Since 1995, Amazon has grown to become one of the world's largest retailers, and while it has opened a handful of brick-and-mortar stores of its own and acquired the grocery chain Whole Foods Market, Amazon remains an online retailer primarily. That means customers need to have their orders delivered to their homes, offices or other locations, often using the two-day shipping included with Amazon's Prime service.

Amazon delivers packages seven days a week, including through the U. S. Postal Service. In some cases, there may be extra charges for speedier deliveries, including USPS Sunday delivery.

How Amazon Sunday Delivery Works

Amazon works with a number of delivery carriers including the U. S. Postal Service, UPS, and independent couriers and carriers.

Not all of these carriers offer Sunday delivery. Notably, UPS does not, although it's considering adding the service; UPS Saturday delivery is already available. The USPS, however, delivers on Sunday for a limited number of customers, including Amazon, and for certain premium services such as Priority Mail Express. That means it is possible to have a postal worker deliver an Amazon package on Sunday, even though regular mail service isn't available.

Amazon's basic Prime service, which includes unlimited two-day shipping as well as other services such as streaming music, usually guarantees delivery within two business days, so Sunday delivery is not guaranteed. In some cases, though, some products in some areas may be delivered on Sunday with the usual Prime guarantee.

Using Prime on a Sunday

Prime sometimes offers free same-day delivery or even free delivery within two hours, the latter through a service called Prime Now. Prime Now is available seven days a week, including Sunday, but it's only available in certain ZIP codes around the country and for certain items.

In some areas, Prime Now delivers groceries from Whole Foods and meals from various nearby restaurants on Sundays.

Free same-day or next-day delivery on some items is available for Prime members for orders over $35, or Prime members can pay extra to have smaller orders delivered the same day they are ordered. Amazon users who aren't in the Prime program can sometimes pay to expedite orders, even to have them delivered the same day or next day including on Sunday.

Using Amazon Lockers

For many people, it's more convenient to have items delivered on a weekend because someone will be home to receive the delivery. If you are unable to have an item delivered to you because you're not home, you can use an Amazon Locker to receive an item at a nearby business, such as a grocery or drug store. Amazon will notify you when the package arrives and give you a one-time combination to open the locker.

You can usually access packages delivered to an Amazon Locker for at least three days when the store that contains the lockers is open, including on Sunday.
