Packaging and prep requirements

Learn about the general preparation requirements for sending inventory to Amazon fulfillment centers, as well as the specific product categories that require specialized prep.

Before sending products to fulfillment centers, it's important to know what is suitable for the Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) process and what is not. For more information, visit FBA product restrictions and Shipping and routing requirements.

Packaging requirements

Follow these general requirements when shipping units to Amazon fulfillment centers. Certain products have other specific requirements. Amazon may refuse, return, or repackage any product delivered to a fulfillment center with inadequate or non-compliant packaging at your expense.

Any FNSKU you use on a unit must be unique and must correspond to one unique product. For example, each assortment type, such as size or color, must have a different FNSKU. Each unit must have an exterior scannable barcode or label (which includes a scannable barcode and the corresponding human-readable numbers) that is easily accessible. For more information, see FBA product barcode requirements. Remove, cover, or render unscannable any existing scannable barcodes on the outside of shipping boxes. For example, cover existing barcodes with opaque tape or use a black felt-tip marker to render the barcode unscannable. This prevents the incorrect barcode from being accidentally scanned during the receiving process.

Loose products

Each unit, including multiple-volume book sets, must be contained within a single, secure package.

Amazon does not accept units that would require Amazon to assemble multiple pieces (for example, wheelbarrows where the handles and legs are separate, but are sold as one piece). Units that are not contained in secure packaging, like loose sleeves or pouches, must be bagged or secured with a non-adhesive band or removable tape. Footwear, regardless of material, must be packaged with no shoe material exposed, either in shoe boxes or in poly bags with a suffocation warning.

Sold as set

Units that are sets (for example, a NASCAR set of six unique Hot Wheels cars, sold as one unit) must be marked as sets on their packaging. Add a label to the unit that clearly states that the products are to be received and sold as a single unit. For example, "Sold as set," "Ready to ship," or "This is a set. Do not separate."

Watch this brief v >

Not permitted: Separate units within a set. Permitted: Units clearly labeled as a set and sealed so they cannot be separated.

Not permitted: Separate units within a set. Permitted: Units clearly labeled as a set and sealed so they cannot be separated.

Boxed units

Must be six-sided. Must have openings or a lid that will not easily open on its own. If the box can easily open on its own, use tape, glue, or staples to keep it closed. Must not collapse when medium pressure is applied to any of the sides. If the boxed unit has perforated sides or openings, the product must pass a 3-foot drop test, consisting of one drop on each side, and one drop on a corner. If the product does not pass the drop test, it must be placed in a poly bag with a suffocation warning.

Poly-bagged units

Poly bags used to protect units must meet the following requirements:

Poly bags with a 5-inch opening or larger (measured when flat) must have a suffocation warning, either printed on the bag or attached as a label. Failure to apply a suffocation warning may lead to the items being re-bagged.
      For example:

The warning should be printed or placed in a prominent location and in a legible font size for the size of the bag. Print size of this warning should conform to the following table:
Total length plus width of bagMinimum print size
    60 inches or more24 point
    40 to 59 inches18 point
    30 to 39 inches14 point
    Less than 29 inches10 point

The thickness of the bag must be at least 1.5 mil (thousandth of an inch) . The poly bag must be transparent. The poly bag must have a barcode (UPC, EAN, etc.) or X00-label that is scannable through the bag or have an X00- or ASIN label on the outside of the bag. Poly bags must be completely sealed. The poly bag or shrink wrap must not protrude more than 3 inches past the dimensions of the product.

Case-packed products

All products in a box must have matching SKU and condition and must have been packaged together by the manufacturer. All boxes with the same product must contain equal quantities of that product in each box. For example, a case pack of 24 units must always contain 24 units. The case pack limit is 150 units per case. While receiving this type of shipment, the fulfillment center scans one unit from the box and the box is placed in inventory. There is no need to scan every unit because they are all the same. In some cases, a manufacturer or distributor may package more than one case pack into a larger box called a master carton. Master cartons do not qualify as a case pack and must be split at the appropriate case pack level.

Watch this brief v >

Individual items: Each box may contain one or more products of varying quantities and conditions. Case-packed products: All products in a box must have matching SKU and condition. All boxes with the same product must contain equal quantities of that product in each box and must have been packed by the manufacturer.

Expiration dates

Products that expire must include the expiration date on the master carton in 36-point or larger font And on the indiv >Expiration dates must be displayed in the format MM-DD-YYYY or MM-YYYY. If the expiration date is printed in a different format, a sticker with the correct format must be applied, covering the original expiration date.

