Amazon Echo Show tips and tricks: Master Alexa from a touchscreen

- Get to grips with your Echo Show

Amazon's Echo speaker now comes with a touchscreen - and whole host of hidden ways to use Alexa.

In Pocket-lint's review of the Echo Show we noted that Amazon could go in so many directions with it. Sure, we'd like to see more touch-enabled Alexa skills to make the most of that screen, but in the meantime, it's still plenty useful. If you've just bought Echo Show and want to know the best way to leverage it right now, here are several tips and tricks we've rounded up.

Set up your Echo Show

This might be obvious, but we have to begin somewhere: to get started with Echo Show, place it in a central location, whether that be your kitchen counter, your living room, your nightstand, or wherever, then plug the included power adapter into it and then into a power outlet, and follow the on-screen prompts that appear to select a language, connect to your Wi-Fi, log in to your Amazon account, etc.

Reset your Echo Show

If you're having trouble with your Echo Show, restart it to see if that solves the issues - hey, ya never know. Just unplug the power adapter from the back of the device or from the wall outlet, and then plug the power adapter back in. You can also reset it to factory settings. Say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings.

From there, select Device Options and tap Reset to Factory Defaults. Keep in mind this will delete all your personal information and erase all your settings on Echo Show. And once the device resets, it begins the setup process, which we detailed above.

Use the Alexa app

You need the free Alexa app to manage your Echo Show and feature options. To download the Alexa app, go to the app store on your mobile device and search for the "Alexa app" (or, you can use the links below). If you don't have a mobile device, you can go to this Amazon Alexa site from Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Internet Explorer browsers to manage your Echo Show.

Navigate your Echo Show

You can navigate Echo Show using both your voice and the touch screen. Here's how:

Go to the home screen: Say, "Alexa, go home." You can also swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Home. See available settings: Say, "Alexa, go to settings." You can also swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings. Scroll through a list: Say,"Alexa, scroll up/down." You can also swipe in different directions on the screen (left, right, up, and down). Media playback: Say, "Alexa, pause" or "next", "previous", "go back," and "rewind" or "forward [x hours, minutes, or seconds]". Light bar definitions

The bottom of your Echo Show's screen will light up different colours as a visual indicator. Here's what those colours mean:

Blue: A blue bar appears on the screen to indicate that Alexa is processing your request. Red: A red bar appears when your device's microphones and camera are turned off. Orange: An orange bar appears when your device is experiencing connectivity issues. Purple: A purple bar appears when Do Not Disturb is on.

Change Echo Show's wake word

When you want to communicate with your Echo show, just say "Alexa," followed by a command. But you can change this "wake word" to Echo, Amazon, or Computer, if you prefer. Just say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings. Then, tap Device options > Wake word > and select the wake word you want to use instead.

Enable Alexa skills

Skills are voice-enabled features that enhance the functionality of your Alexa device. These can be built-in or offered by third-party developers. Enabling Alexa skills on Alexa devices use to be complicated, but Amazon recently streamlined this process. All you have to do is say, "Alexa, enable the [name of skill] skill." Go to the Alexa Skills store on the Amazon website to browse available skills.

Manage Alexa skills

To view and manage your skills, you will need to use the Alexa app. Go to the menu and select Skills, then select Your Skills (at the top).

Decide which cards rotate on screen

The feed on the home screen on Echo Show has several home cards that rotate automatically. But you can update which cards appear or don't appear. Just say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings. From there, select Home Screen, then select Home Card Preferences, and toggle the icon next to the card name. Simples.

Set a background photo on Echo Show

To set your own photo as the background on your Echo Show's screen, go to the Alexa app and upload a photo from your mobile device. From the Menu, select Settings, then tap your device, and in the Home Screen Background section, select Choose a photo. Alternatively, from there, you can also set an album as your background or an entire collection of photos, as long as they're stored in Prime Photos.

Turn Echo Show into a digital photo frame

This trick expands on the tip above; in a nutshell, you can create an album on Prime Photos and then ask Alexa to show your album for a slideshow (Alexa, show my [album name] album"). To adjust the slideshow speed, go to Settings and then Display.

Turn off Echo Show screen

Yes, you can turn off the screen on your Echo Show. This is useful if someone suddenly walks into the room and you don't want them to see what you were watching or doing. Just say, "Alexa, turn off the screen." To turn the screen back on, touch it or use your device's wake word (which, by default, is "Alexa"). You can also turn your Echo Show completely off by pressing the mute button for a few seconds.

Dim the screen

The Echo Show's screen automatically dims itself and reverts to the clock-only display when you haven't touched it in a while (unless you’re watching something, such as a trailer on YouTube or movie from Prime Video). But you can also force the screen to dim at any time. There’s a manual dimmer switch on the Show’s main menu; just swipe down from the top of the screen to access it.

Start a video call

With Alexa messaging and calling, you can place a video call to any Echo Show owner (and receive one, too); all you have to do is say, "Alexa, call [name of contact]." The contact will need to be listed under the Contact screen of the Alexa app, however. Go here to learn more about how to set up this feature. To toggle the video aspect, say, "Video [off / on]” or touch the on/off button on your screen.

By toggling off the video, you're essentially just having a voice call with the other Echo user. Now, when you receive a video/voice call, your Echo Show will sound an alarm and glow green. You can answer or ignore any call by saying, “Answer” or “Ignore" or by tapping the ignore button from the Alexa app. To end your call, just say, “Hang up." You can also tap the end button from the Alexa app.

Use Drop in

Drop In lets you instantly connect with other Echo Show users. You can enable Drop In via the Alexa app and grant permission to people from your address book. (Go to Amazon's help page for more information on granting permission.) To Drop In, say, "Drop In on [contact name]," or, from the Conversation screen in Alexa app, select the Drop In bar and then choose the contact you want to Drop In on.

When someone Drops In on you, the light bar on your Echo Show will pulse green. The person will be able to automatically connect and can hear anything within range of your device. Meanwhile, you will see a frosted glass video that transitions to clear video shortly after connecting. The purpose of this is to give you time to prepare for the call so that you are not caught off guard.

Enable Do Not Disturb

Use the Echo Show's Do Not Disturb feature to block Alexa from alerting you about incoming calls and messages. To turn on Do Not Disturb, say, "Alexa, don't disturb me." To turn off the feature, say, "Turn off Do Not Disturb,” or you can tap the Do Not Disturb button on your Echo Show’s screen. You can also schedule Do Not Disturb for a specific time via the Alexa app (under settings).

Watch a film or TV show

You can watch films or TV shows on Echo Show - but only from from Amazon Prime Video (included with your paid Prime membership), as well as programming from your active Amazon Channels subscriptions (like Showtime, HBO, and Starz). Just ask Alexa to show you films or TV shows by title, genre, and more. After your video starts playing, you can use your voice to control video playback.

Watch a trailer

Want to instantly watch a new film trailer? Just say, "Alexa, show me the trailer for the movie [film title],” and if the trailer is available, it will start immediately playing. We recommend trying, “Show me the trailer for the movie Mother!”

Watch a YouTube video

You can watch YouTube videos on Echo Show. Just ask Alexa to search or play any type video. For instance, you can say, "Show me cat videos on YouTube," then select a video from the list, and use common playback commands like "Play" or "Pause." You can also tap the screen during the video to see playback options. After your video plays, Echo Show will play other videos from your search.

Pair your Alexa voice remote

You can pair the Alexa voice remote to your Echo Show as another means of navigating the device. Just say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings. From there, select Device Options, then tap Pair Amazon Echo Remote, and follow the prompts on screen. Now, you can use control video playback from the remote, if you prefer.

Pair your mobile device

Your Echo Show is Bluetooth-enabled so you can stream popular services, whether that be iTunes or Google Play Music, from a mobile device. Just say, "Alexa, pair my phone." Then, open the Bluetooth settings menu on your mobile device, and select your Echo Show. Alexa will tell you if the connection is successful. If it is, you will be free to stream audio from your mobile device to Echo Show.

Enable multi-room music

You can use this feature to play music across multiple Alexa-enabled devices in your home (including the Echo Show) at the same time. You can go here to learn how to set-up multi-room music. But, in a nutshell, just follow these steps:

Select Smart Home from the Alexa app's menu. Select the Groups category. Select Create Groups to create a group. Tap on Multi-Room Music Group. Select a pre-set group name or tap “Create Custom” and enter a name. Tap Next. The Alexa app will confirm it created your group. Once enabled, say: “Play [song or artist] [Echo devices' group name]”.

Make Echo Show read aloud items you touch

The Echo Show has a VoiceView Screen Reader that reads aloud items you touch on the screen. According to Amazon, when enabled, you can use gestures to navigate and interact your Echo Show, and VoiceView will describe the actions you make on screen. This is an accessibility feature that people with disabilities might find useful. Go here for more information about how to set up and manage it.

Magnify your Echo Show's screen

This is another accessibility feature. When enabled, the Screen Magnifier will let you enlarge items on your screen to improve readability. To turn on the Screen Magnifier, say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select Settings. From there, select Accessibility and tap Screen Magnifier. Used Closed Captions

On your Echo Show, you can enable Closed Captioning for supported videos and movie trailers. To turn on closed captions, say, "Alexa, go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the screen and select Settings. From there, select Accessibility and tap Closed Captioning. The Echo Show is a variation of the Amazon Echo smart speaker product line. What makes the Echo Show different is that in addition to the Alexa voice assistant feature included on Echo devices, the Echo Show offers a 10-inch, 8-inch, or 5.5-inch touchscreen display depending on the model. This feature displays content visually and provides an additional interactive way to navigate through the Echo Show features.

Information in this article applies to the Amazon Echo Show 8, Echo Show 5, and Echo Show.

What You Can Do With the Echo Show

The Echo Show does everything the Amazon Echo does and more:

Listen To Music

As with other Echo devices, the Echo Show plays music. Stream from Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Apple Music, and more. The Echo Show has Bluetooth so you can listen to music on compatible headphones and speakers, and you can stream music to and from your smartphone to the Echo Show.

The Echo Show has a screen that displays music lyrics and other available information related to the music you are playing.

Watch Videos and View Photos

Watch video clips or view photos from a compatible smartphone, scan daily news clips, and preview movie trailers. Also, if you're an Amazon Prime member, view movies and TV shows on the Echo Show screen. Due to an ongoing dispute between Amazon and Google, the Echo Show does not support YouTube, but a browser (Silk or Firefox) that runs in the background provides access to the YouTube. com website.

Make Video Phone Calls

Use the Echo Show with the Alexa app to make phone calls to others that use Echo products or compatible smartphones. The Echo Show adds the bonus of two-way video calling with others that have an Echo Show. You can also use the Echo Show as a video intercom using the Drop-In feature.

Control Your Home

Use the Echo Show as your home assistant since it comes integrated with a smart home hub. At its most basic, the Echo Show serves as a bedside clock radio. It integrates with third-party control systems (additional purchases may be required), such as Wemo, Samsung Smart Things, Hue Personal Wireless Lighting, Insteon, Ring, Arlo, Wink, and Ecobee that control lighting, thermostats, security systems, baby monitors, and turn your TV and audio system on and off. Many of these options can be set up with Alexa Skills.

Get Information

Ask Alexa any question you want (about the weather, sports scores, movie times, traffic, spelling, or word definitions) and an answer will be spoken and displayed if available. You can also use the Echo Show to find recipes, shop, order takeout and delivery, make restaurant reservations, buy movie tickets, get an Uber ride, and other tasks by tapping into options provided by the Alexa Skills feature.

There are other ways to customize the Amazon Echo Show. For example, stream local radio stations based on your location.

Inside the Amazon Echo Show

The second generation (2018) Echo Show is compact and lightweight. It measures 6.9 inches high, 9.7 inches wide, and 4.2 inches deep. It weighs 62 ounces. To provide support for everything the Echo Show does, here's the stuff on the inside that makes the magic work:

Onboard control buttons for Volume Up/Down and Mics/Camera On/Off. When you turn the microphones off, the camera turns off. Eight built-in microphones located on top of the unit surrounding the onboard controls for voice recognition. The microphones are always on (unless manually turned-off), even when music is playing so that you can give voice commands while listening to music. The Echo Show does not provide a physical video output for connection to a TV or video projector.

For video phone calling and photo-taking, there is a built-in 5 MP photo and video camera. Compatible with an optional Alexa Voice Remote. Use this to communicate with the Echo Show when you don't want to speak loudly. Hold the remote to your mouth and speak softly without disturbing others. Incorporates an Intel Atom mobile processor for fast voice recognition, content access, and touchscreen display navigation.

Amazon Echo Version Differences

The Amazon Echo Show is available in several models, but most of the differences are cosmetic. Aside from slightly weaker audio performance, the original (2017) model of the Echo Show does not include built-in support for NBC, Hulu Live, YouTube, or recipe tutorials. There are also two smaller variations of the Echo Show.

Amazon Echo Show 8

Released in 2019, the Echo Show 8 has an 8-inch 1280x800 pixel resolution display, a one-megapixel camera, and two 10W per channel speakers with a 3.5 mm audio output connector. The audio quality is on par with the 2018 Echo Show, and there's a new Drop-In On All feature that starts a group video chat with everyone in your family who owns an Echo device.

Another exclusive feature is built-in integration with the Food Network. Watch Food Network TV shows and have Alexa save your favorite recipes. Subscribe to the Food Network Kitchen service to participate in the on-demand cooking classes.

Amazon Echo Show 5

This version comes with a 5.5-inch 960x480 pixel resolution screen, one 4-watt speaker (there's also a 3.5 mm audio output connector to connect to an external powered speaker or audio system), and a one-megapixel camera. However, Echo Show 5 does not include Zigbee device control compatibility, which the standard Echo Show provides.

The Bottom Line

The Echo Show adds a twist to the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo smart speaker product line by adding visual interactivity. With the ability to listen to music, view photos and videos, watch Amazon Prime movies and TV shows, access useful information, and perform many personal and household tasks, the Echo Show is a smart speaker that incorporates some features found on a smart TV. Check out this great comprehensive guide to using the new Amazon Echo. From start to finish, we show you how to get the most out of the Amazon Echo's features and her cloud based voice service Alexa.

Hey what’s going on? This is Neha Joy with Howcast Tech.

So TODAY we got the Echo, Amazon’s smart-home device and its cloud-based voice service, Alexa. That’s really just a fancy way of saying “virtual assistant.” It’s like Siri, or Google Now, or Cortana, you get it. Entirely voice-activated, Alexa can tell you the weather, traffic, news, sports, schedule, shopping lists, and even plays music— AND she can do even more, if you’ve got a Prime account! Want her to play Prime music? Wanna order items directly from Amazon? You’ll wanna sign up for Prime. We’ll get to that later.

Included is the Echo. Power adapter. A Quick Set-Up Card. A “Things To Try” Card. AND. that’s it. Also you can scrap these last two, cause I got you covered.

Found on top of your Echo is the Light Ring. It tells you what Alexa, the virtual assistant, is doing. When it’s off— Alexa’s ready for requests. When it’s blue— she’s processing them. Also on top are its two and only buttons. The Action Button— Which wakes her up and silences alarms and timers. And the Microphone-Off Button— Which, YOU GUESSED IT, turns the microphones off.

This stops Alexa from answering your requests. When it is toggled, the Light Ring turns red. Finally, wrapping around the top is the Volume Ring. As you use it, the Light Ring turns white, showing you the volume level. Now all this said, the main way you’ll actually interact with Echo is through voice command— utilizing the seven built-in microphones AND its omni-directional speaker. You should also note, underneath the device, you’ll find the plug and Reset Button. That’s right— this sucker is NOT portable. If you want, you can press and hold that button for five seconds to reset to its factory settings.

This is the “not-fun” part, but we’re gonna plow through and own this nonsense. And it’s gonna be great. First things first— you gotta download the Alexa App for free from your mobile app store. Easy. Side note, you can also access it on your computer at Alexa. Amazon. com. Now open the App and sign into your Amazon account. If you don’t have one, you can sign up here. BAM. Once logged in, follow the simple on-screen directions and bang through the Set-Up— And, TADA!— your set-up’s complete. That was awesome.

So to use Alexa, first you say the Wake-Word, “Alexa,” followed by a voice command. Alexa, what time is it? Alexa, how do you spell nefarious? Alexa, Wikipedia Howcast. You get the idea. If you WANT, you can change the Wake-Word via Settings in the App. Wait is this right?

Alexa can make Shopping and To-Do Lists— Alexa, remind me to get groceries. Alexa, add gummy bears to my shopping list. ..oh and Mallomars too. . and.. add.. gym sesh to my to-do list also. Great. We’ll see. Now she can read your lists aloud OR you can access them in the App. Why would you want to do that? Let’s take a look. When you first open the App, you’ll see the Home Screen— this shows your Request and Action History. Tap the Menu icon in the upper left to reveal, you guessed it— the Menu— where you’ll interface with all of Alexa’s features.

At the top are your Shopping and To-Do Lists. Though you can add items vocally, you can only edit them in the App. You can also access additional options— Shop for items in the Amazon App, search for them in Bing, or even move them between lists.

Alexa can also set timers and alarms. Alexa, remind me when it’s eight o’clock. Cannot.. miss. The Batchelor. When the Alarm goes off— you can either stop it or you can say, “Alexa, snooze,” which buys you another nine minutes of Z’s. I didn’t say Aziz— I said “of Zzzs”—

Like sleeping. Because they’re smart and they can understand me. You can also adjust the volume of Timers and Alarms separate from Echo’s master volume in the App.

Another feature Echo has is called “Skills.” Amazon has partnered with developers to create various Skills or new abilities added monthly to Alexa’s repertoire.

Being that Echo is also a powerful wifi and bluetooth speaker, it comes with many options for playing Music and Audio Books. Included are seven content streaming services, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Audible, Kindle, Prime Music, AND Your Amazon Music Library.

To use it to it's fullest functions you'll want to have Amazon Prime, not sure how much or what it do without a amazon prime account? but I'm sure it be very limited! With a Amazon prime account you can access music and videos, plus other Amazon benefits like free 2 day shipping. Personally I buy very little that's not thru Amazon, seems when I do not buy thru Amazon and have problems with orders it's hell getting any help. But Amazon so far has been a knight in shinning armor so to speak anytime I have a problem with my Amazon orders. Even when the retailer I bought something thru Amazon won't resolve the issue, Amazon has taken charged and either replaced a item or gave me a discount on my next orders, etc. They have really gone out of their way to keep me happy with my online buying experiences thru Amazon. Therefore I can't bad mouth Amazon at all and they've certainly earned my loyalty so far! Unfortunately, Amazon just raised their yearly fee for this up coming next year. Think it's going to be around $113.00 a year now? But if you watch movies and listen to music much on top of buying things online much? The price isn't too bad as long as your wallet can afford the extra cost? All and all with all you get it beats Netflix in my opinion. But I have Netflix too! LOL
