International Standard Book Number (ISBN)
An ISBN is not required to publish an eBook with Kindle Direct Publishing. Once your content is published on KDP, Amazon will assign it a 10-digit ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number), which is unique to the eBook, and is an identification number for the Kindle Book on Amazon. com.
If you already have an ISBN for your eBook, you'll be able to enter it during the publishing process. Do not use an ISBN from a print version of your book; eBook ISBNs must be unique to eBook versions. You can purchase an ISBN from multiple sources on the Web, including the official ISBN body.
Paperbacks
An ISBN is assigned to every published book. An ISBN identifies a book's edition, publisher, and physical properties like trim size, page count, binding type. Every 10-digit ISBN has a 13-digit EAN with a different last digit (the check digit). The EAN will be listed on your cover's barcode.
Note: The ISBN in your paperback's files must match the book details entered during title setup.
Can KDP provide me with an ISBN?
KDP can provide you with a free ISBN to publish your paperback. We'll also automatically register your ISBN information with BooksInPrint. com®. This a global database of print books maintained by Bowker (the U. S. ISBN agency) and consulted by publishers, libraries, and booksellers. The "Publisher" field on your paperback's Amazon detail page will read "Independently published." This free ISBN can only be used on KDP for distribution to Amazon and its distributors. It cannot be used with another publisher or self-publishing service.
Can I provide my own ISBN?
You can buy your own ISBN from Bowker or through your local ISBN agency. ISBNs purchased from Bowker can be used to publish titles in any language. KDP authors can buy an ISBN at a discounted rate from Bowker. If you use your own ISBN, KDP will check whether your book's imprint matches what's on file with Bowker. You will not be able to publish your book if there is a mismatch. If you are reprinting your book, the title, author name, and binding type must stay the same. A new edition requires a new ISBN.

About Amazon
Founded in 1994, Amazon is the world’s biggest and most successful online retailer. Originally created to sell books over the internet, Amazon has gradually broadened their product range to include virtually everything that can be sent through the mail or internet, from DVDs and mp3s to electronics, toys, apparel, furniture and more. They also produce the world’s most popular electronic reader, the Kindle.
How to list products that do not have a Product ID (UPC, EAN, JAN or ISBN)
If your product does not have a product ID, also called a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), you might be eligible to request a GTIN exemption. First, check the Amazon catalog to see if your product already exists. If your product matches an existing product, you can add your offer on the existing product detail page without a GTIN. However, if your product does not match an existing product, you need to request a GTIN exemption and then add your product.
This page contains three sections that explain what you need to know Before you request a GTIN exemption, detailed steps on How to request a GTIN exemption, and information to help you Add your product after you receive a GTIN exemption.
Before you request a GTIN exemption
Please note that we have a list of Brands that require a GTIN to list on Amazon. GTIN exemptions are not available for these brands. Any product that belongs to any of these brands and does not have a GTIN will be suppressed.
Here are some scenarios when you can apply for a GTIN exemption:
- You want to sell products for which the brand, manufacturer, or publisher does not provide a GTIN. For example, private-label products or handmade products. You want to sell products for which you are the manufacturer, brand, or publisher and you do not have barcodes on your products. For example, private-label products or handmade products. You want to sell product parts that do not have a GTIN. For example, automotive parts or mobile accessories. You want to sell a bundled pack of more than one product. For example, a pack containing a leather belt and wallet or a pack of two shirts.
How to request a GTIN exemption
Before your apply, make sure you have one of the following:
- Product name and a minimum of two (and maximum of nine) images showing all sides of your product and the packaging of the product. Support letter from the brand owner, manufacturer, or publisher that is clear and readable (in English or the marketplace’s local language) containing the following information:
Name and contact information of the person who has written/issued the letter. This should be the brand owner or an authorized person. A statement that the brand does not provide a GTIN and the reason why. Your physical address, phone number, and email address or website address.
- Template letter to send to your brand owner or manufacturer Template letter to send to your publisher
Type the brand or publisher name in the Brand/Publisher field. For unbranded items and bundles, type Generic (case sensitive). Tip: you can apply for multiple exemptions (up to 10) by clicking + Add more brands/publishers to add brands or publishers under the same category and click + Add more categories to add new categories.
Click the Check for eligibility button. An Eligibility summary will appear. A check mark will appear in the Status column if you are eligible for an exemption. If your product is not eligible for a GTIN exemption, you will not be able to continue.
If your product is eligible for exemption, click the Continue to submit proof button.
On the Provide proof page, upload either your support letter or images:
- If you have a support letter from the brand/publisher/manufacturer, select Yes and upload the support letter in Word, PDF, or image format.
Click Submit request
You will receive an email within 48 hours regarding the approval status of your request. Alternatively, you can check the status of your request in your case log.
How to add a product after you receive a GTIN exemption
Once you have a GTIN exemption, wait 24 hours before adding your product.
After 24 hours, you can add your product in the same way you would with a GTIN. There is not a separate process for exempt products. Instead, the system will recognize you and your exemption approvals and allow you to proceed without a GTIN (Product ID). For this to work, be sure to enter the Category and Brand/Publisher name exactly as they appear in your exemption approval notice. If you use a different case or insert additional characters or spaces, the system will not recognize your exemption.
There are two ways to add your products in Seller Central:
Add a Product (one by one): For Individual and Professional sellers
See Add one product at a time for detailed instructions on how to use this tool. With your GTIN exemption, you do not need to enter anything in the Product ID and Product ID Type fields in the Vital Info section.
Add Products via Upload (bulk upload): For Professional sellers only
See Add your products using inventory files for detailed instructions on how to use this tool. With your GTIN exemption, you can leave the Product ID and Product ID Type columns blank in the template.
