Our Top Picks

Best Controller: Wii Remote Plus

A great feature of the Wii U is that not only is it backward compatible with the original Wii games and accessories, but you can also use those same accessories, such as the Wii Remote Plus, to play many Wii U games as well. This is particularly useful for multiplayer games, as it gives you a fairly inexpensive option to ensure everyone has a controller without breaking the bank. There are many third-party Wii remotes available, but we greatly prefer the official Nintendo Wii Remote Plus due to its superior durability, guaranteed compatibility, and overall better accuracy and performance compared to third-party remotes. Nintendo’s official Wii Remote Plus comes in a number of different color options as well, which is helpful to ensure everyone can keep track of their favorite remote in frantic multiplayer sessions.

Best Third-Party Controller: NEXiLUX Wireless 3-In-1 Pro

The Wii U Pro Controller is undeniably fantastic, but the lack of compatibility with original Wii games is a bit of a let down. Enter the Wireless 3-In-1 Pro Controller from NEXiLUX. This controller gives you the same shape and button layout as Nintendo’s Pro Controller, but has some extra features as well. First, it works with all compatible (as in they use the Classic or Pro controller) Wii U and Wii games, as well as every game on both versions the Virtual Console. It also has a Wii Remote mode where it can mimic the motion controls of a Wii Remote Plus, which makes navigating the Wii or Wii U dashboard a breeze. Despite being a third-party controller and all of the caveats that naturally comes with, it really is an incredibly convenient controller to have around and is well worth the investment.

Best Microphone: Wii U Microphone

For Nintendo Wii U microphones, it doesn’t get any better than Nintendo’s official Wii U Microphone, made specifically for the console itself. The Nintendo’s Wii U Microphone is a quality build mic that allows you to utilize all of the system’s singing and voice-enabled games.

The Nintendo Wii U Microphone works best with games like SiNG Party and The Voice. It’s the most compatible mic for the Nintendo Wii U console on the market, making for an easy connection with the Nintendo Wii U system. This is a great overall mic for its affordable price point, ease of set up and powerful audio pickup quality.

Most Affordable Controller: PowerLead Wireless Controller Gamepad

You shouldn’t have to pay a fortune to have a decent quality controller and play with your friends and family on your Nintendo Wii U – that’s where the PowerLead Wireless Controller Gamepad comes in. A first party Nintendo Wii U controller will run you over $70, but the PowerLead is no more than $20 and doesn’t skip on quality control.

The PowerLead Wireless Controller Gamepad operates and is designed exactly like a Nintendo Wii U controller. It’s built with an ergonomic and comfortable design that has an easy learning curve once you pick it up. It’s compatible with your Nintendo Wii U system and connects wireless with Bluetooth through an easy sync process. The PowerLead comes with a 12-month warranty too, just in case anything goes wrong.

Best Headset: Gioteck HS-1 Superlite Stereo Headset

You won’t find many complementing and slick headsets made specifically for the Nintendo Wii U, but the Gioteck HS-1 Superlite Stereo Headset does it. Its minimal and sleek design complements the Wii U in style, and is durable enough to last you long. You don’t have to spend a fortune either with its affordable price tag of under $25.

Lightweight and comfortable, the Gioteck HS-1 Superlite Stereo Headset is designed with padded ear cups and a strong headband that disperses weight evenly. It comes with a reversible wired mic boom that protrudes without being cumbersome. It comes with a 90-day warranty.

Best Wheel: Wii Wheel

There aren’t a ton of racing games available for the Wii U so your options for steering wheels are basically nonexistent as far as a traditional wheel and pedal setup goes. All is not lost, however, as there is still a wheel option available in the form of steering wheel-shaped shells that utilize the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote Plus. You just snap a Wii Remote Plus into the wheel, and now your steering motions are accurately re-created in the game you’re playing. Because these are just simple plastic shells, you can safely buy cheaper third-party models instead of the official Nintendo unit and save some money. Obviously the experience isn’t going to be quite the same as playing with a real wheel and pedal set, but the motion controls work great in games like Mario Kart 8 and definitely makes the games more fun to play than on a standard controller, especially for kids.

Best Balance Board: Wii Fit U w/ Wii Balance Board

The best balance board you can buy for your Wii U is its first party dedicated Wii Balance Board with Wii Fit U. The innovative Wii U accessory allows for a whole new way to play games by encouraging players to get up and exercise.

The Wii Fit Balance Board comes with Wii Fit U – a game with 70 different activities you can do that utilizes the Wii Balance Board. The board calibrates to your weight and movements, and through a recorded user profile, accurately keeps track of every calorie you burn while playing games on it. It’s tough shell casing allows for users to personalize their own workout routines with activities such as yoga, strength exercises and dancing.

