Is Amazon Family (Mom) Worth the Cost of Prime? A Review of Membership Perks
By Laura Inlow - Last Updated January 16, 2019 (This post may contain affiliate links.)
Raising young kiddos is tough, but now you can run your shopping errands from the comfort of your own home – even in your underwear if you like!
Better yet, automate your shopping experience so it literally takes care of itself.
Add in discounts on the products you need regularly to care for your family every month and you have Amazon Family.
Read on to learn more about the service and whether it’s right for you.
What is Amazon Family?
The service formerly known as Amazon Mom became Amazon Family in 2015.
Whereas users were once able to sign up for the service exclusively, today’s version of the program is an exclusive perk for Amazon Prime members.
As of May 2018, the price tag for Amazon Prime is $119/year. It seems like a steep price to pay just to access savings – so consider the whole package (read more details on those perks below) when you decide whether or not it’s worth the investment.
Who can benefit?
Amazon Family is for moms, dads, grandparents and guardians of all sorts – basically, anyone expecting, raising or regularly caring for small children.
Especially if you’re already a Prime subscriber, the program comes at no cost – only adding benefits. Definitely something I wish I would have known about when my preschooler was still in diapers.
If you’re not already a Prime subscriber, you can try it out free for 30 days.
And if you don’t like it – cancel anytime.
Amazon Family Perks
The key perks that come with Amazon Family are:
- *Up to 20% off diapers, baby food and more (*excludes formula and baby wipes, requires minimum 5 subscriptions through Amazon Subscribe & Save) 15% baby registry completion coupon and **free registry welcome box (changes frequently and comes filled with goodies for parents and babies!) Exclusive Amazon Family coupons An email newsletter with parenting tips, product recommendations and exclusive deals
Of course, that doesn’t paint the whole picture.
As an Amazon Prime subscriber, you also enjoy:
- Free unlimited two-day shipping on more than 100 million items Free same day and two-hour delivery (in select areas) Free release date delivery on eligible pre-order items Unlimited access to thousands of movies and TV shows on Prime Instant Video Access to a growing collection of more than 2 million songs with Prime Music Unlimited reading of over 1,000 books, magazines, comics, articles and more with Prime Reading Free game content on Twitch Prime Access to Prime Photos with secure, unlimited storage for you and five others (new – upgraded search to help you find photos fast) Prime Early Access to select lightning deals, 30 minutes earlier than non-subscribers Ability to borrow one free Kindle book each month Discounted access to Amazon FreeTime
How to sign up for Amazon Family
If these perks have you sold on a Prime membership, you can start a 30-day trial or join at www. amazon. com/family (or www. amazon. com/prime).
Scroll down the Amazon Family page and click “Join Prime.”
You’ll need an Amazon account to continue.
If you don’t already have an Amazon account, here’s how to register:
- Step 1: Start at the top of the Amazon Family page, near the product search bar, find where it says “Hello, Sign In.” Click it. Step 2: Click “Start Here” as a new customer. Step 3: Enter your email and name and create a password then click “create your Amazon account.”
Step 5: Amazon will run you through the rest of your account setup, including adding preferred payment methods, and more.
If you already have an account but you’re not logged in, you’ll be prompted to do so.
To join Prime, go to your “Account & Lists” drop down and select “Your Prime Membership.”
Point Club pays influencers for sharing their opinion. Join now and get $5 for free!
If you’re already a Prime subscriber, congratulations! You’re already set to benefit from Amazon Family as one of your perks.
Adjust Your Household Info
Within your Prime account, you can adjust your Amazon Household to include another adult member of your home who can access your free shipping perk, as well as up to four kids – including teens and younger children.
Up to two adults in a Prime household get parental controls over children’s electronic devices (with Amazon FreeTime) when you do this.
If you do add children to your online household, Amazon will give you product and content recommendations based on their ages.
How does Amazon Family work?
Amazon itself has a lot of moving parts.
The site, though well designed and mostly easy to navigate, can be overwhelming.
Here’s a closer look at the Amazon Family section of the site and the services and discounts you can access there.
Subscribe & Save
Subscribe & Save (read my review of Amazon Subscribe & Save here) is the key to unlocking up to 20% off diapers and more with Amazon Family.
All you have to do is set up at least five monthly subscriptions with Subscribe & Save. Quantity and price doesn’t really matter.
Subscriptions are automatic deliveries of your favorite items to your home. They can be set at a quantity and schedule of your choosing, from monthly to every six months. They can be canceled at any time. No commitment is necessary.
Subscribing to five or more products to be delivered to your home monthly can get you 15% off extra savings automatically. Prime members get 20% off diapers, baby food, etc., for doing the same thing, thanks to Amazon Family.
Manage subscriptions
To manage your subscriptions, go to your “Accounts & Lists,” drop down and choose “Your Subscribe & Save.”
To add more, click “Add more subscriptions” to visit the Subscribe & Save store.
Products are listed by category.
They include:
- Baby care Grocery Pet supplies Household Health & wellness Beauty & personal care
You can also search for products if you’re looking for something specific. If you want to see only Prime eligible items, you can refine search results as such in the left column of the page.
Choose a product you’re interested in. Choose your preferred quantity and delivery frequency and click “subscribe now.”
Before each delivery, you’ll get an email reminder showing the price and any applicable discount available. The price may vary slightly from delivery to delivery, depending on what the going price for that particular product is.
In your account, see “your deliveries” for scheduled delivery dates. If you need to skip a certain product one month, just hover over the product and choose “skip.”
