applying classes such as .table-primary and others.

Review the example we have below. A different color code is defined before every row: for example, you can see "background-color: #b8daff in front of the first one. This particular code is light blue, and the first row of our table becomes colored:

Modifying Headers

Among other classes, Bootstrap 4 has a few header-oriented ones. Let's review these in closer detail.

.thread-dark class gives a table header a black background. It might be useful if your website design is made of contrasting colors, or simply if you wish to accent some table more than you usually would:

.thread-light gives a light gray background to the table header. This look is more subtle, but also helps to mark a clear distinction between the header and data rows:

Responsive Tables

There also are certain classes which determine at what screen size a table should get a scroll bar.

The most simple way to create a responsive table Bootstrap offers is by assigning the .table-responsive class on a

This makes the table display a horizontal scrollbar if the device it is being viewed on has a screen with a width under 992px.

Here's a list of responsive table Bootstrap classes you can use for more specific screen sizes:

>Making an entrance has never been easier with these foyer designs

There are some hallway furniture pieces which are just elegant by nature and there’s nothing quite so elegant as a round entryway table. It inspires thoughts of grand manors, pretty arrangements and luxury hotel lobbies. Start with a special piece and let the best in the business inspire your next entryway design. (Bonus: most dining tables are perfectly suitable as entryway tables.)

1. Contemporary Elegance

Louise Bradley’s signature style comprises a layered, cool neutral palette, formal styling of free-form objets and a sense of quiet grandeur and this hallway combines all three with finesse. The black high-gloss hallway table – which sits ahead of a hallway sofa arrangement – is decorated with reflective silver banding, providing a simple but interesting twist on a timeless design. Couples of diaphanous glass vases and bronze bowls have enough presence to fill the table in a simply elegant way but still feel harmonious with the overall design in both colour and texture.

2. Classical Appeal

This Thomas Pheasant entryway is one of a lucky ten which get to enjoy his limited edition, mahogany and cast bronze centre table with ivory marble top.

The special design – placed front and centre in a grand Washington DC residence – recalls a classical spirit. A tripod radial base characterises its silhouette and a dish-like finial adds interest and references ancient decorative arts.

Pheasant accessorises the piece simply with shallow golden boxes, a tall glass vase of tendril blossoms and textured ceramic vase.

3. Neutral Harmony

A calming space to come home to, the entryway for Helen Green’s Knightsbridge penthouse project is evidence that neutrals never go out of style. The space makes use of a neutral cream-based palette of harmonious tones and accents its gold-inlaid, travertine-topped entryway table with a collection of Willer vases for understated styling. Against a backdrop of subtly textured wallpaper, the designers hung a series of vibrant Andy Warhol ‘Marilyn’ prints to add a layer of interest.

4. Fresh Take

Work a style contrast in your entryway like this Heather Hilliard space by using a blank canvas, different furniture styles and edgy hallway lighting.

The fresh and airy design features a hand-hammered steel Bernhardt ‘Hallam’ table with a glossy top in Benjamin Moore blue and topped with beautiful hallway accessories including a shallow glass bowl in a coordinating blue hue, a stack of coffee table books and an abstract sculpture.

A bronze ‘Lunar’ pendant with satin brass finish by Plug Lighting hangs overhead and a unique rope hallway chair by Christian Astuguevielle brings a nautical softness to the look.

5. Timeless Country

Designed for an existing client who relocated to the USA, this grand Connecticut family house by Taylor Howes retains a sense of the quintessential English country manor, led, in no small part, by its double-height entryway and sweeping double staircase. The pedestal table is simply styled on a hallway rug with a vase of pink blossoms and flanked with tall ceramic urns and upholstered fauteuils.

6. Iconic Additions

Some designs are just instantly recognisable and the Ado Chale masterpiece in Helen Green Design’s Belgravia lateral apartment project is one such. It transforms the sometime-ancillary room into a place to stop and take in – a fine introduction to any home. The bronze focal point – with trademark mosaicesque top and monolithic ball addition – works a singular floral arrangement, letting the area remain simple enough to exude a gallery-like vibe. Its neighbours (a pendant chandelier and gestural hallway wall art) are equally impressive.

7. Heaven’s Welcome

Anthony Michael’s “urban farmhouse” take on chic entryway style speaks of nothing but freshness and light. Its uplifting white palette gives the custom pedestal table the attention, creating a focal feature by day.

Two elegant silver candlesticks reference the space’s modern elegance (seen in the custom-designed fumed oak staircase and honed cream Marfil marble flooring) and an ivory hold-all box answers all hallway storage needs for by-the-door essentials – keys, coins, lipstick.

By night (or indeed during a weekend get together with friends and family), the entryway doubles as an impressive additional dining area via the table’s unique height-adjustable ability. We can just imagine the candles of the rusticated Visual Comfort chandelier glowing above head.

8. Modern Luxe

An enthusiast of a distinguished entryway, Helen Green Design channels Knightsbridge masculinity in this apartment. Against a backdrop of the studio’s Gramercy wallpaper (a luxe Mondrianesque grid) from its first collection stands a high-gloss warm walnut cross-base entryway table, trimmed in brass. Its warm palette and refined finish is contrasted with mottled verdigris vessels for a thoroughly minimalist styling job. Echoing the grid of the wallpaper, a glass and brass chandelier recalls Pierre Vandel design and the 1970s lucite trend.

9. Paris Meets New York

In this New York Jean-Louis Deniot project, the entryway look is brilliantly 5th Avenue with a hint of Parisian chic.

Perfectly centred in the blue Savoy and white Tassos marble floored space, underneath a Louis XVI-period carved gilt wood lantern sourced in Paris, the marble-topped table is loaded with a collection of objet, hallway mirrors, sculptures and vases which represent both cities’ influential art world.

A cloudy Couleurs Privées wallpaper clads the walls which culminate in bronze-trimmed ebony walnut doors which lead on to the bedroom quarters.

10. Quirky Update

Take a leaf out of Heather Hilliard’s book and reimagine a traditional space with an entryway table with an eye catching design. The Luna Round Dining Table by Hélène Aumont is just the right amount of quirky, just the right amount of convention to work in the stairwell of this elegantly appointed Bay Area home. Piled high with art tomes (we approve the selection), the design recalls a conventional pedestal table silhouette, updated by a unique base make up of stacked concentric disks. An angular Bec Brittain ‘Shy’ LED pendant and brass trays finishes the look.

Why Restaurant Table Tops Made of Wood Last Longer

Creating ambiance is vital to your restaurant’s success. Hopefully, you know that it doesn’t make good financial sense to keep replacing cheap tables. Repairing poor quality countertops wastes money and shuts down your kitchen and bar every time you need to maintain them. When you start with high-quality wood restaurant table tops, you actually save money.

Designing or Redecorating Your Restaurant with Wood

There are many design options available when you choose hardwood surfaces for your restaurant. You can choose reclaimed wood for authentic bar and pub tables. You can also go with new hardwood for your restaurant table tops for a sleek, modern look. Our design team will work with you to create stylish custom wood furnishings for your business.

Real wood restaurant table tops immediately impress your customers and set your business apart from others. No one likes to eat at a cheap table with stains and damaged edges, especially if it’s for a special occasion.

Wood is an investment in your restaurant that stands the test of time. It never goes out of style, and it increases the value of your business.

Wood Restaurant Table Tops

Is wood suitable for a restaurant with heavy traffic? Will my staff have to spend extra time cleaning wood tables? How can I keep my wood restaurant tables looking good?

Antique wood pub tables—and even bars—are still in existence and still serviceable. We like to use the word “resilient” to describe wood furnishings, especially in dining and kitchen areas. We even use salvaged wood (also called reclaimed wood) to build new kitchen surfaces. It’s strong enough to withstand constant daily use.

We use a waterproof finish on wood restaurant tables. While it doesn’t prevent water rings, it does protect the wood from the average spill. Wiping down the table and drying it thoroughly after each customer will reduce the chance of water rings. Since chemical kitchen cleaners aren’t appropriate for wood, using soap and water actually saves time and money.

Wood ages well, generally developing a patina over time. Dings and scratches give it character, but actual damage like chips or cut marks can usually be sanded out and refinished. A high-quality hardwood table top with distinct age marks is appealing and makes your customers feel relaxed.

Types of Wood for Restaurant Tables and Bars

Wood species used for restaurant tables should be hard and shock-resistant. An exceptionally strong hardwood doesn’t have to be dark. We’ve used light ash-brown and golden hickory for restaurant tables and bar tops. Hickory is a great choice for a bar because it’s unlikely to be damaged by heavy barware.

Walnut is stiff and heavy. It ranges in color from amber to chocolate brown. We recommend walnut if you want a substantial hardwood that’s available in neutral shades.

Reclaimed pine and oak are classic choices for restaurant tables and bars. They’re both durable and hard. If you’re looking for dark woods to give your old-fashioned restaurant or pub authenticity, we recommend reclaimed oak and pine.

Wood Countertops in Your Restaurant’s Kitchen

Wood commercial kitchen countertops increase your kitchen staff’s efficiency. A long butcher block island gives your cook staff more room to work and move. This results in quicker meal preparation, fewer accidents and less stress in the kitchen.

You can see examples of our restaurant table tops on our site. Working with Maryland Wood Countertops ensures your project will be unique and designed to your specifications. Call us at 443-840-7373 to schedule a consultation.
