7 Benefits of Dish-Style Hummingbird Feeders with Examples
Why wouldn’t you want to attract more hummingbirds with less effort?
The secret is a dish-style hummingbird feeder. Unlike pretty bottle feeders, which are a little more involved and use a vacuum-type of suction to prevent the nectar from leaking, fresh nectar sits in the covered dish until the hummingbirds are ready to eat. It’s similar to having your table reserved at your favorite restaurant.

What exactly is a dish feeder?
Dish feeders are made specifically for hummingbirds. Since they look like a saucer, it’s best described as a covered dish with built-in feeding ports.

Why would you use a dish feeder?
These types of feeders are convenient to clean, among other reasons. (You’ll read about these throughout this article.) You can use one in addition to your existing feeders, especially if you have a territorial hummingbird hanging around. Or–since hummingbirds are migrating right now–you can store your other hummingbird feeders and simply leave out a dish feeder.
Dish feeders are suitable for serving less nectar at a time, which is an excellent way to ensure the nectar stays fresh for every hummingbird who comes along. And you may well see some stragglers come your way, as migration continues to wind down.
You can mount dish feeders two ways:

You’ll know when you buy a window hummingbird feeder because it comes with strong suction cups to secure it to the glass for a beautiful view of your birds.
Dish feeders are often lightweight with easy to clean parts and are popular because they rarely leak. The nectar simply sits inside the protected feeding area, ready whenever the hummingbirds are hungry.
While dish hummingbird feeders hold less nectar than other feeders, it all works out perfectly. When the weather’s hot, you can refill the feeder more often and waste less nectar.
Inside the dish, the nectar stays fresh and free of debris, helping you love your birds with a little extra TLC.
How will hummingbirds see the feeders?
Hummingbirds have a clear association in their mind with the color red and food. This comes from the tubular flowers they eat nectar from in nature, which are often red or a similar shade.

It may take them a while, but hummingbirds are on the lookout for anything red because it means there’s food nearby. They’ll even eat at a nectar feeder that’s totally clear, except for small red feeding ports. They know food when they see it.
How many hummingbirds will be able to eat?
This feeder has six feeding ports and a wraparound perch for more hummingbirds.
Depending on how many feeding ports your dish feeder has you can accommodate three or more hummingbirds at a single feeder. In the photo above, you can see four hummingbirds eating at the HummZinger with room for more.
Dish-styles with a wraparound perch tend to be more convenient for bird watchers who attract more hummingbirds. This allows a charm to eat at once.

But will my hummingbirds come back?
Yes, hummingbirds are creatures of habit and will return to a reliable food source. Since you serve only fresh nectar to your birds and you replace it every few days, they have reason to trust you.
Eating at your house, now that they’ve learned to trust the food available there, means they’re not taking any risk with their health by eating from a neglected or moldy feeder. As long as you’re taking care of the hummingbirds, they’ll take care of you by coming back to say “hi” and brighten your day.
Why should I get a dish hummingbird feeder?
We want to be clear, we’re not asking you to switch from bottle feeders to dish feeders. When you live directly in the path of a hummingbird hotspot and you constantly lose track of how many hummingbirds are eating at your feeders, it makes a lot more sense to have a large nectar feeder.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION (3.6/5) Lusmo automatic pet feeder allows you to feed your cat up to 3 times a day with fully customizable meal times and portions according to your cat’s needs, example, big breakfast, and small dinner. Meal portions can be programmed from a minimum of 1/16 cup (0.5 Oz) up to 1 cup at a time. Portion increments are in 1/16 cup.
Once you program the 3 meals for a 24-hour period, this schedule will automatically repeat daily so you don’t have to worry about reprogramming. The convenient location of LCD panel on top of the unit makes it easy to program because you don’t have to squat too low to read and push the buttons. Also, the large and clear LCD panel is easy to read and the programming is simple with 3 buttons.
With Lusmo you can trigger a feed manually at any time by pushing a button, which is excellent if you want to feed your cat snacks in between meals or using this function to reward your pet.
The hopper capacity is about 2.2 lbs. dry food. On average the feeder dispenses up 10 days for an adult indoor cat. This number will vary a little depending on the kibble shape, size and how much your cat eats. The unit’s top cover will be locked when you push back the cute ear-shaped handle and prevents your cat’s mischief.

HOW IT WORKS
Lusmo Control Panel
Lusmo’s dispensing system consists of a rotating hard piece of plastic on the bottom of the hopper which dispenses the food from the chambers into the food dish. The hopper is detachable cassette-type and the bowl is also removable.
The unit comes with a preset schedule of 3 meals a day. These meals can be programmed individually, at times you choose, according to your cat needs so you don’t have to choose preset meal times.
When programming the unit, the settings have a range of feeding portions from F00 to F16, where F00 represents no feeding and this is used when you want to jump one meal and feed your cat 2 times a day, for example. The minimum amount of food you can program is 1/16 cup which is equal to F01. The maximum is 1 cup being equal to F16. The unit dispenses in 1/16 cup increments.

Notes: The accuracy of portions will depend on the type of kibble (standard deviation is ± 1.65g. or 0.06 Oz.). Lusmo does not work with kibble longer than 0.6” because the system may jam and stop working.

Lusmo suitable for cats and small dogsLusmo features a ON-OFF power switch that you can use if you want to stop the feeder from operating. The feeder will retain the programming when turned OFF.
The unit runs only on alkaline batteries and if you use rechargeable batteries the feeder won’t operate. The LCD panel will display a low battery indicator when time to replace them.

PROS

CONS
- It can’t be programmed to dispense more than 3 meals a day If you want to dispense less than 3 meals a day, you still need to program the 3 meals. It does not work with all types of kibble The feeder is not dishwasher safe It works only with batteries, no backup power system Noisy when cats try to steal food poking the protective guard on the chute. Battery indicator is not easy to visualize Some customers state that batteries don’t last up to 6 months with this feeder. Battery prongs need some bending for the batteries to work.
TIPS
- Don’t place the feeder in areas subject to having contact with water, such as the bathroom or kitchen. As Lusmo’s accuracy depends on the kibble size and shape, once you program the portions make sure to measure the food actually fed automatically to confirm the amount. The prongs that hold the batteries may need to be bent up or down to have proper battery conduction.
CONCLUSION
Lusmo automatic pet feeder has been sold in Japan for quite some time and now has been introduced to the US market. The unit, in general, is well designed and responds to basic programming to feed your pet. The feeder lacks some flexibility when it comes to the amount of meals per day, limiting the schedule to only 3 meals per day. The unit’s feeding schedule is based on repeating the one-day program so you can’t program for different days of the week.
The feeder has a good protective mechanism when it comes to food-obsessed cats. The cover is lockable and the chute is protected by a “mischief guard” which is a piece of folding plastic you insert in the chute to protect the food from those mischievous paws. For all these reasons and pros and cons of the unit,

My dogs kibble is triangular shaped and is 1/2 inch in size. Will it be able to dispense?

Hi lorie, the kibble size you feed your dog is within the size the manufacturer recommends which is smaller than 0.6″ diameter, however using triangular shaped kibble with this feeder I believe could cause the mechanism of Lusmo to jam since it’s a rotating internal plastic that moves the kibble to the chambers inside.