Products that expire and are contained in packaging that requires additional prep, such as glass jars or bottles, must be prepped to ensure that the expiration date is accessible for Amazon associates during the receiving process. For more information about requirements for products with expiration dates, see Expiration-dated FBA inventory.

Watch this brief v >

Marketing materials

Amazon will not accept marketing materials such as pre-priced labels, pamphlets, price tags, or other non-Amazon labels.

Use safety knives with covered blades when packing products. This helps prevent sharp objects, such as blades, from being accidentally left in boxes and potentially injuring an Amazon associate or Amazon customer.

Track Your Package

After an order has been shipped, many packages can be tracked on Amazon. com. au. You can find tracking information in your order details. If an order includes multiple items, each may have separate delivery dates and tracking information.

Wondering where your stuff is?

Note:

If the estimated delivery date for your package has passed and your tracking information hasn't changed, please allow an additional day or two for the package to be delivered. Usually packages arrive on or shortly after the estimated delivery date. If your package shows as delivered, but you haven't yet received it, go to Find a Missing Package for more information. If you can't find any tracking information for your parcel, it could be due to one of the following reasons:
A delay in the updates to the tracking database. Your package contains items sold and fulfilled by a third-party seller on Amazon. com. au. Third-party sellers sometimes don't provide Amazon with tracking information for their orders. To obtain tracking updates you may need to visit the website of the carrier delivering your package.

Contacting Carriers

For orders fulfilled by Amazon AU, in most cases, up to date tracking information is available within Your Orders. In the event that you wish to contact the courier delivering your package for additional information, you can find the courier's contact details below:

Previewing and Publishing Your Kindle Create Book

Previewing your book

After you've finished preparing your book and are ready to publish it, use the Previewer tool in Kindle Create to check the layout and formatting. The Previewer shows you how your eBook will look on tablets, Kindle E-readers, and phones. To use Previewer, click the Preview button in Kindle Create.

In Previewer, you can change device type, text size, and font face. You can move through your eBook page-by-page, chapter-by-chapter, image-by-image. You can type a book location or drag the scroll bar to change the position dynamically. There is also a Table of Contents view that shows the Kindle Interactive TOC.

While previewing your eBook, use this checklist:

Go to the table of contents (TOC) (where applicable).
On the TOC page, confirm that each item is clickable and links to the correct location in the book. There should be no page numbers. In the Kindle Interactive TOC, confirm that each part, chapter, or section is clickable and links to the correct location in the book. There should be no page numbers.

Go to any location in the book (reflowable eBooks only).
Font size. Change the font size in the Kindle menu. The book font should change accordingly. All body text should not be bold or italicized. Typeface. Change the typeface in the Kindle menu. The book font should change accordingly.

Go back to the first page and flip through every page of the book.
Front matter. Make sure that the page breaks and formatting are correct. Chapter title pages. Make sure that chapter title pages are formatted consistently throughout the book. Images. Images should not be too small. Make sure that all text in images is legible. Large pictures should be scaled to fit the page and display in their entirety on one screen. Tables. Tables should appear correctly. Make sure that all text in tables is legible. Material only included with physical book. There should not be any references to material (such as a CD or DVD) that is only included with the physical book. Background settings (reflowable eBooks only). Confirm that your text is legible in all background color modes (white, black, mint, and sepia). Audio and video files (Print Replica only). Click each audio and video file and confirm that they work properly. Review the title and description in each pop-up for accuracy and usefulness. Magnification (comics only). Activate Guided View and confirm that all panels have corresponding magnification, no content is overflowing the edge of the screen, and magnified reading order is correct.

Uploading your book on KDP

Video: Saving and exporting with Kindle Create

When you're done previewing and updating your book, create a publishable file by clicking the Publish button in Kindle Create. This creates two files: a work file (.kcb) that allows you to update your book later and a publishable file (.kpf) you can upload on KDP.

Save your work file (.kcb) by selecting File > Save Project. Click the Publish button. The Save File for Publication dialog box is displayed. Accept or change the file location and name and click Save. When packaging is complete, the confirmation box is displayed. Upload the. kpf file on KDP to publish it.

Adding your textbook to the Kindle store

If your eBook is a textbook, you need to add this search keyword when you enter your book details in KDP during title setup so that your textbook will appear in the Textbook category:

You have to add the keyword exactly as it appears above, complete with underscores. If you don't, your book won't appear in the Textbook category in the Kindle Store.