Best Hard Drive: MiniPro 2TB External USB 3.1 Portable Hard Drive

Boasting a massive 2.0 TB capacity, the MiniPro 2TB is a fully compatible American made portable hard drive for your Nintendo Wii U. Its USB 3.1 technology makes for the fastest speeds, so you can access a boatload of games and content immediately without any hiccups.

With a 2.0 TB capacity, the MiniPro is virtually capable of holding every single Nintendo NES and Super Nintendo game in existence. You’ll never have to worry about relying on the limited internal memory space issues with Wii U when you download games from Nintendo’s eShop. It isn’t cumbersome either, measuring at 7.8 x 6.3 x 1.8 inches. The MiniPro is backed by a three-year warranty, so you can rest assured if for any reason the hard drive crashes.

Runner-Up, Best Controller: Wii U Pro Controller

The Wii U Gamepad is great with games that actually utilize the built-in touch screen well, but not all games make smart use of it, and sometimes you just want to play with a more traditional controller, so in those cases the official Wii U Pro Controller is a must have. The Pro Controller gives you precision control in almost all Wii U games and Wii U versions of Virtual Console titles, and it has an absurdly long 80-hours of playtime on one full charge. The only negative is that it isn’t compatible with original Wii software (including Wii Virtual Console titles) on the Wii U, so you’ll still need Wii remotes and classic controllers to play Wii games. For Wii U games, however, you won’t find a better traditional controller than the Wii U Pro Controller.

Amazon. com Won’t Have Wii U For Pre-Order

The ongoing tiff between Nintendo and Amazon has reached escalation point as the popular online retailer says that it won’t have Nintendo’s latest console available for pre-order. Amazon apparently stopped selling the Nintendo 3DS a while back, and hasn’t ever stocked the Nintendo 3DS XL. Joystiq tried to reach out to both Amazon and Nintendo to find out what’s going on, but they have yet to receive a reply from either party.

Yet again only the consumer gets hurt…

The spAM IZ ON!

:D

Yes right again if companies dont suport there consumers then consumers just buy from a consumer frindley place best buy walmart game stop

GameStop? Consumer friendly? That’s a good one.

Cue angry people.

It’s weird because the other versions of Amazon don’t seem to be similarly afflicted. The UK site has them listed.

I’m guessing its a small feud between Nintendo and Amazon’s US company, or it’s one of the retailers that use Amazon.

I am assuming this is Amazon of America?

I’m guessing although is just check amazon us does have 3ds and 3dsXL listed with Free Super Shipping…

There are independent sellers that offer free shipping.

Thats gotta hurt sales. or maybe not as everywhere else is pre ordering anyway.

Game stop is not preorder and i also couldnt find anyone else who is. Since i can’t preorder it they will not get my money. i am not going to fight over finding a system close to christmas. what a joke. i wont by nintendo’s brand again.

The only people who loose out are Amazon. Idiots.

Amazon UK has it anyway, so it doesn’t apply to me.

Amazon going lose consumers

Dear Amazon. com Customer,

Thank for you signing up to be notified when the Wii U is available.

Unfortunately the Wii U console is not available at Amazon. com at this time but please check back in the future, as availability may change.

We do have the latest Wii U games and accessories available now so check them out.

Thank you for shopping with Amazon Video Games.

So if you’re interested in the Wii U, you’ll have to pre-order elsewhere – at least for now.

The wiiu is just not available YET on Amazon. will be in the near future some time….

A sad day for a lot of gamer’s for sure, especially with a massive F U message like that.

This is strange. Maybe Nintendo is sleeping with Amazon’s wife or something.

So nintendo dosent want some sorting robot, secret job steeler, econmy breaking, monygrubbling 3 man crew to sell thier items. at least nintendo will give gamestop/game people jobs still. screw amazon.

You don’t know much about the Amazon. com Inc., do you?

You do relise that since they are online only they dont deal with sales taxes? Their distribution is almost compleatly automated? Their workers do nothing but keep servers running and mechanics running at each distribution sight? Please I know enough not to tuch Amazon. they sell everything made and hurt every side of the industry minus food. amazon made borders close doors, they also helped close the doors to places like sunco, music center close down. Get out of your damn parents house every once in a while and realise people lost jobs cause of that fucking place.

1. They’re not online only.

2. Some states do require sales tax, even for Amazon. com

3. Distribution is not almost automated.

4. Amazon employs numerous people who do other things other than “do nothing but keep servers running.” Really… I don’t even think I have to explain..

