How to Shop With Amazon Alexa

Use your voice to shop and let Alexa do the heavy lifting

Is Alexa your personal digital assistant? Put her to work placing orders for you in your Amazon shopping cart.

You tell Alexa what you want to buy, and she listens and responds. Once you've come to an agreement regarding what you'd like to purchase, she'll do the ordering.

In order to shop with Alexa you’ll need these things:

A device that works with Alexa An Amazon Prime membership A United States shipping address A United States payment method Amazon 1-Click ordering

Choose a Compatible Echo Device

Many of the devices Amazon offers work with voice ordering. These include the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, Echo Show, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, Dash Wand, Amazon Fire TV, and compatible Fire Tablet devices.

You can also use the Amazon app (not the Amazon Alexa app) on any compatible device to search for and add an item to your Amazon shopping cart with your voice. These devices include Apple and Android phones, among others.

Set Up Amazon for Alexa

If you have a United States shipping address and already get orders delivered to your home, you’re halfway to ordering with your voice through your Alexa device. All you need to do now is to verify that 1-Click ordering is enabled and that you have a Prime membership.

To verify you have a Prime Membership:

Use a web browser to navigate to www. amazon. com and Log in. Click AccountsAnd Lists >My Account. Click Prime. If you are a Prime member you’ll see your membership information. If not, you can join here.

To verify you have 1-Click ordering enabled:

Use a web browser to navigate to www. amazon. com and Log in. Click Payment Options. Click 1-Click Settings. If 1-Click is not enabled, Enable it.

Set Up Alexa for Shopping

Before you can shop with Alexa you have to set up your device. To do this you’ll need to install the Amazon Alexa app from either the App Store or Google Play. You can also access the app features on a computer from https://alexa. amazon. com.

The Alexa app downloads automatically to Alexa-enabled Fire tablets. This app is where you configure the settings for Alexa.

Making purchases using your voice is enabled by default, but it’s always good to check and verify this.

To enable the Purchase By Voice option for Alexa:

Open the Amazon Alexa app. Click the Three horizontal lines and then click Settings. Scroll down and tap Voice Purchasing. Under Purchase by Voice, Use the slider to Enable the option.

If you want to prevent unauthorized purchases by children or other family members, you should also create a code (PIN). Although all users can talk to Alexa, they won’t be able to make purchases if they can’t also recite the code. To create a code, continuing from the previous steps:

Under Voice Code, use the slider to Enable the option. Click the Box beside Voice Code to assign a PIN and click Save.

Create Your Alexa Shopping List

When you’re ready to make a purchase using your Amazon device, say something like “Alexa, order paper towels.” If you’re using an Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Plus, or some other device that doesn’t have a screen, you’ll need to listen to Alexa to see what she offers. If you have an Echo Show as is shown here, she’ll show a picture of the item on the screen. You can then tap “Buy This” or order it.

If you’ve previously ordered that particular product, she’ll suggest you reorder it. As you can see here, Amazon keeps track of past orders and makes it easy to buy items again. If you haven’t previously purchased an item, she’ll likely tell you about current Alexa deals or the items deemed “Amazon’s Choice”.

The latter are items that Amazon has specifically chosen and marked as a good product for a good price. Likewise, you can ask “Alexa, what’s Amazon’s choice for paper towels?” Whatever the case, you aren’t happy with what she offers, you’ll be given the option to have her list more items.

When Alexa asks if you’re ready to make the purchase, simply say “Yes.” The item will be placed in your Amazon cart. If you’ve set up a PIN you’ll be asked to state that before the order will be placed and processed through Amazon checkout.

Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet

You can use Alexa on your Fire tablet to ask questions, shop, search, play music, and more. Help for 4th Generation and newer Fire Tablets.

Note: Alexa is available on 4th generation and later Fire tablets. The Alexa app from the Amazon Appstore is a companion app for Alexa-enabled devices. If your Fire tablet is not an Alexa-enabled device, it doesn't support Alexa interactions, even if the Alexa app is downloaded to the device. Some Alexa features and services may also vary by country.

To activate Alexa on your Fire tablet, hold the device Home button until you see a blue line. When you see the blue line, Alexa is ready and you can give a command or ask a question. To learn more about Alexa, see the Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.

Alexa sometimes displays a visual on your Fire tablet’s screen. To dismiss the visual, tap the back button.

If you want to turn the Alexa feature on or off, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Alexa, then tap the switch for Alexa.

Alexa Hands-Free Mode

Note: At this time, only 7th Generation Fire tablets, 8th Generation Fire HD 8 tablets, and Fire 7 (9th Generation) tablets support Alexa hands-free. Your 8th Generation Fire HD 8 tablet must have software version 6.3.0.1 or later for Alexa hands-free to work.