If you’d rather edit the subscription to come less frequently, click “edit” and edit the subscription.
Exclusive coupons
As a member of Family, you’ll get access to exclusive coupons.
To see what’s available, click “Amazon Family Coupons” in the left-hand column of the Family webpage.
There are coupons available for:
- Health & personal care Grocery & gourmet Beauty Office & school supplies Automotive Baby Books Electronics Industrial & scientific Kitchen Lawn & garden Movies & TV Pet supplies Sporting goods Tools & home improvement Toys
When you see a coupon you like, click “clip coupon.” Once you’ve collected all your coupons, you can see them from the coupon main page by clicking “recently clipped.”
To use them, just add the appropriate items to your cart, and the discounts will be added at checkout.
Shortcuts to products & deals for families
From the Amazon Family homepage, you’ll find quick links to sections of the shopping website that aren’t necessarily about savings but are geared toward products that you might find useful.
They include sections on children’s books, groceries, and baby and children’s apparel.
Children’s books
From the Amazon Family main page, check out an awesome section on children’s books.
Although this section isn’t really about discounts, it can be hard to find good books for your kids, especially when they’re young and not in school yet.
Amazon does part of the work for you by sorting suggestions for children of every age and stage.
The site also includes lists – including Best Book of the Month, 100 Children’s Books to Read in a Lifetime, Award Winning Books and Best Sellers.
Think dragging yourself to the store to buy groceries on the regular is a struggle?
Try doing it with a little person in tow!
The option to do your grocery shopping online is truly a lifesaver.
Baby and children’s apparel
Clothes shopping is also a breeze with quick links to children’s apparel on Amazon. It’s like they thought of everything!
Articles on parenting
Aside from savings and quick links, Amazon Family offers exclusive content in the form of articles spanning the first trimester of pregnancy to when a child is 6 years old.
Examples include “Embracing Your Kid’s Superhero Identity,” “Plot Twist: Now Your Kiddo Tells the Stories” and “The Building Blocks of Toddler Friendships.” These examples, in particular, are from Parents Magazine.
You can also get these tips and tricks via email when you sign up – that’s completely optional.
Monthly recommendations
Lastly, Amazon Family includes a number of featured deals, new releases, etc., all geared toward the family demographic.
Many online reviewers speak highly of the program.
They say that while finding five monthly subscriptions to set up sounds hard to do, it’s easier than it seems.
After adding diapers and baby food, they recommend filling the three remaining subscriptions with cleaning supplies or other household needs, toiletries and beauty supplies or pet needs.
One regret is that the program is no longer available outside of Prime memberships and that the five items rule is a fairly new adjustment to the program.
Final thoughts
Even with the hike from $99 to $119 for a Prime Membership, for my two cents, the perks make the subscription beyond worth it. Especially if you enjoy online shopping, are a TV cord cutter or music or reading fan, it’s at least worth a 30-day free trial subscription.
While researching the Amazon Family program for this article, I’ve only realized that I’m not utilizing my own Prime membership to the fullest of its capabilities, which is something I plan on changing moving forward.
I missed a chance with my first child to maximize savings on baby supplies, but if there’s a next child, I won’t be missing out on this opportunity. If you can afford the monthly or one-time investment in Prime, I suggest you take advantage as well.
Tell us about your experience with Amazon Family (or Amazon Mom) and how you review the program and the savings it offers.

Have feedback? Can't find your answer in our Help pages?
Content published through Kindle Direct Publishing is held to the high standards customers have come to expect from Amazon. If readers tell us about a problem they've found in your eBook, we'll make sure you know about it and point you in the right direction to get the problem fixed. The information listed here will help you understand the types of quality issues we see most frequently and will give you an idea of what you should be paying close attention to when building your eBook. For details on making books available for Kindle devices and apps, see Amazon Kindle Publishing Guidelines.
Note: Since Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) aims to provide the best possible tools for independent publishers and the best experience for readers, we have a zero tolerance policy for any book content meant to advertise, promote, mislead, or that doesn't accurately represent the contents of the book. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure your book's content, including cover art, metadata, and product description do not result in inaccurate or overwhelming search results, or impair readers' ability to make good buying decisions.
Identifying errors
It's very important to search your eBook for errors before uploading the original file or prior to uploading a new file after fixing problems post-publication. Some errors may cause a book to be considered incomplete or unusable. We refer to these as Critical Issues. Because Critical Issues significantly impact the reading experience, any Critical Issue will result in the book being removed from sale until corrections are made.
Other errors can prevent the reader from understanding the author's intended meaning. We refer to these as Destructive issues. The most common type of errors are Distracting Issues, which briefly remove the reader from the author's world.
The combined impact on the reading experience of a book with excessive Distracting or Destructive Issues can lead to the book being removed from sale until the corrections are made. A moderate amount of Distracting or Destructive Issues can result in the book remaining available for sale, but with a temporary quality warning displayed on the detail page until corrections are made.
Reviewing your eBook
When you review your eBook for quality issues, we highly recommend that you use Kindle Previewer. This free program allows you to see how your file will look on various Kindle devices and apps. If you're using Microsoft Word to format your eBook, check out our step-by-step formatting guide.
