The first step towards ensuring a great experience for both buyer and seller is an honest appraisal of the new, used, refurbished or collectible items you list for sale on Amazon. co. uk Marketplace.

Unacceptable and Prohibited Items

Items in any of the following conditions are unacceptable for listing on Amazon. co. uk

Item does not work perfectly in every regard. Item is not clean, having signs of mould, heavy staining or corrosion. Item is damaged in a way that renders it difficult to use. Item is missing essential accompanying material or parts. (This does not necessarily include instructions.) Item requires repair or service. Item was not created by the original manufacturer or copyright holder. This includes copies, counterfeits, replicas and imitations. Item was originally distributed as a promotional copy, promotional bundle, product sample or advance reading copy. This includes uncorrected proofs of in-print or not-yet-published books. Any aspect of the item is obscured and not able to be read or viewed because of markings, stickers or other damage. Item has passed the expiry date (includes "best before" and "sell by" dates), has an unacceptable portion of its shelf life remaining or has had the expiry date removed or tampered with. Item is prohibited for sale on Amazon. co. uk.

Collectible books

Must be signed, a limited first edition, out of print, or have other desirable qualities that could reasonably be assumed to increase the book's value to a collector – you will have an opportunity to say why.

This could include:

The General Condition Guidelines do not apply to collectible books. Use the following condition types for Collectible Books:

Collectible - Like New: All pages and the cover are intact. The dust jacket is intact, if applicable, with no noticeable or very tiny nicks or flaws. Spine has no signs of creasing. Book may have very small but virtually unnoticeable flaws. Include condition details in the listing comments. Collectible - Very Good: Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Spine shows no sign of creasing. Dust jacket, if applicable, shows signs of some rubbing or chipping. Include condition details in the listing comments. Collectible - Good: All pages and the cover are intact, including the dust jacket, if applicable. Spine may show signs of wear. Generally, books in Good condition are not considered to be collectible grade. Collectible - Acceptable: A readable copy showing significant wear. Dust jacket may be missing. For all but the rarest items, books in Acceptable condition are not considered to be collectible grade.

New books

Brand-new, unused, unread and in perfect condition. The dust cover and original protective wrapping, if any, are intact. All supplementary materials are included and all access codes for electronic material, if applicable, are valid and/or in working condition. Books with markings of any kind on the cover or pages, books marked as "Bargain" or "Remainder," or with any other labels attached, may not be listed as "New" condition. It is strictly prohibited to describe a book as ‘New’ if it is used or second hand.

Used books

Like New: an apparently unread copy in perfect condition. Dust cover is intact with no nicks or tears. Spine has no signs of creasing. Pages are clean and not marred by notes or folds of any kind. Books may contain a remainder mark on an outside edge, but this should be noted in the listing comments. Any accompanying CDs or DVDs must be present and any access codes relating to the same, or to other content, must be present and unredeemed. Very Good: a copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Any accompanying CDs or DVDs must be present and any access codes relating to the same, or to other content, must be present and unredeemed. Good: a copy that has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact (including the dust cover, if applicable). The spine may show signs of wear. Pages can include limited notes and highlighting, and the copy can include "From the library of" labels. Books may have any accompanying access codes for additional or replacement content missing or redeemed. Acceptable: a readable copy. All pages and the cover are intact (the dust cover may be missing). Pages can include considerable notes – in pen or highlighter – but notes cannot obscure the text. What we will not accept for sale at Amazon. co. uk: mouldy, badly stained or unclean copies; copies which are unreadable or with missing pages or obscured text; promotional books, including advance reading copies. Uncorrected proof copies are prohibited.

Make sure you describe your books accurately. An accurate product description increases buyer satisfaction, helps sellers build a loyal customer base and ensures positive feedback ratings. Should a book have an obvious cosmetic flaw, sellers are strongly encouraged to make a note in the comments field. The presence of a remainder mark should always be noted in comments. Advance reading copies and uncorrected proofs are not permitted.

It is strictly prohibited to list ‘New’ condition books in any of the ‘Used’ categories.

Collectible music

Accurate descriptions of an Item’s condition is a valuable component of a buyer’s positive experience with Amazon. Sellers are advised to represent their wares carefully, taking assessment of each item before assigning it a given condition for sale. Sellers may offer products with different conditions to provide buyers with more purchasing choices. For example, a product page may offer items in both “new” and “used” condition. Different product categories require different condition listings, and some categories do not permit any condition other than “new.”

General Guidelines

Conditions are described here in detail to help sellers determine what term is most appropriate for each of the items they sell.