To enable or disable Alexa hands-free, swipe down from the top of your tablet’s Home screen and select the Alexa Hands-Free icon in the quick actions menu. Alternatively, you can select the Settings (gear) icon, then select Alexa, and then toggle Hands-Free Mode on or off.

Note: Fire 7 (7th Generation) and Fire HD 8 (7th Generation) devices support Alexa hands-free only when the device is being used, or when the device is connected to a strong power source.

If you have a PIN or password set on your device, certain Alexa features require you to enter the password or PIN. If you would like to disable Alexa hands-free access when the device is locked:

Swipe down from the top of your tablet’s Home screen, select the Settings (gear) icon. Select Alexa. Select Hands-Free Lock Screen Access.

If you have more than one Alexa-enabled device registered to your Amazon account or Household using the same wake word, Alexa responds intelligently from the closest device. If you would like your Fire tablet to respond less frequently when it senses another Echo device nearby:

Swipe down from the top of your tablet’s Home screen, and select the Settings (gear) icon Select Alexa Select Tablet ESP Behavior Additionally, if you have an Amazon branded cover or case, you can close the cover to prevent Alexa responses.

Note: At this time, the following devices support Show Mode:

7th Generation Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 devices with software version 5.6.3.0 or later 8th Generation Fire HD 8 devices with software version 6.3.0.1 or later

7th Generation Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10 tablets, and 8th Generation Fire HD 8 tablets support full screen visual responses to many Alexa hands free requests with a feature called Show Mode. To enable Show Mode, swipe down from the top of your tablet’s home screen and tap the Show Mode switch. Alternatively, you can say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.” To disable Show Mode, swipe down from the top of the screen and toggle the switch for Show Mode to “off.” Alternatively, you can say “Alexa, exit Show Mode.”

If you have a Show Mode Charging dock, place your Fire tablet in the dock to switch to Show Mode automatically. To exit Show Mode, remove your device from the dock. Make sure that Automatic Mode Switching is enabled by opening the Settings menu, then selecting Show Mode and toggle the Automatic Mode Switching setting to "on".

Using the Alexa App

You can manage settings for some Alexa features using our free Alexa app for Fire OS, Android, iOS, and supported desktop web browsers (available at https://alexa. amazon. co. uk/ ).

Your Alexa-enabled Fire tablet should already have the Alexa app installed. You can find it with your other apps on the Home screen by swiping up.

Alexa Calling and Messaging with the Alexa App

Alexa Calling and Messaging is a service that provides calling and messaging between supported Echo devices or Fire tablets with the Alexa app.

Announcements - You can ask Alexa to make announcements on all compatible Alexa enabled devices, or Fire tablets using Show Mode, on your account; like a one-way intercom.

Drop In - Drop In is an optional feature that helps you to instantly connect, hands free, to all compatible Alexa enabled devices, or Fire tablets using Show Mode, in your home. When you enable Drop In and grant permission to your devices, it applies to your household members. If you have more than two devices, you can specify the device you want to connect with by name.

To manage your Alexa Calling and Messaging settings, visit Settings, select Alexa, and then select Communication. From here, you can turn Drop In on or off, or you can turn Calling and Messaging on or off.

To activate Drop In, say “Drop in on Home,” and Alexa lists the devices that are in your home.

Shopping with Alexa

Amazon Prime members with a U. K. billing address and their 1-Click payment method set up can use Alexa to shop on Amazon.

You can say things like “Order [item name],” “Reorder [item name],” or “Add [item name] to my cart.”

When you place an order using Voice Purchasing, Alexa completes the transaction using the default 1-Click payment method in Your Account. Orders you place for physical products using Alexa Voice Purchasing are also eligible for free returns.

You can disable Voice Purchasing or require a four-digit speakable confirmation code in the Alexa app or from a web browser on your computer. If you want to configure Voice Purchasing settings, follow these steps:

Open the Alexa app or go to https://alexa. amazon. co. uk/ on your computer, and then open the left navigation menu. Select Settings, then Voice Purchasing. Use the Purchase by voice switch to turn Voice Purchasing on or off.

If you'd like to require a four-digit confirmation code for your purchases, enter the code into the field, and then select Save Changes. When you enable a confirmation code, Alexa asks you to say it before completing a purchase.

Listen to Music and Media with Alexa

You can use Alexa to stream music, podcasts, and more from popular streaming services.

You can say things like "Play some music” or "Play the song, [song name]" or “Play some [genre name] music.”

You can also say things like "Read [title]" or "Play the book, [title]."

Alexa will not show the text of a book on-screen or activate immersion reading when reading a book.

