Amazon is making yet another change to their Prime memberships this month, but this change is not something customers and third-party sellers will be thrilled with.
The 20 percent discount on video game pre-orders that Amazon Prime users have grown accustomed to will officially end on Aug. 28, according to Amazon. com.
Instead, Prime members will receive $10 in Amazon store credit on pre-orders of “select titles.”
This will change the final discount on an average $60 video game from $12, or 20 percent, to $10. Although a measly two dollar difference may not seem significant to some, on a large scale this marginal decrease in discount dollars should allow Amazon’s video game profits to increase greatly if no downtick in purchases follows.
However, as the terms and conditions read, members will receive their store credit within 35 days of purchase and then will have 60 days to make a discounted purchase after the credit is activated.
The company has formatted the discount in this way to keep members buying new games every two or three months, but customers may be frustrated by the fact that they must use the discount on Amazon’s terms instead of their own.
Should a customer accidentally miss the 60 day window, the discount will be rendered useless and the consumer will not receive any benefit.
In July, CNET reported that Amazon was considering removing select titles from the 20 percent discount policy. Now, they’ve taken that thinking a step further and simply changed the discount wholesale, while also telling customers the discount will only be for select titles.
This could mean that games in extremely high demand could be without a discount under the new policy, which will likely anger customers while putting more money in Jeff Bezos’ already-bulging pockets.
Amazon is not the only company initiating this kind of change, as Best Buy’s competing Gamer’s Club Unlocked service halted their own 20 percent discount on game in late May, adopting a similar policy to the one Amazon will now use.
Amazon instituted the 20 percent discount policy in January of 2016 in order to compete with the the Gamer’s Club Unlocked service. Once Best Buy reduced their discount, Amazon saw it as a perfect opportunity to do the same.
In this way, this initial discount and subsequent change has likely been less about giving customers a good deal and more about making sure they do not switch their allegiance from Amazon to Best Buy.
Should Best Buy, Walmart, Target, or any other major competitor install a more heavily-discounted policy on video games, sellers and consumers should both expect Amazon to follow suit immediately.
Customers who have already pre-ordered games or plan on doing so in the near future will still be eligible for the 20 percent discount prior to Aug. 28.
Amazon Adding Twitch Ads?
While gamers may already be having a tough time coming to grips with the new pre-order policy, another Amazon announcement from this week informed gamers that the Amazon-owned Twitch and Twitch Prime (for Prime members) will no longer be ad-free.
This policy will fully take effect on Oct. 15 and will force members who wish to use Twitch without advertisements to pay $8.99 per month for ad-free viewing on Twitch-Turbo.
After hearing the news, well-known Twitch streamer Iateyourpie tweeted,
“This announcement is such a loss for all streamers. It’s not even about the ad revenue, more people are going to drop prime meaning less prime subs. Twitch trying to spin this as a win for the streamer is laughable.”
While some other Twitch Prime benefits including free PC games and monthly channel subscriptions are still available, this has been a horrible week for the relationship between gamers and Amazon.
“Twitch saying the changes to prime are to help put money back into the pockets of streamers, by changing a thing they said wouldn’t affect streamers income, is the laziest attempts at corporate double speak I’ve ever seen,” popular streamer Jesse Cox tweeted.
While a blog post from Twitch suggested that new changes should “strengthen and expand advertising opportunity so they can get more support from their viewers for doing what they love,” gamers clearly do not see it that way.
Does This New Policy Affect Third-Party Sellers?
While adding advertisements on twitch has virtually no effect on third-party sellers, it would appear at first glance that sellers who deal in video game sales would love the new discount change.
With items receiving less of a discount, if any at all, sellers would be expected to see a boost in their profit margins.
However, as the terms and conditions state, this promotion “only applies to products and digital content sold by Amazon. com or Amazon Digital Services LLC. Products and digital content (except for eBooks) sold by third-party sellers or other Amazon entities will not qualify for this offer, even if ‘fulfilled by Amazon. com’ or ‘Prime Eligible.’”
This means that third-party sellers stand to gain absolutely nothing from this new policy besides having the former 20 percent discount lifted from their items.
The fact that third-party sellers’ video games will not have a discount could potentially crater sales for multiple sellers.
With customers only having a deal that realistically confines them to purchasing products from Amazon itself, third-party sellers will have to either slash prices, stop selling video games altogether or find a way to rebuke the new proposal Amazon has instilled in favor of a new one.
While the latter hypothetical is unlikely, Amazon would be forced to hear sellers out if they banded together to create a policy that is more favorable to them.
For sellers who dabble in video game sales, this news is likely appalling unless you were severely hamstrung by the 20 percent discount on pre-orders and could not turn a profit on new releases because of it.
While sellers may be upset that customers are unlikely to pre-order video games from them, they should consider shifting their focus to selling video game accessories or older games that can be purchased at a lower price.
Having to adjust on a whim like this is unfair for sellers, but remaining flexible and diversifying the products one sells should keep their business afloat no matter how much this new pre-order discount affects them.

6. Little Mac Amiibo
Little Mac became an official member of the playable character roster in Super Smash Bros. with the releases of the 3DS and Wii U versions. Unfortunately, it looks like the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U may be the only game to take advantage of this Amiibo. The last game of the Punch-Out series came out in 2009 after a 15-year absence. So far, Nintendo has not even hinted at a potential new entry starring Little Mac. Therefore, you may not get much usage on his figure.