New: An unused, unopened item in its original packaging, including intact protective wrapping, if relevant. Warranty details should be in effect, and part of the product listing. Refurbished: An item that has been professionally restored to proper working order. Usually, the process involved repair, cleaning, and inspection that meet manufacturer’s specifications. Warranty from the manufacturer or the refurbisher should be in effect, and part of the product listing. Another term for this condition is “remanufactured.” This condition is not accepted for all product categories; sellers should check if it is applicable for their particular item. Used – Like New: An item that appears to have remained untouched, though protective wrapping may be missing. Item should have no signs of wear-and-tear, and should be in their intact original packaging. A rule of thumb is that this condition should be acceptable as a gift. Used – Very Good: An item that is in great condition, but shows signs of limited use. Item should have no markings or damage, and should work like new, but may have some faint signs of wear. Used – Good: An item that shows wear-and-tear, but works like new, and is in good condition. Item may have markings and other signs of regular use. This condition is not accepted for all product categories; sellers should check if it is applicable for their particular item. Used – Acceptable: An item that works perfectly, but shows significant signs of wear-and-tear. Item may have scratches, dents, or markings that indicate its previous use. This condition is not accepted for all product categories; sellers should check if it is applicable for their particular item.

Unacceptable Conditions

Items that are deficient in any of the following ways are not permitted for sale via Amazon:

Does not work perfectly. Is dirty or shows signs of staining, corrosion, or mold. Is damaged in a way that affects use. Is missing essential accompaniments (though missing instructions may be acceptable). Requires repair. Is a copy, imitation, replica, counterfeit (a. k.a., “knock-off”). Is promotional material or sample stock, including advance reading copies of not-yet published books. Is not fully viewable because of markings, damage, or the like. Is prohibited from selling via Amazon to begin with.

General condition guidelines





The following guidelines apply to all product categories unless otherwise indicated in the Category-Specific Condition Guidelines:





Just like it sounds. A brand-new item. Original manufacturer's warranty, if any, still applies, with warranty details included in the listing comments. Original packaging is present for most New items but certain items like shoes may be re-boxed.





A pre-owned product that was inspected and tested to work and look like new by an Amazon-qualified supplier (a seller or vendor) or by Amazon. The product has minimal to no signs of wear, no visible cosmetic imperfections when held 12 inches away, and may arrive in a brown or white box with relevant accessories that may be generic. The product comes with a warranty giving you a replacement or refund within 90 days of purchase if the product does not work as expected. A selection of products are eligible for the Amazon Renewed Guarantee. Any exceptions to this condition description will be mentioned on the product detail page.





Used - Like New or Open Box:





An item in perfect working condition. Original protective wrapping may be missing, but the original packaging is intact and in good condition with minor damage possible. Instructions are included.





Used - Very Good:





A well-cared-for item that has seen limited use and remains in good working condition. The item may show some limited signs of wear with small scratches or cosmetic blemishes. Item may arrive with damaged packaging or be repackaged and could be missing some accessories. Missing accessories are clearly defined for each item.





Used - Good:





Use only if noted in the Category-Specific Condition Guidelines. The item shows wear from consistent use, but it remains in good condition and works perfectly. It may be marked, have identifying markings on it, or show other signs of previous use.





Used - Acceptable:





The item is fairly worn but continues to function properly. Item may arrive with damaged packaging or be repackaged. Signs of wear can include aesthetic issues such as scratches, dents, and worn corners. The item may have identifying markings on it or show other signs of previous use. Item may be missing some parts or accessories such as screws (in the case of furniture) or a mouse or USB cable (in the case of a laptop).





Unacceptable and prohibited items





Items in any of the following conditions are unacceptable for listing on Amazon:


Item does not work perfectly in every regard. Item is not clean, including signs of mould, heavy staining, or corrosion. Item is damaged in a way that renders it difficult to use. Item is missing essential accompanying material or parts. (This does not necessarily include instructions.) Item requires repair or service. Item was not created by the original manufacturer or copyright holder. This includes copies, counterfeits, replicas, and imitations. Item was originally distributed as a promotional copy, promotional bundle, product sample, or advance reading copy. This includes uncorrected proofs of in-print or not-yet-published books. Any aspect of the item is obscured and not able to be read or viewed because of markings, stickers, or other damage. Item has passed the expiry date (includes "best by" and "sell by" dates), has an unacceptable portion of its shelf life remaining, or has had the expiry date removed or tampered with. Music – New and Used





Music formats include vinyl, magnetic tape, and disc.





If you are listing a club edition against the detail page for the standard edition, use the listing comments to indicate that your item is a club edition. CDs and cassettes must be sold with a protective jewel or cassette case. You may substitute newer packaging when a jewel or cassette case is damaged, but you may not substitute copied cover art or sleeve notes for the originals.