Typos are among the most common quality issues customers report. To produce a high quality eBook, please ensure your book is free of typos. Typos may be caused by a variety of issues: mistyped words, poor optical character recognition for scanned texts, copy/pasting across source documents, or multiple conversions of a source file. Here are some examples of common typos to look for:
Numbers in place of letters | 5arasota | Sarasota |
Letters in place of numbers | 1o66 | 1066 |
Incorrect punctuation | The dog ran, | The dog ran |
Soft Hyphens | Re-peat | Repeat |
Missing letter | Nothi g | Nothing |
HTML tags in place of characters | ® | ; ® |
Junk characters | •"gainst | Against |
Preventing and fixing typos
If there's typo in your eBook, it's important to search for the term throughout the text to ensure all occurrences are corrected. It's also important to review your text for errors of a similar nature. The search function of Kindle Previewer can helpf locate all instances of a repeated typo that need to be fixed. Sometimes improper or dialectic spellings are intentionally used by the author. These are not considered errors. Common examples would include character dialogue. Spelling differences between US and British English aren't considered errors.
Metadata issues
Make sure your eBook's metadata doesn't result in inaccurate search results or impair readers' ability to make good buying decisions. Here are common issues with metadata:
- The title, series name, edition, subtitle, volume, or contributor in your file don't match the metadata you entered. The title, series name, edition, subtitle, or volume in the metadata contain a URL, keywords, genre descriptions, promotions, references to other books within the category, or spelling errors.
See our metadata guidelines.
Unsupported characters
If your text appears in Kindle Previewer as strings of jumbled characters or boxed question marks, this usually means your book contains an unsupported accent mark or character. To ensure your book doesn't contain unsupported characters, review your book in Kindle Previewer and look for square boxes or jumbled characters like these:
Preventing and fixing unsupported characters
If an unsupported character is present in your book, it's important to look for this issue throughout the text, as one unsupported character usually indicates others. Use the search function of Kindle Previewer to locate all instances of an unsupported character. Learn more about supported characters. For detailed guidance, see section 3.1 of the Amazon Kindle Publishing Guidelines.
Critical issues
Content uploaded in unsupported languages won't display properly on Kindle devices and will be removed from sale. See the languages we support.
Cover issues
A high quality cover image may have an impact on a reader's decision to purchase an eBook. Here are some of the most common issues with covers:
- The cover either has extra space in the margins or is too large and doesn't fully display The cover image is blurry The cover is missing The cover image is inserted into the manuscript file, causing an error The cover includes references to advertisements or promotions (e. g., "free")
Creating and adding a cover
Check out our guidelines for creating eBook covers. You can also find information in Section 3.2 of the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.
Image quality
Having clear, readable images in your book is an important part of the reader experience. Images with text can be a problem if the source quality is poor, so make sure the text is readable on Kindle by previewing it in Kindle Previewer. Also make sure that the images in your book aren't blurry. It could be annoying for the reader and may impact their understanding of your content for images that require high levels of detail.
Critical issues
Do not make an eBook composed of scanned pages of a physical book. Books that are entire scans will be removed from sale, as they become unreadable on Kindle devices and the reader won't be able to change text size. Manga, comics, children's picture books, etc. are excluded from this requirement. Other quality issues include blurry images and images with illegible text.
Ensuring high-quality images
The best way to ensure your book has clear images is to choose the highest possible quality in your source images. Learn about guidelines and best practices for image formatting. Please see section 3.5 of the Kindle Publishing Guidelines
Formatting issues
Formatting issues may affect the visual or layout level of an eBook and can include problems like extra spacing between paragraphs or forced text justification. Formatting errors in your eBook may prevent readers from customizing their reading experience to their preferences, and also may include issues that cause text flow to be unintelligible or confusing. To produce a high quality book, please ensure your book has proper formatting. For the best reader experience, we recommend uploading your book content in a reflowable file format such as DOC, DOCX, or HTML.
Ensuring correct formatting
An effective way to view your eBook's formatting is to preview it with Kindle Previewer. This tool can help you identify formatting errors before you make it your available for sale. Please see our step-by-step formatting guide for tips on formatting in Microsoft Word. Check your whole manuscript for similar issues because formatting errors tend to occur throughout the book. For example, incorrectly set left or right margins would appear on each page.
Critical Issues
- Body text rendered as bold, italicized, underlined or hyperlinked text Extra body text margin padding that is more than 1/4 of a screen w >
Page numbers entered within the book file break the flow of the reading experience and must be removed.
Here are some examples of other formatting issues:
- Forced alignment of body text The size of the body text is forced, causing it to be larger or smaller than standard text sizes Body text incorrectly changes size
Bullet points missing from a bulleted list A list has bullets which appear on a different line that the list contents Missing list formatting
A best practice is to preserve the reader's customizable reading experience by not forcing formatting for text.
Lists without proper formatting can be unintelligible to the reader.
- Incorrectly added line break Missing indication of paragraph separation (indentation or single line spacing between paragraphs) Missing line break that indicates a section or scene change A hard page break in the m >
All links in your book should navigate correctly to the place where the reader would expect them to go. The reader should also be able to navigate to the locations listed in your book's Go To menu (such as cover image, beginning, and Table of Contents). Please test links, including Go To items, on your Kindle device to ensure the links in your book navigate to their intended places before making your book available for sale. If you don't have access to a device, Kindle Previewer is a helpful tool that will reproduce how content will appear on a device.
Preventing Linking Issues
Broken or incorrect links usually occur when a mistake has been made in the link URL or an incorrect link location has been pasted in. Check the HTML or inserted links in your text to correct this problem. Below are some examples of linking issues we see in books.
