HP TouchPad Accessories Begin to Arrive at Retail

The Griffin Screen Protector was packed with a screen cleaning cloth and priced at $16.88. In addition to the TouchPad version, similar matte-finish Griffin screen protectors were also available for the RIM Playbook and several Android tablets. No other TouchPad accessories were on display, HP-branded or otherwise.

Veer Drops $100 off Full Retail, Now Free with Contract

Several years ago, much hoopla was made when Palm's Centro hit "free" status after nearly a year after hitting the market. But the new HP Veer 4G has already hit that price at several retailers within days of its initial availability. Amazon Wireless and Best Buy Mobile are now selling the Veer in both color choices with the usual 2yr contract for free, though AT&T's price is still the same $99.99 as it was at launch.

More surprisingly, the Veer has seen a swift decrease in its full retail unsubsidized price. Amazon Wireless is now offering both colors of the Veer without a contract for $349 and free shipping, almost certainly a record drop for a brand-new GSM device. Best Buy and AT&T are all still selling the Veer at its original full retail price of $449, however.

Best Buy Preparing Stores for TouchPad

A recent trip to one Best Buy last weekend revealed the early stages of a more substantial HP presence. The first store I visited had only a small 2-device standalone HP display in the smartphone area of BB Mobile. A white Veer was powered on and usable while a non-functional black dummy Veer was positioned alongside it.

Wal-Mart Preparing Stores for TouchPad Arrival

With word that the TouchPads were appearing in Wal-Mart's internal inventory system and new displays being installed on the 6th, I visited two Wal-Mart stores in the Charlotte, NC area earlier this week to see if any additional evidence was on display. Both stores were in the process of carving out new tablet areas where e-readers and mp3 players were previously displayed. While an Apple iPad endcap dominated the department, signage for HP's 32Gb wi-fi Touchpad was already in place. Curiously, the $499 16Gb Touchpad is nowhere to be seen, a puzzling choice given the value-oriented nature of many of Wal-Mart's offerings and the popularity of the lower-priced iPad and Android tablet SKUs.

Discounted AT&T Veer 4G Available to WebOS Developers

This is a small but encouraging step that shows HP remains committed to getting the WebOS developer community the latest hardware for actual device testing. The standard Veer price from AT&T without subsidies or discounts is $449.99.

      Aceeca PDA32 News Updates

The company's Garnet handheld is about to become much more appealing with the announcement that the major task of implementing Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules to the device is completed. Aceeca is expecting to begin shipping limited quantities of wireless PDA32s later this month. As this is a very high priority for their team, expect further news on this subject soon.

HP TouchPad Goes on Sale July 1st

HP TouchPad will be available from U. S. retailers, commercial resellers and direct from HP with the option of either 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage for $499.99 and $599.99, respectively. Preorders in North America and Europe will begin June 19.

HP also announced it will be partnering with AT&T to introduce a connected version of HP TouchPad later this summer.

      HP Veer 4G Initial Impressions

My initial impression out of the box is that the Veer is impossibly tiny! I was expecting something along the lines of a reduced-size Pre but I was not expecting anything this Lilliputian! The Veer can hide completely under a credit card! It slips safely into a shirt pocket without a moment's hesitation. Without a doubt, this little gizmo is the best execution yet of Palm's "river pebble" theme as first seen at CES 2009 with the original Pre.

Read on for the full HP Veer first impressions piece.

HP Posts New Device Transition Gu > Posted Wednesday, May 04, 2011 11:11:48 AM PST by Kris Keilhack

The most relevant devices discussed in the guide is of course the just-announced Veer 4G, as it is the most similar to its predecessor devices from a hardware standpoint as well as from its development architecture since it runs the existing Mojo and PDK apps and has not been designed around the Enyo development library. Additional info found in this guide is confirmation from HP that the Veer will ship with WebOS 2.1 and will offer much-improved performance with its carryover Pixi-style screen size and resolution.

One interesting comment from the guide discuss the Veer's close ties to the Pixi as far as app compatibility and screen resolution--stating quite bluntly: "If you were worried about performance with Pixi, you won't need to be with Veer!"

HP Veer 4G Announced for AT&T

Somewhat surprisingly, the Veer will be an AT&T-exclusive device in the USA, something not seen in this country since the days of the Treo 680 in 2006 and Treo 750 in 2007. The device will also be offered in both black and white color schemes, as we discussed on Monday.

AT&T Veer Spotted in New Color

The diminutive device has reared its head in three official-looking promo shots, showcasing a white body with a contrasting black front bezel and buttons. It's unknown what WebOS version will power this device, as it's likely to ship with WebOS 2.1, but potentially 2.2 or even 2.3. The Veer also has the dubious distinction, as some have speculated it is possibly the final original device designed by Palm before the HP acquisition.

Palm Fares Poorly in Latest Smartphone Poll

In March of 2011, only 2% of those surveyed indicated that they had purchased a WebOS device, in no small part due to the platform's almost non-existence on domestic carriers. As of this writing, new WebOS smartphones are currently only available from Verizon (Pre 2) and AT&T (Pre Plus & Pixi Plus) in the USA, with neither carrier giving much of a promotional push to the devices.