5. You are very, very, very, ignorant and naive.

Yes i now that there 1% and we are 99% gamers

Amazon. ca also doesn’t have any problem with Nintendo. I don’t know what the US Amazon has against them, but I think it may be time for them to think about their own bottom line… unless they are planning on going to a streaming only service.

… I was just on amazon… I could buy a 3DS and a 3DSXL…

A person above answer that same question when i brought it up, they are independent seller that provide free shipping

No, it’s offered through amazon. com

I rechecked and It is not sold by Amazon. com. Through their website by independent sellers yes, for an exuberant price. If Amazon sells it themselves then they use the normal retail prices or sometimes less with free shipping.

Yes, this issue concerns NoA and US Amazon. BTW, yesterday afternoon I received the following:

“Dear Amazon. com Customer,

Thank for you signing up to be notified when the Wii U is available.

Unfortunately the Wii U console is not available at Amazon. com at this time but please check back in the future, as availability may change.

We do have the latest Wii U games and accessories available now so check them out.

Thank you for shopping with Amazon Video Games.”

Very strange. So far, in US, I know that both Best Buy and Game stop are receiving pre-orders.

I got that same email, too, and it sucks because I’m an Amazon Prime member who was hoping to get the Wii U with free shipping. Whatever, at least there’s a Gamestop within walking distance…

That’s it. The fact is that I usually prefer to purchase electronics at Amazon. com. Fair prices when compared to competitors (ok, it does not apply to WiiU since it has a fixed price, I know), good service, everything always well-packaged.

Another recent quite odd issue between NoA and local vendors was the one regarding Xenoblade: only Game Stop has it. o. O

“We won’t be selling the Wii U, but you can get Wii U games here. That’s good right?”

…I really don’t want to go to GameStop for the Wii U.

Try Toys r Us or Walmart. I think I’ll check there.

Looks like i have to scrape up 1800 dollars…

Amazon must be really stupid, the amount of hype created after yesterday is too large for a retailer to pass by, at least the other Amazon’s aren’t crybabies.

There are always valid reasons behind these decisions other than, “spite.”

The article says Amazon (of America, the other countries are unaffected it seems) isn’t selling 3DS XLs either. There’s obviously some sort of internal dispute between Amazon and Nintendo that we’re unaware of.

I heard that Amazon had tons of 3DS returns due to screen scratching issues and maybe other 3DS complaints. Maybe they took a big hit with the original 3DS and Nintendo didn’t make it right with Amazon.

Yesterday i was happy, now i am pissed off

Yeah, I kind of noticed. Even though they’re allowing pre-orders of the games, they aren’t doing the same for the console. I don’t have any idea why.

Likely some legal kinks.

Meh don’t care I don’t buy my stuff off the internet. I want it as soon as I can and that can only be done in store instead of waiting a few days or so after release.

Good thing about Amazon though, you can get a lot of stuff from day 1.

If the shipoing screws up you could be waiting weeks. I have walmart, bestbuy, futureshop, and EB games 10 min walk away from so I go there to get instantly. I was first to preorder my Wii U at my local eb games and I was the only one there too this morning.

I’ve been buying products from Amazon for years and if the listing specifically says ‘shipped and sold by Amazon’ there won’t be any issues.

Interesting… Amazon Germany / Austria doesn’t have those problems, i could preorder just fine.. altough they are missing details for the ZombiU Bundle…

Funny… Amazon Canada seem to have all Nintendo console available at the moment (3DS, 3DS XL and Wii). Amazon US must be kind of butt hurt or something. Or maybe MS and Sony gave big money to them to avoid selling Nintendo products. Wouldn’t be surprised.

Forgot to say that there aren’t any Wii U pre-order though.

Well good thing I preordered a Wii U at Gamestop, you only need to put down $25 and it can be easily refunded so my plan was to have a backup in case Amazon wasn’t preordering and it looks like I was right

This is a huge blow to a lot of folks… but I sort of saw it coming with the way Amazon handled the 3DS XL. Weird. Gamestop seems to be doing a lot of business in a very short time period. If you’re looking for a pre-order there I’d act fast.

That really sucks that you can’t preorder the Wii-U on Amazon. I preordered the Wii-U right a way after Nintendo Direct. I didn’t want to miss my chance on getting the Wii-U being sold out.

I’m no insider, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is because Amazon has sold a lot of NON Nintendo consoles that have Nintendo labels, and Nintendo has had to spend their own money to replace them. I have several friends both in the USA and in the UK who purchased their DS’s from amazon only to discover that they didn’t work at all. Nintendo was kind enough to replace the items.

I just screamed and threw my Oshawott plushie at my monitor.

Seriously, Amazon?!

You’re a business! Let me help you make money! There’s a reason why I’ve built up $400 in Amazon Gift Cards this past year through spending time on a bajillion sites!