- A Go To item link that does not work A link in the Table of Contents (TOC) that does not work A link at the beginning that takes readers to a TOC at the end of the book A link outside the TOC that takes readers to unrelated content at the end of the book A link in the TOC that does not follow the chronological order of content appearing in the book An unlinked footnote A prohibited external link An external link that does not work An internal link (TOC, Navigational Control File from XML (NCX), or other) that does not link to the correct location Reference to an unlinked page number Missing Logical Table of Contents (NCX)
Warning: Unnecessary or confusing hyperlinks, misplaced Tables of Contents (TOCs), or the addition of disruptive content that takes readers away from the main content of your book can result in a poor customer experience. If the formatting of a book results in a poor experience or genuine reader confusion, or is designed to unnaturally inflate sales or pages read, we will take action to remove titles and protect readers. This also includes disruptive or unnecessary enticement to click on elements within TOCs. Continued addition of these types of elements in your titles could affect your account status, up to and including termination.
For more information regarding the Table of Contents and NCX, please see section 5 of the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.
Critical issues
Do not frontload bonus content (e. g., other stories, or previews of other books) at the beginning of a book or use a link that takes readers to the actual book at the end.
A common complaint we get about tables is that part of the table is cut off, which usually happens when tables are used for formatting non-tabular data (e. g., sidebars, lists, large chunks of text, etc.). It's best to avoid using tables to format text or to try to make book elements appear in a certain way.
Critical issues
Any table with content cut off at bottom of screen when viewed at font size 3 (the default). This causes content to be inaccessible for the majority of readers. Other issues we see in eBooks include tables consisting of non-tabular data and tables that require the reader to pan right over non-tabular data. Tables with non-tabular data often force readers to take additional action to be able to read plain text content, for example, a table with forced line breaks or a table with a word in a cell split across two or more lines. If the data absolutely must be displayed in tabular form and you still see the error, try breaking your table into more cells so that there are more available break points. For more information on table guidelines, see section 3.6 in the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.
The Previewer and Kindle for PC will not always reproduce table display very accurately. If possible, make sure to check table formatting on a Kindle device, especially if it appears to be a critical issue.
Duplicated text
This refers to any text which repeats in the book when it is not intended to repeat. Usually this is the result of a copy-paste error and can be fixed by removing the duplicated text.
Critical issues
- A repeated chapter that is also mislabeled
Other duplicate text issues include:
- A repeated chapter A portion of text that is repeated within a chapter or section, excluding single words
Missing content
Missing content issues occur when some intended part of the book is either mistakenly removed or includes references to a portion of the book that isn't included in the book.
Critical Issues
- More text is missing than just a short phrase Missing image section that the product description or the contents of the book indicate should be included Main book content that is only accessible through external links Product description indicates book includes CD, DVD or other ancillary content that is not accessible Missing or unplayable audio/video content in a Kindle Enhanced with Audio and Video
Other missing content issues include:
- A short missing phrase A missing image
If you are experiencing missing images and provided your book in Word format, especially with the fill-in camera icon, please see the following excerpt from Building your Book for Kindle for a common path to fix the issue:
Useful image formatting tip: Avoid pasting in images
Images should be inserted in JPEG (or. jpg) format with center alignment (don't copy and paste from another source).
- Click "Insert" at the top of the screen in Word Click "Picture", which brings up a dialogue screen to locate the picture that will be inserted in the document In the dialogue screen, locate and select the file
Wrong content
Books with wrong content are always removed from sale. Wrong content occurs when a customer receives something other than what is advertised. This is most commonly caused by uploading an incorrect file, but can sometimes also occur if updates are made to the product information or copy/paste issues make the description incorrect. The easiest way to fix it is to upload the latest version of the correct file.
Content unsuited for reading on Kindle
Books that are not suited for Kindle are removed from sale.
Some books are simply not well suited to the Kindle format. These include any kind of book where the main purpose is to allow the reader to write or color on the pages. These books are better suited to publishing in a physical form.
Examples of books not suited to the Kindle format include the following:
- Puzzle books Blank Journals Pattern books Coloring books Facing page translations (left page in one language, right page is same content in another language)
Disappointing content
We do not allow content that disappoints our customers or creates a poor shopping experience, including but not limited to:
- Content that is either marketed as a subscription or redirects readers to an external source to obtain the full content Content that is freely available on the web (unless you are the copyright owner of that content or the content is in the public domain). For more information, you can refer to the sections titled "Illegal and Infringing Content" and "Public Domain and Other Non-Exclusive Content" in the Content Guidelines. Content whose primary purpose is to solicit or advertise Content that is not significantly different from content in another book available in the Kindle Store Content that is too short Content that is poorly translated Content that does not provide an enjoyable reading experience Bonus content that appears before a book's primary content Content that is excessively reused, recycled, or repeated within or across books Content that is rebranded or re-released with significant changes to the metadata, resulting in a confusing reader experience
Companion Guides
Companion guides, or books that are based on a different original work (including summaries, study guides, or analyses), that confuse our customers are not allowed. To ensure that customers don’t confuse your work with the original source material, we ask that books of this type meet the following criteria:
The title must begin with "Summary", "Study guide", or "Analysis" (for example, Summary and Analysis of Pride and Prejudice). The cover image must prominently indicate the content is a summary, study guide, or analysis before the title of the original book in a font that is at least as large as the rest of the title, and cannot resemble or echo the original work in any way. The contributor(s) of the original book must not appear in the contributor field. The content must be categorized in the Study Aid category (for example, Study Aid | Book Notes). The content cannot be included in any category outside of the Study Aid category.
We do not allow companion guides based on copyrighted works to be published outside the U. S. without written permission from the copyright holder.
Multi-work books
If you're publishing multiple stories as one book, ensure the contents of your book are accurately reflected both in the title field and on the cover, by including terms such as "Boxed Set," "Bundle," "Collection," "Compilation," or "Series." Stories that are part of a series must be in sequential order within a book and collections of individual stories must have all stories listed in the metadata.
Collections of works and numbered series may include content you've previously published in your catalog. However, in order to provide an optimal customer experience, the same content may not be excessively reutilized across multiple books. We consider "excessive" any amount of content repetition that would create a poor shopping or reading experience.
Frequently asked questions
General questions
- Reach millions of additional customers: Amazon’s European marketplaces help you sell across 26 countries. Don’t miss out on tens of millions of new customers. Diversify your revenue stream:Strengthen your cash flow. Protect yourself from sales fluctuations on Amazon. com and take advantage of European holiday seasons and peak sales periods. Let Amazon handle the details: Leverage our state-of-the-art logistics, powerful tools, and world-class customer service to simplify international selling, so you can concentrate on expanding your business. Be among the first: Compared with the US, Amazon’s European marketplaces often have fewer sellers in your category, meaning more opportunity for you. Get first-mover advantage by being one of the first sellers in your category.
- We usually recommend that sellers offer all their eligible US selection in Europe. With Amazon’s Build International Listings (BIL) tool, it’s easy to add your US listings across Europe, get them translated, and set pricing rules. However, you’ll need to make sure that you have the appropriate distribution rights and that your products are compliant with local European regulations. For example, a US plug won’t work in all EU countries. If you plan to use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) to fulfill in Europe, you may want to start with a “wide and thin” approach. Start with your full catalog but just a few units per ASIN to see what sells. Then, once you identify your top-selling products, you can send in larger replenishment shipments. Get more guidance on product details in the marketplace entry strategy section.
- Choose where to begin based on your business’sspecific situation, taking into consideration your product category, distribution rights, resources, and other factors. Many sellers have successfully launched immediately across all five of Amazon’s European marketplaces. Amazon tools and services, like Build International Listings (BIL) and Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) services in Europe, make selling across all European marketplaces much simpler. Of course, if you’re not comfortable selling across all five marketplaces yet, or if your distribution rights don’t cover all marketplaces, you can start with one or just a few of them. Many sellers expanding to Europe from the US marketplace start in the UK, since both marketplace languages are English. (Note: Consider differences in British English versus American English.) A common initial entry strategy involves sending inventory to a UK fulfillment center. Then, you can use the BIL tool to translate and synchronize your listings to start selling in the remaining marketplaces, using Amazon’s European Fulfillment Network (EFN), which will automatically fulfill orders across all five marketplaces using your single source of inventory in the UK. When you’re ready, you can then explore other fulfillment options, such as Multi-Country Inventory and Pan-European FBA.
- Amazon has designed its marketplaces worldwide so that the process of selling is consistent and similar, no matter where you’re selling. Many services and processes that you’re familiar with in the US, such as Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Prime, and Sponsored Products, work similarly on Amazon’s European marketplaces. However, due to differences in regulation, culture, and language, each marketplace has unique differences. Here are some of the main ones to consider: Taxes: Every European country has tax requirements for sales of products to consumers. For more information, see “What’s value-added tax (VAT), and what do I need to know about it?” Product compliance: When you select an Amazon marketplace in which to sell, you’ll need to understand whether your product is appropriate for that country. First and foremost, make sure you comply with all laws in each country. In addition, product standards differ across countries. For example, electronic devices operating on 110–220 volts that use two-prong electrical chargers may not be appropriate for European marketplaces. For more information, see “What European regulations do I need to consider?” Languages: Amazon requires that listings and customer support be provided in a marketplace’s local language. For more information, see “Are there any language requirements for selling in Europe?”
- The FBA Export program on Amazon. com allows customers from around the world—including Europe—to buy your products on the US marketplace. However, European customers are more likely to shop on their local European Amazon marketplaces because they’re in their local languages and offers faster delivery. There is also an FBA Export program for the EU, so that when you sell on Amazon’s European marketplaces, Amazon will export your eligible products to buyers with postal addresses in 26 European countries. Learn how to sign up for FBA Export for EU.
- Getting started selling in a new geographic region such as Europe is a serious undertaking. However, for many sellers, the initial time they invest in researching and handling requirements can pay off in sales to millions of additional customers. Amazon provides a variety of tools and services that simplify launching in Europe. Just like when you started selling in the US, your success in Europe will vary based on factors unique to your business, including product category, margins, and regulatory requirements. It’s important to take the time early in the process to fully consider all the pros and cons involved in selling in a new marketplace. Our guide to crafting a marketplace entry strategy can help.
Requirements
- Decide where and what to sell, including considering local tax and regulatory requirements. Register an account and list your products. Ship your goods and fulfill orders. Manage your business, including customer support and returns.
- When you import goods into the EU, you’ll need to comply with EU customs laws, as well as laws and regulations that are applicable to the EU country of import. If you store or sell goods to customers in an EU country, you may be required to register for VAT in that country. While each Amazon seller is solely responsible for being VAT compliant, Amazon can provide resources and tools for your VAT registrations and filings in EU countries. The time it takes to become VAT registered can vary. To avoid delays, we recommend that you start the process as soon as you register your EU seller account. For more information, visit Amazon’s VAT Knowledge Center and learn about VAT Services on Amazon.
- When you import goods into the EU, you’ll need to comply with EU customs laws, as well as laws and regulations that are applicable to the EU country of import. European regulatory considerations:
When you import goods into the European Union (EU), you will need to comply with EU customs laws, as well as laws and regulations that are applicable to the EU country of import. Please note that you are not authorized to import your goods in the name of Amazon EU S. à r. l. or any other Amazon subsidiary or affiliate (indistinctly referred to as "Amazon" and its corporate name as an "Amazon name") or to reference Amazon anywhere in your shipping documentation. Otherwise, your shipments may be returned to their origin, abandoned, or destroyed at your cost, at the discretion of the carrier or freight forwarder carrying your goods.
Importation regulations may differ between countries in the EU and will depend on the mode of shipping you choose. Therefore, you should strongly consider hiring a logistics provider, such as a customs broker or freight forwarder, to handle the importation process for your company and help you understand all applicable requirements.
Commercial invoice
When your goods are ready to be shipped from your facility, manufacturer, or distributor, the shipper prepares the commercial invoice. It is critical that the commercial invoice be accurate to avoid delays in clearing customs. The following information must be included on the commercial invoice when importing goods into an EU country:
- Invoice issue date. The complete name and address of the exporter or shipper (seller or manufacturer). The shipper's contact name, company name, address, and tax ID number. Ship-to address. Provide the legal name of your company, followed by "c/o FBA." Below this, you may use the address of the Amazon fulfillment center to which your goods should be delivered. Amazon does not, however, authorize you to include any Amazon name in this address. Please see the example below. Importer of record: Provide the legal name of your company or EU import representative, along with full contact details, Economic Operators' Registration and Identification number (EORI) and VAT registration number for the country of import (example below). Prior to shipping, you should consider ensuring that your company or representative can fulfill all criteria to act as importer of record in the country of import.
Amazon expressly prohibits the use of an Amazon name, including a fulfillment center's name, as the importer of record for any shipment of FBA inventory. Any FBA inventory shipment attempting to make entry with an Amazon name as the importer of record will be refused and returned at the shipper's expense—no exceptions.
Leaving this information blank also can result in your shipment being refused and returned.
- FBA Shipment >
- Harmonized Tariff Schedule Code (HTS Code) Product quantity Value of each product. For samples or products with no commercial value, a nominal or fair-market value must be stated for customs purposes Total value of all products in a shipment
Additional information may also be required. These requirements are subject to change. It is your responsibility to determine and comply with import requirements.
Depending on the type of product, there may be additional certificates and licenses required for import. These can include a Declaration of Conformity, test reports, or leather certificates.
Please note that the document requirements listed above are in addition to the system-generated document requirements specified in the Shipment Creation Workflow.
Please check with your logistics provider or customs broker to ensure that you have the complete documentation needed to import into the EU destination country.
Shipping best practices
Amazon fulfillment centers have requirements for the shipments they receive, including the size of the pallets and the type of truck that can deliver to the fulfillment center. The How to Ship Inventory to Amazon guidelines provide information needed for preparing your shipment to an Amazon fulfillment center. Paying attention to these requirements and best practices will help avoid delays in getting your inventory to the fulfillment center and into your customers' hands.
Using standard postal services
Using postal services such as China Post, Royal Mail, Parcelforce, and Deutsche Post to send your shipments to Amazon fulfillment centers is not recommended. Postal services may have different importer of record requirements for their shipments than for freight or express carrier shipments. It is possible that by using postal services to ship your goods, you could not ship to an Amazon fulfillment center as the IOR. If you are considering a postal service as a shipping option, you should consider sending the shipment to the address of your representative in the country of import and, after the shipment is delivered, forward the goods to the Amazon fulfillment center address. Prior to shipping, you may want to check with the postal service that your company or representative can be the importer of record.
For additional information regarding FBA imports and exports, please read the Importing and Exporting Inventory section.
You should ensure that you have all intellectual property rights (such as patents, trademarks, or copyrights) necessary for listing your products in Europe or selling them cross-border within Europe. You may need to have the permission of the brand owner to sell their products in a given European member state in order to avoid an infringement of intellectual property rights (as in the case where your license to the intellectual property is only valid for a specific country). In particular, your products must not be counterfeit or illegal parallel imports.
You should investigate the law governing intellectual property for every country where you want to list your products because your rights in intellectual property may only be valid for a particular country.
In addition, you may want to protect your own intellectual property in Europe.
Trademark owners may be able use their trademark rights to prevent resale in the European Economic Area (EEA) of genuine branded goods sourced from outside the EEA 2, even if the non-EEA seller has purchased the goods outside the EEA from an authorized distributor or the trademark owner.
However, the trademark owner’s rights may generally be “exhausted” (for instance, the trademark owner can no longer rely on its trademark rights) in respect of goods placed within the EEA by the trademark owner or with the trademark owner’s "consent."
The "consent" must in principle relate to each individual product imported and sold in the EEA. Trademark rights may therefore generally not be exhausted simply by the proprietor having consented to the sale of other, identical branded goods within the EEA.
Even when the goods have been placed in the EEA by the trademark owner or with the trademark owner’s consent, the trademark owner may have "legitimate reasons" for objecting to the resale of the branded goods.
Situations that may qualify as “legitimate reasons” include, but may not be limited to any of the following:
- The branded goods have been altered by the reseller. All Professional sellers. The branded goods have been repackaged by the reseller. The reseller’s advertising of the goods in some way denigrates the goods or the trademark.
The “CE” mark is a mandatory conformance mark on many products (such as low-voltage equipment, medical devices, toys, personal protective equipment, and so on). By attaching the “CE” marking, the manufacturer declares that the product is in conformity with the requirements of the applicable European directives.
There are many other marks and labels in Europe (for example, textiles, products in contact with food, recycling, and so on), which you may be required to display on your products or packaging. Often product labeling is required to be in the language of the European member state where the product is sold.
Chemicals – REACH/CLP
REACH is the European regulation on chemicals and their safe use. It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances. Under the REACH regulation, one of the things manufacturers and importers may be required to do is to gather certain information on the properties of the chemical substances in their products, and to register the information in a central database run by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
In addition to REACH, the Regulation for Classification, Labeling, and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP Regulation) may apply to your products. The CLP Regulation incorporates the classification criteria and labeling rules agreed at the United Nations level, the so-called Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). GHS is based on the principle that the same hazards should be described and labeled in the same way all around the world.
Electrical and electronical equipment – WEEE / RoHS
If you are selling electrical or electronic equipment, you may be subject to the European legislation concerning Restrictions of the Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and/or the collection and recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
The following are examples of requirements in the WEEE regulations that you may be subject to:
- Displaying the “crossed-out wheeled bin” symbol on your products. The symbol indicates that the product should not be disposed of as normal waste, but rather in specific recycling centers. Joining an authorized WEEE collection and recycling scheme in any European member state in which you sell applicable products.
Batteries
If you sell batteries or products that contain batteries, you may be subject to the Battery Directive. The Battery Directive imposes specific obligations on producers and distributors of batteries.
The following are examples of requirements you may be subject to:
- Displaying the “crossed-out wheeled bin” symbol on your batteries. The symbol indicates that the battery should not be disposed of as normal waste, but rather in specific recycling centers. Joining an authorized battery collection and recycling scheme in any European member state in which you sell your batteries.
Packaging and packaging waste
Packaged products you sell in Europe must comply with the European Packaging and Packaging Waste regulations.
The following are examples of requirements you may be subject to:
- Joining an authorized packaging collection and recycling scheme in any European member state in which you sell your products. Displaying recycling symbols on your packaging (for example, the “green dot” symbol).
Plugs and voltage
Countries in Europe use different types of plugs—for instance, the U. K. 3-pin rectangular plug and the continental European 2-pin round plug. In addition, products you import into Europe might work on a different voltage.
Please ensure that you comply with the regulations on plugs and voltage in any European member state in which you list your products. In particular, your customers should be able to safely use your products. For more information regarding what plugs and sockets are accepted in EU fulfillment centers, visit the Electrical Goods Requirements: Plugs and Sockets help page (Seller Central Europe account required).
Toys
The European Toys Safety Directive requires, among others things, that it must be possible to use a toy without any danger to one’s health or safety during the toy’s foreseeable and normal period of use. You may also be required to place warnings on the products that specify the appropriate conditions and limitations of use.
Medical devices
Medical devices range from simple products like bandages to the most sophisticated life-supporting products. If your product is considered a medical device, you may be subject to the European Medical Devices Directive. The Directive requires, among other things, that medical devices shall not compromise the safety and health of patients, or users and other persons when properly implanted, maintained, and used.
Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics
Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics are subject to various regulations in Europe, including special labeling and packaging requirements. The regulations are only partially harmonized. For example, a product may be sold over-the-counter in some European member states, while in others it may only be legally sold in pharmacies.
Food
Food and food products are subject to many regulations in Europe. European food regulations in particular aim at establishing high-quality standards for food and food product hygiene, animal health and welfare, and plant health, and prevent the risk of contamination from external substances.
European food regulations include, among many other things, the following:
- Specifying rules on appropriate labeling for food products. Often product labeling is required to be in the language of the European member state where the product is sold. Establishing mandatory refund and recycling schemes for beverage packaging in several European member states.
Please note that these consumer rights are described for illustrative purposes only and do not constitute any legal advice or substitute for any contractual obligation that you may have agreed upon with Amazon or directly with the consumer. To learn more about rules that apply to international sellers, check out Global Selling International Seller Rules here.
Rights of cancelation
With some exceptions, consumers in the European Union have the right to cancel a purchase of a product bought online within 14 days of receiving the final item of the order, if they purchased multiple items together that were delivered separately. Even when there is no error from your side, you must refund the item and the shipping costs. You may not have to refund all costs unless one of the following is true:
There is an error on your side. You agreed to bear all costs for the consumer. You failed to disclose or inform the customer about the costs that you are legally required to disclose.
For example, you must refund the normal cost of sending the item to the consumer but not any extra costs for services that the customer chooses, such as expedited delivery or gift-wrapping. Similarly, when you expressly inform the consumer, you don't have to bear the cost of returning the product to you.
Please note that these consumer rights are in addition to any contractual return rights that you may have agreed upon with Amazon (e. g. 30-day return guarantee) or directly with the consumer.
Legal warranty
In the EU, you are required by law to give customers a warranty stating that the products you sell are free from faults and are as advertised (i. e., conformant with the contract). Standards exist to assess when products do not conform to the contract. If the products do not conform, customers can request a free repair, replacement, or refund following a sale. The warranty period will vary depending on the country. Most EU countries provide for a minimum period of two years from the date the customer received the product. The United Kingdom, however, requires a "reasonable time" following the sale that will vary depending on the product and its value.