Although Captain Falcon is the star of the F-Zero series, a lot of fans probably recognize him as one of the iconic fighters in Super Smash Bros. Of course, this is somewhat of a bad news for his Amiibo as Nintendo has not released a major F-Zero game since F-Zero GX for the Gamecube in 2003. However, a tribute track was added to Mario Kart 8 via DLC. So there may be a chance that we could see a revival at some point, which should make this cool-looking figure more useful.

Although no new Kid Icarus game has been announced, Nintendo did recently released Kid Icarus: Uprising on the 3DS. The franchise also has a heavy presence in the new Super Smash Bros. games. With that said, it is likely that we don’t get more than one game, which limits the amount of times we can utilize the Pit figurine.

While the Donkey Kong franchise is not as popular as Mario and Zelda, the games still sell a sizable amount. Nintendo already released Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze earlier in the year; so it may take some time for the next game to come out on the Wii U. On the other hand, the developer could always patch in Amiibo support for the existing title. Either way, Diddy Kong should be among the figurines that should be used along with Donkey Kong.

Aside from the recently-released Hyrule Warriors, Princess Zelda hasn’t really been a playable character. So we could be seeing more of the princess aside from her usual appearances in the Legend of Zelda series.

But that doesn’t mean we’re resting on our laurels, as this week sees another update in our weekly list of Amazon new releases, fronted by the return of the gorgeous Star Wars Battlefront, as well as a couple Nintendo games, a Ghibli box set and (ugh) an extended version of The Hobbit movies. Star Wars Battlefront
It feels like this was announced a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, but EA’s reboot of the Star Wars’ greatest shooting franchise has arrived. Today will be a day long remembered, laser brains. Oh thank the maker, and – eh, it’d be cheap to just fill this with Star Wars quotes. The short version is this game looks incredible, you can play as alll the most famous heores and villains of the original trilogy, fight on multiple famous locales, and blow up a god damn AT-AT. There’s even promise of Episode VII content in the The $50 season pass (that’s a lot for a DLC pass, isn’t it?) Also, if you’re looking for a new console with the game, grab the Special edition PS4 which comes with Star Wars Bounty Hunter from the PS2 for some reason.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
This week in November is typically when Nintendo launches its biggest games of the year. This week has seen the launch of Smash Bros., Zeldas, and Super Mario games, and this week we get… Mario Tennis for Wii U? Look, you’ll find few people who love Mario Tennis more than the old Hankster, but this is just a little bit underwhelming. If the latest Nintendo Direct hadn’t shown a strong lineup for 2016, this would be even sadder, but as it stands this should be a totally ok Mario sports title, likely as passably good as the last 3DS entry. It’s no Star Fox or Metroid, but Wii U owners should be used to lower expectations at this point.
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon
Speaking of underwhelming Nintendo launches, their ‘big’ release for 3DS this holiday season is a new Mystery Dungeon spin-off. These games have always been a bit of a conundrum to me – the roguelike genre is one of the most hardcore in games, yet Nintendo hires the masters of the form, Chunsoft, to make a simpler version for kids of the world. Oh well, it’s not for me to reason why, I suppose. However, I think I’ll stick with trying to finish Omega Ruby instead, thanks.
Deadpool Remaster
And here we thought we’d seen the last of this game when Activision aggressively delisted it at the close of 2014. It seems the Deadpool game is as unkillable as its protagonist, because his silly little action game has returned, this time spit-polished for a new-gen remastering. This PS4 and Xbox One port seems simple enough, with most of the DLC packed in and little else, but if you didn’t play this one the first time around, it’s an amusing adventure covered in blood and swears. Ya know, the type of thing Marvel usually frown upon (though I don’t think you’ll see Wade Wilson smoking in this one.

Hayao Miyazaki is the most celebrated animator of the last 50 years, and for good reason. Films like My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are some of the most fully realized worlds ever shown in theaters, capturing the hearts of people from just about every age and part of the planet. Now that he’s retired, Amazon has an exquisite looking special collection of every feature length film Miyazaki directed all in one box set. Plus, there are some fantastic bonuses as well that will likely justify the price. Out this November, this looks like a great gift for those you love most.
Avatar: The Complete Series + Book
I feel bad I’ve never really watched this show – I’ve seen more of Korra than I have of the original. For those looking to give it a shot, as well as longtime fans, this special Amazon edition of the entire series looks to be an great value for noobs and collectors alike. You not only get every episode, but also a companion book. Not unlike the Miyazaki set, it looks like Amazon is giving these special editions of niche loves like this the royal treatment, and I’m definitely excited for what else is on the way.
Hobbit, The: Motion Picture Trilogy (Extended Cut)
Wait, I wanted something fun, not to be tortured! Growing up, I loved the book The Hobbit so much, and dreamed of the day I’d see Bilbo Baggins confront Smaug on the big screen. When that moment finally happened, it was everything I dreamed it would be. The other 8 hours of film, not so much. Just like Lucas, Peter Jackson spent a lot of good will with this indulgent prequel trilogy that was at least one film longer than it needed to be. And now you can get the full extended edition of the trilogy, which has even an hour more footage! Oh man, think of how many songs and poems Jackson could fit into this one. If you’re still a fan of Jackson’s Middle-earth, then you’ll be wanting this, otherwise I’d avoid another visit to Laketown.
