The first year James Gunn offered the Intensive English Institute on the Teaching of Science Fiction, a teacher from Buffalo, New York, asked him how many books a teacher should read in order to have a sound background for the teaching of science fiction: "I said, offhand, about a hundred books and gave her a list prepared by a committee of the Science Fiction Writers of America and published, together with a commentary by Alexei Panshin, in the June 15, 1970, issue of Library Journal. Since then more than 30,000 books have been published and the list is dated. Below is my own list and my own comments. Though based on the original SFWA list, my list has deletions and additions, for the period not only after, but before 1970. An earlier version of this list also was published in Library Journal, November 15, 1988."

Amazon Reveals Their Most Popular Authors!
It took a while before I finally noticed that had Amazon started releasing some fun (and very useful) new information. It’s always been possible to check Amazon’s list of their best-selling Kindle ebooks (and print books). But now a new page Amazon also reveals their best-selling authors!

It’s called “Amazon Author Rank,” and it’s updated every hour. (I was really touched to see Maya Angelou rising to the #1 last month, as the news spread about her death…) And each author’s name is followed by a list of their most popular books. It’s a great way to find new books to read — and to discover books that other readers enjoy.
I was really surprised by the variety on the list. Amazon’s most popular authors seemed to be writing in entirely different genres. James Patterson was #6 on Saturday morning — the author of mystery thrillers like Unlucky 13 (in a series he’s named “Women’s Murder Club.”) But right below him was Nora Roberts, the romance novelist, whose most popular books are the three Ireland-themed books in “The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy”.
And the #1 most-popular author on Amazon was the author of some great literary fiction. John Green wrote The Fault in Our Stars, which Time magazine called the best fiction book of 2012, and last month it was chosen by The Today Show as the pick for their virtual book club. It tells the story of two teenagers who both have cancer, “kindred spirits, sharing an irreverent sense of humor and immense charm,” (according to the book’s description at Amazon). Amazon applauds the book for shwoing them bravely facing two enormous challenges at the same time. “Watching them fall in love even as they face universal questions of the human condition–How will I be remembered? Does my life, and will my death, have meaning?–has a raw honesty that is deeply moving.
Of course, Amazon’s list also features Stephen King, whose most popular book hasn’t even been released yet! (When I checked on Saturday, Amazon was touting his new mystery, Mr. Mercedes — even though its release date was Wednesday, June 3rd!) And it’s nice to see that George R. R. Martin is still popular. His most popular book is the Game of Thrones box set — the whole Song of Ice and Fire Series (available on the Kindle for just $19.99)
I’m always looking for new books to read. And it looks like Amazon’s Author Rank is going to be a fun new way to find them!

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.” ― J. D. Salinger

What is the best book in the world or the best writer? To these questions there may be thousands of responses, and many are those who have tried all sorts of ways, more or less scientific, to designate a winner: according to the number of copies sold, the impact that had a particular book, the number of awards received, the number of characters or even number of pages.
J. Peder Zane, a former employee of the New York Times, currently a professor of journalism, had another idea: to make a top of the best of the best books and writers, based on a score awarded 125 authors contemporary such as Stephen King, Norman Mailer, Jonathan Franzen, Annie Proulx, Claire Messud, Margaret Drabble, Michael Chabon or Peter Carey.
544 books were mentioned, and the number of points received from each writer was constitution and charts: the best novel of the twentieth century, the best novel of the nineteenth century, the best authors in the number of Selected works, the best authors in the number of points and still there was a vast collection of top books and authors.

Calculate How Many Books Amazon Sells from Ranks
Note: This analysis is in no way sponsored or approved by Amazon. com. And a quick note for those authors whose sales ranks don't appear to agree with their reported sales. You have to keep in mind that Amazon sales rank included sales of both new and used books from Marketplace sellers, who ship more than one in three items sold by through Amazon. I've added a new section about the new Amazon Author ranks lower on the page.
The following graph is based on January, February and March data from last year, I'll update it when the ranking system settles out again, but the situation hasn't changed much because paper book sales are steady if not declining. The graph addresses books with an average Amazon sales rank between 1,000 and 1,000,000. Actual sales vary with day, week and season (think Christmas), and the January/February data period includes Spring semester textbook sales. Amazon's textbook sales grow every year, so they have increasing impact on the rankings during textbook season, causing non-textbook sales to look poor by comparison. The sales equivalencies for lower ranks (ie, bigger rank number getting into the millions) mean little in terms of average sales unless you can average them over years. I cannot stress enough that for any sales rank, checking the rank on Amazon twice and looking at this graph means nothing. You have to get an average rank for at least a week on stronger sellers for it to have any meaning at all. Amazon's overall share of industry book sales has grown so much in recent years that the bestsellers are disappearing from the main graph! Amazon has sold more than 7.5 million unique titles at this point, and rankings indicate a title must sell at least one copy a year to remain above a rank of two million.
The very top ranks graph is a rough estimate from a couple summers ago when Amazon was displaying stocking data for books on the product pages.

Two books about selling on Amazon that everybody should take a look at. The first is Steve Weber's "The Home Based Bookstore", which describes in detail the art of selling through Amazon Marketplace. The second is Aaron Shepard's "Aiming at Amazon" a publishing business plan that focuses on Amazon sales. Finally, if you're interested in the publishing system I use to make my living, and for which I've walked away from many trade contract offers, I summed it all up in "Print-on-Demand Book Publishing", not to be confused with subsidy publishing.
Several parties have written academic papers based my earlier sales rank analysis and linking this page. I used to keep copies on this site, but I realized that they are all in the Internet Archive as far back as 2001.
Amazon introduced Author Ranks on October 10, 2012, with two weeks of trailing data. The idea is very similar to sales ranks, it's simply ranks authors by total sales of paper books or Kindle eBooks each day within the Amazon system. The initial data in my own Author Central account showed my author sales rank for books:
