What Are Amazon Lockers and Hubs?

Amazon delivery services might be just around your corner

Amazon Locker offers a safe place to hold items when you don’t want packages left unattended at your home or office after they're delivered. You choose the locker location during the checkout process. Once in a locker, Amazon sends an email with more information about the locker, like the times you can access it and the code you'll need to open it.

Amazon Locker resolves problems around unattended items by providing a safe place for delivery. Before Amazon Locker, many things could befall delivered items; they could be stolen, damaged by the weather, or opened by the wrong family member (there goes the birthday surprise). Amazon lockers are available in convenience stores, postal centers, grocery stores, gas stations, and more, and you can choose a location that is convenient for you.

Amazon Hub is a little different from Amazon Locker, but not much. While Amazon Locker locations are hosted by various third parties, Amazon Hubs are available only in apartment complexes. To find out if your apartment hosts their own Amazon Hub, contact your building's management company.

Find and Set up Amazon Locker and Amazon Hub

To have a future delivery sent to Amazon Locker or a hub at your apartment complex, you need to find a prime drop location near you and add it to your list of delivery addresses. The location you choose doesn’t necessarily have to be near your home, though. It can be close to where you work or some other place you frequent. You can add multiple locker locations, so consider creating a few now.

The e-commerce giant is quietly working to vastly expand its Amazon Hub Locker network, according to a person familiar with the company's plans. It set a goal to evaluate over 1,000 new locations for its lockers every month, with expectations to approve a significant chunk of those sites, the person added.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a company offering pay-as-you go cloud and data storage services, is to nearly double its Irish operation with the creation of 1,000 high-skilled technology jobs in Dublin. The firm, a subsidiary of US online retailer Amazon, said it expects to fill the new roles within two years.

The “hub” service differs from Amazon Lockers, which are in public spaces such as 7-Eleven AvalonBay Communities Inc. will install the lockers at 100 properties over the next year and could expand beyond that, and Equity Residential is experimenting with the lockers at some of its properties.

At the moment, Amazon has fewer than 10,000 lockers located in US convenience stores, apartments and universities, the person said, so the plans point to an aggressive expansion.

"You're talking about almost doubling the program in one year," the person said.

Amazon didn't comment for this story.

The lockers, typically painted bright orange, are self-service kiosks customers can use for pickups and returns of their Amazon packages of electronics, toys, books and other products (though not perishable foods). Customers can open their lockers by punching in a code on a kiosk's touchscreen or scanning a barcode.

Amazon Music Unlimited isn't actually growing faster than Spotify

Critics are taking issue with the claim that Amazon Music Unlimited is growing faster than Spotify. Music Business Worldwide has determined that Amazon grew more percentage-wise (70 percent year-over-year versus Spotify's 32 percent), but it was well behind in terms of raw subscriber numbers. Spotify hit the 100 million subscriber mark by adding 25 million Premium members between its March 2018 and March 2019 quarters -- that's just about double the 13 million Amazon added over a similar period. That rate held up in the second quarter, where Spotify's 108 million total subs represented another jump of 25 million. Amazon's growth is still noteworthy.

The company wants to help launch small businesses in the United States dedicated to taking its packages on the last step of their journey: from I think there's more than enough for everybody," he said. Amazon plans to bring on board hundreds of these new small businesses over the next year

The online retailer's push to grow its Locker program, which started in 2011, appears to be part of Amazon's work to speed shipments and achieve its goal of one-day Prime shipping in the US. With a larger footprint of lockers, Amazon delivery workers will be able to drop off dozens of packages at once, instead of one at a time at individual addresses. Plus, the expansion could help Amazon build its logistics network to make up for FedEx's decision to stop delivering the retailer's US packages.

For brick-and-mortar retailers, adding in new lockers could help them bring in more customers, though this solution comes with a bit of irony. Traditional retailers have been battered by more people shopping online, especially at Amazon, so some shops may see the e-commerce giant as a rival instead of a savior.

Amazon: Facial recognition program for cops detects emotion

SEATTLE (AP) — Amazon has announced its facial recognition program used by one Washington state police agency can now detect emotion, generating concerns from privacy advocates. KING-TV reported Thursday that Amazon announced its Rekognition tool has been enhanced to detect basic emotions, including fear. Officials say the American Civil Liberties Union is seeking a delay on police use of the product without regulation until the implications are discussed. Amazon says Rekognition could be used to monitor unsafe online content and find missing persons on social media.

Amazon first launched its Locker program three years ago, starting in its home base of Seattle along with New York and London. The service has only expanded since then: It ’ s now available in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland, San Diego, and San Francisco, with additional locations in Delaware

Laura Behrens Wu, founder and CEO of shipping software provider Shippo, said a lockers expansion would face a few challenges. First, while lockers may be safer than dropping off packages at a doorstep, customers may balk at the idea of picking up their packages away from home.

Also, adding lockers in stores may boost foot traffic, but perhaps not purchasing. "If someone is carrying a lot of boxes back home, would they want to buy even more stuff to take back home?" she said.

Signs of a renewed focus on the lockers program are already cropping up. Amazon in May unveiled plans to bring its lockers to 200 Stein Mart discount department stores. Also, Rite Aid in June agreed to expand its partnership with Amazon, adding staffed in-store pickups of Amazon packages after already placing lockers in over 300 of its stores.

Additionally, the company a few years ago started rolling out new appearances for its lockers to fit the look of specific stores as a way of convincing more retailers to house them. For instance, the company in Seattle created a set of blue and black lockers at a Chase bank that were branded with a Chase logo, and in Virginia created lockers branded to blend in at a Hilton hotel.

For Amazon, these services help make up for its lack of physical retail stores. Plus, they're much easier for delivery workers to locate than finding specific addresses.

"It makes it much easier for unskilled workers to do last-mile delivery," Behrens Wu said.