The period during which you can receive a warranty-related claim from a customer also varies by country. For example, parties to a contract in England and Wales have up to six years to bring a claim from the date on which their rights were infringed; a customer thus may claim that a product is faulty six years after receiving it.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon. com
The debate over whether he is punk or new wave is long over; today Elvis Costello is less likely to be found on a list with Strummer and Scabies than he is with Bacharach and David and Jimmy Webb. Lauded initially for his energetic and literate attacks on the social ills of Thatcher's England, he has become a peerless master of the popular song. The evolution of Costello's craft as a songwriter and performer, from the early high-octane polemics, through his stylistic experiments with country and soul, and on to standards written for others, is splendidly documented on this elegant two-disc set. Chronology is ignored in favor of a thoughtful program that catalogs the jewels from his prolific output and a sprinkling of covers that demonstrate the maturing of his singing voice. The 42 tracks here lean generously to the first 10 years with the Attractions, but also collects the best of his subsequent collaborations with the cream of America's session musicians and on through to "She," his contribution to the soundtrack of 1999's Notting Hill. --Rob Stewart

The good times and the bad. , August 30, 2001
Reviewer: Joe Lee (see more about me) from Brandon, MS USA |
Like Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello has been a musical chameleon. This isn't lost on Rhino Records, who issued this compilation--check out the photos of Elvis on the back of the jewel box. There's no doubt he's plenty talented--he has gone from East Coast New Wave in the late 1970's to Burt Bacharach-written torch ballads in the late 1990's and covered everything else in between.
Maybe there's too much music here (42 tracks), and previous Costello collections indeed short-changed him. But after the first ten tracks or so on Disc One--which cover the cream of his new wave years and are all great--Costello veers all over the road, trying out country before edging back toward many kinds of pop. Occasionally he caught fire--"Everyday I Write The Book" is a catchy song with just the right Costello lyrical bite, and it was a deserved pop hit. The story of "Veronica" is made plain in the video, but it's still a powerfully emotional song. But the second disc is a mess--too little focus as he apparently grew bored with each incarnation. The last tracks on that disc are from the Bacharach collection, and they're very good. It takes a lot of patience to reach them, however.

Truly the Essential Elvis!, June 23, 2001
Reviewer: Lise Alper (see more about me) from Englewood, CO United States |
I have owned quite a number of Elvis Costello anthology albums. The first was back in the late 80's, a "Greatest Hits" LP put out by CBS/Columbia. In 91 I purchased "Girls, Girls, Girls" a triple CD collection, & recently found a budget priced cassette called "Extreme Honey: the Best of the Warner Bros. Years". Each of these had songs I liked, but often contained more that I didn't.
Now I have purchased "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" & for once I can say this album absolutely lives up to it's title! In 2 CD's we have an overview of the extraordinary career of one of the most prolific & multi-faceted songwriters of our time. It's wonderful! Everything is here, from the chilling "Watching the Detectives" & supersonic "Lipstick Vogue" of the early albums thru the jazz & country-tinged experiments of the late 80's up to his latest collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet & Burt Bacharach. There isn't a single song that tempts me to hit the "forward" button on my CD player.
Curiously, Rhino has opted to put the material in a non-sequential order. Most greatest hits collections start with the earliest songs, working their way up to the latest. "The Very Best of. " was organized by someone who had their mind on creating an emotional mood rather than a history of the artist. Although normally I prefer the time-line approach, in this casse it works quite well. If you want to hear the developement of Costello's song-writing, Rhino has included original release dates in the credits so that you can sequence your own order. Other than song titles & lists of musicians, this is about all the information you will discover inside the jewel case. This is about the only weakness I can find to this package. Personally I would have preferred some type of liner notes included.
If you only own 1 Elvis Costello album, make it "The Very Best of. " . I guarantee you won't regret it!

You dimwits got the preview songs wrong, July 1, 2003
Reviewer: A music fan from Auburn, AL USA |
The sample songs are lined up wrong. When you click on the first song on disc 1 you hear the first song on disc 2.
Elvis Costello is great (his early stuff). This is a great disc with many of his best songs, but it is hard to imagine him in his early form not savaging a company like [amazon. com] for making the dumb mistake you all made.
Will you ever catch it? I'll be watching.

Power Pop Music, October 24, 2002
Reviewer: jbembe (see more about me) from Dallas, Tx United States |
Prior to owning this album, the only Elvis Costello I was familiar with was the best of the warner years disc. I enjoyed that alot, but my interest in Costello as a musician was more peripheral. After buying this best of, his music simply jumps out at me! Smart, clever, creative, fun, thoughtful, this music is extremely fun and captivating such that it makes you want to understand what he's talking about. Get this disc, and discover great pop music.

Lovely collection, April 18, 2002
Reviewer: Jim Gibson from Apple Valley, MN USA |
In one of her last interviews, the late movie critic Pauline Kael expressed her admiration for Elvis Costello.
It's not hard to see why. Elvis Costello's music often reminds me of Jean-Luc Godard's earlier movies
(which Kael also admired); romantic, skeptical, political, philosophical all at the same time.
There's an intelligence to Costello's music and lyrics that has always lifted him above most other rock performers.
After 25 years, the song 'Alison' can still give me goosebumps.

Basically, THE Perfect Compilation Disk, January 14, 2002
Reviewer: T Spencer Medvick (see more about me) from Richfield, OH USA |
This is an exceptional album, it may be the best compilation disk I have ever heard, over it's two disks it:
1. Provides an excellant cross section of Elvis' career
2. Keeps the listener interested by the mix of sounds
3. Doesn't have a "clunker"
4. Provides something hard to find elsewhere ("She")
5. Does not give everything away, there are omissions here that make me go back to the original albums
As an introduction to Elvis or for the obsessed fan, this album is essential.