If you ask Alexa to play music or read a book, player controls appear on the screen. The audio will continue to play after you’ve dismissed the visual. If you want to stop the music or pause the book, you can see the player controls again by swiping down from the top of the screen. You can also tell Alexa "Pause" or "Resume."

You can also adjust the device volume. Say "Volume up" or "Volume down."

Ask Alexa a Question

Alexa can answer a variety of questions about people, geography, dates, music, sports, and more. Alexa can also spell, define words, complete conversions, and make simple calculations.

You can ask Alexa questions like “Who is [name]?” "When is [holiday]?" or "What is the definition of [word]?" and much more.

News, Weather & Traffic

Alexa can give you updates on the news, weather, and traffic. To check your weather, you need to add your address to the Alexa app. To check traffic, first set your starting point and destination in the Alexa app.

You can say things like “What’s new?” “What’s the weather?” or “How is traffic?”

Update Calendar, Create Lists, and Set Alarms and Timers

Currently, Alexa supports Google Calendar accounts. After you link your calendar in the Alexa app, you can ask Alexa to add new events or review upcoming events on your calendar.

To set an alarm or timer, you can say things like “Set an alarm for 7:30 a. m.” or “Set a timer for 10 minutes.” Using the Alexa app, you can manage the alarms and timers you have already set, but to create a new alarm or timer, you must use a voice command.

You can manage lists with Alexa to note important tasks and items to purchase.

Change your Wake Word

On your Fire tablet, you can set your Wake Word to “Alexa” or “Amazon”.

To change your Wake Word, make sure that Alexa Hands-Free is enabled, then:

Swipe down from the top of your tablet’s Home screen, select the Settings (gear) icon. Select Alexa. Select Wake Word and choose the wake word you'd like to use.

Smart phones, smart cars, smart watches and what not! We live in a world where it’s all about getting smart. So today Amazon announces the upgrade of Alexa and now Alexa will help you buy millions of products from Amazon. Before you get into details, let’s have a look at the past.

Almost a year earlier, Amazon launched it’s super cool virtual assistant device Amazon Echo. Many people wondered how different it’s going to be from one of those virtual assistants we have on our iPhones or Androids. Now after a year, many customers who use Echo claims it has so far been an excellent thing. The first and foremost thing it did is, it changed people perception in virtual assistants.

The cloud inside Echo called Alexa is on a progressive timeline and has updated many a time in past year with more and more new, exciting features. Alexa is capable of playing music. It can play the news. Alexa is also compliant with a lot of smart home appliances. For instance, it works amazingly with my Philips Hue smart light bulbs. That’s not it! Alexa supports a lot of devices like a smart thermostat. It has the potential of being your smart home hub.

Over the year since its launch Amazon has been continuously adding new skills to Alexa, It now owns more than 500 skills. Alexa can order you a ride from Uber as well as can become your personal pizza ordered at Dominos. Well, there are many other cool things that Alexa can do.

This marks a long way in the virtual assistance space. Looking at Alexa’s performance, Google has recently confirmed the release of it’s new virtual assistant Google Home sometime next year.

With that, Amazon decided to up its game and launched a new update to Alexa. With the latest update, you could order 10 million items from Amazon website just by asking Alexa to do it.

Just tell your echo what do you want, a TV or another Echo maybe.

Alexa previously had limitations of only reordering stuff that someone has purchased before or recommending company-selected electronics like laptops and printers through the service called Amazon’s Choice. All the items that you buy through Alexa now must have the eligibility for Prime, Amazon’s membership service with two-day shipping.

At the moment Amazon developer team are constantly working towards adding more and more products to the list. However at the moment, things you cannot purchase through Alexa, include Amazon Fresh, Amazon Prime Pantry, apparel, shoes, jewelry, watches, Amazon Prime Now and add-on items.

Upon asking if Alexa will be able to order these products outside of Prime, “We’re adding more products every day into that Prime product wheelhouse,” one spokeswoman said. “We really want to see how customers are using it and get their feedback on how it can be improved. We’ll continue to figure out expansion as time goes on.”

But at the moment the speech engineers at Amazon has put in a lot of effort to enable Alexa to understand names of multiple brands etc. This move by Amazon to expand Alexa’s shopping skill set may be the company could be usurping the Dash button, these are physical buttons that are meant to be placed around a home to buy specific items. However, they introduced a bunch of new Dash buttons earlier this week.

We hope Alexa gets better with time and also gets more skills to improve the overall experience. But the competition for Amazon to be on the top of the game would be more and more challenging with the launch of Google Home. Well, if the rumors are right, Apple is also trying to update Siri and launch a mobile free version of it.
